Spotlight use to be king, now at the bottom Posted: 11 May 2021 10:31 AM PDT Disclaimer: This is a rant, move along if you love Spotlight, nothing to see here other than an old man shouting at clouds. I use to defend Spotlight against those who used Alfred. I use it to launch apps, find settings and calculate. With Big Sur, and maybe even Catalina, it has become unsusable. At first, I kept making excuses, like, maybe it just needs to finish indexing or something. However, after installing Alfred, I've completly moved away from Spotlight and will likley not use it until major fixes are made.
I know, there is a spotlight setting that you can use to turn off certain "searches". These are only for search results, there is no "App Store Suggestions" to turn off, very useless. Perhaps there is a way to manipulate this behaviour, I just remember Spotlight being THE ultimate tool for getting things done. It was FAST, easy, accurate and now seems like a bloated shadow of itself. I'll be enabling Alfred's file search to see how that goes. To be clear, I'm not pitting one software against the other. My whole point here is just for a baseline comparison, and contrasting how things use to/could be. I'd rather be using Spotlight if I'm going to be honest, is there a reason why things are this way now? [link] [comments]

Photos App - iCloud share/create link not available (MBA M1, if it matters) Posted: 12 May 2021 01:34 AM PDT So. I don't use an iPhone now, but a macbook. On the iPhone, there is an option in the photos app called 'create icloud link' or 'copy link'. It simple makes a link which is visible by anyone for the next one month. I can't find that option in the Photos app. Surprisingly, it's available on the webpage version i.e https://www.icloud.com/photos [link] [comments]
Help needed with macOS kernel panic errors Posted: 12 May 2021 12:24 AM PDT I've been having an issue with macOS for a while now where I get a "kernel panic" error when rebooting or shutting down. Sometimes (less often) it also happens that the computer starts lagging while working - during such behavior any changes made to the disk will not be preserved, and sooner or later the computer reboots itself throwing the same error. It seems to me that the problem appeared after updating to BigSur, but I'm not 100% sure if this was actually the case. Nevertheless, I have not observed such problems for years before. Full Apple error report in first comment. [link] [comments]

Comparison while upgrading my macbook Posted: 12 May 2021 12:13 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm contemplating buying a new mabook air to replace the one I currently have. Here are the specifics for my current Macbook air: MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) 2.2 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB 256GB SSD Now I'm planning on buying a refurbished macbook air because this exact model is absolutely perfect for me. I'm an engineering major and so will need at least 8gb ram and an i7. Also do note, that price is a big restrain for me which is why I'm going for this model. Additionally, I really can't go for the M1 model because then I won't be able to run programs on Windows, even if I use parallels due to the difference in architecture. 1.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz, with 8MB L3 cache 8GB of 3733MHz LPDDR4X onboard memory 512GB PCIe-based SSD1 One of the reasons I'm upgrading is the hardware on this laptop is kinda falling apart. It's not too terrible, but an upgrade won't really hurt. Do you all think the upgrade is worth it? This laptop is working fine, beginning to get slightly slow as compared to before when using adobe products specially... [link] [comments]

Preview in BigSur not saving properly. Did anyone encounter this as well? Posted: 11 May 2021 07:12 PM PDT Hello! I have some trouble with my Preview app. A few times already that it occurred, where I manually saved edits of my PDF (where i highlight some part of the PDF file), and when I close the window, and I open it some time later again, the edits that I did was gone. Any tips? Or anyone encountered the same problem? my laptop: Bought in Oct 2020, MacBook Pro Intel i5 chip. [link] [comments]

Big Sur Bluetooth Won't Connect Posted: 11 May 2021 06:16 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro 2018 with Big Sur 11.3.1 installed. I can't seem to get the bluetooth to work consistently. Every time I connect my JBL bluetooth speaker or my AirPods Pros, I have to connect and re-connect a bunch of times until it finally works (or until I give up). I have searched Reddit and google, and I have tried the following:
None of these options have helped me. I am wondering if this is just an issue that people are having until Apple fixes this?! Or should I reinstall Big Sur and start from scratch? Or is there a fix that I haven't found? Any help would be appreciated, I am so frustrated. [link] [comments]

Disabling system key binds when playing a full-screen game? Posted: 11 May 2021 04:59 PM PDT Hey guys, I'll get straight to the point: when running Dota (or any other fullscreen game) how do I disable commands like cmd Q... because I want to be using that shortcut to level up my first ability and instead it's closing the entire game. Is this possible, with or without a third party software? Thanks [link] [comments]

Stability & Performance: Big Sur vs Catalina vs Mojave? Posted: 11 May 2021 09:57 AM PDT My work system MBP15 is on Mojave and can be upgraded to Big Sur. I'm looking for feedback whether Big Sur is more stable than Mojave or whether Catalina is more stable? Do either Catalina or Big sur slow down the system ? Edit 1: I am a programmer, I work on webapps (PHPstorm), iOS apps and android apps. [link] [comments]

System Wide Loudness Equalization? Posted: 11 May 2021 11:59 AM PDT Hello, I searched far and wide for this question. But is there an app that can do what the windows 10 sound manager can do and normalize system wide loudness? I found older threads that are now locked suggesting either Audio HiJack or EqMAC, but looking through both apps it seems that they are both "equalizers" that adjust systemwide sound but not "capping" loud sounds or normalizes extremely loud or extremely quiet sound. If you have suggestions I'd be very appreciative. This is for the M1 macs btw. [link] [comments]
Will Apple come out with drivers for M1 Big Sur to support USB Ethernet devices? Posted: 11 May 2021 08:11 AM PDT Just got an M1 MBA. Love it so far. But I noticed something odd when I used my new USB-C hub for the first time. It has a built-in Ethernet port, but my Mac wouldn't recognize it when I plugged in the cable. I also tried using a USB-A Ethernet adapter plugged in to the hub to no avail. After looking at System Profiler it seems that the computer recognizes both the USB adapter and the built-in adapter but I don't have an option to add either as a network connection. I did some research and it appears that both devices use a Realtek chipset, and unfortunately their website only has drivers supported up to macOS 10.15, Intel only. Has anyone found a workaround for this? Or, any idea if Apple will update Big Sur to support these devices? [link] [comments] |
