What MacBook Air do I buy

    Posted: 18 May 2021 03:27 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a new MacBook Air but I can't quite decide which to get. I'm set on 512 gb storage and leaning on 16gb ram but I'm not sure on the details. What's the real difference between the 7 and 8 core gpu options and is Final Cut Pro actually worth the $200 bundle? I'll probably do some light video editing and some stop motion along with super basic games but it's mostly for school. I just don't wanna overpay or end up falling short and I've never bought a MacBook before.

MacBook boots with a file logo with question mark?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 11:08 AM PDT

Hi, my MacBook Air of 2015 that I tried to reinitialise to sell it without any of my files just shows the logo of a folder with a question mark. The logo just blinks.

A few months ago I tried to format everything to sell it afterwards.

I don't exactly remember what happened when I tried to reboot it but I remember that when I wanted to sell it I got stuck after the formatting.

I also changed my mind, I will keep the MacBook to connect it to my Samsung 40 inch television that we just acquired. Since the TV is not the latest generation it doesn't have smart Tv so I will connect the MacBook and use it as a video streaming console.

But how to get out of that situation where I have only a folder with question by mark when I put the MacBook on??

macbook pro keyboard backlight partially dimmed - should i be worried about further damage?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 04:58 PM PDT

i dont know exactly what triggered it but im guessing its water damage from a spill about 2 weeks ago. the middle part of the backlight (from key numbers 5 - 9 for 3 rows down) is dimmed compared to the rest of the backlight.

this doesnt bother me that much but what im more concerned about is if this is any indication that ive damaged the actual computer more (e.g. the keyboard will randomly stop working?). the keyboard had weird inputs once randomly but everything went back to normal after restarting.

and is there any steps i can take to reduce risk? and also are those silicone keyboard covers a good idea?

    thanks

    Posted: 18 May 2021 03:42 PM PDT

I purchased a second hand MBA 2015 with 8gb RAM two years ago and so far its been great, but more recently at random times the screen just goes black and I generally have to restart it... but im wondering if the upgrade is worth it? will it see a difference?

    Macbook Pro volume booster?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 02:34 PM PDT

Kinda self-explanatory, but I would love a suggestion for a volume booster. I had one for my 2011 macbook pro, and recently switched to a M1 Pro. I can't hear this thing at all.

    Thanks!

Old MacBook Air reset but super slow??

    Posted: 18 May 2021 02:01 PM PDT

Hi, I reformatted an old MacBook Air from 2015, the formatting and especially the installation of a clean new Mac OS was extremely laggy, buggy and slow.

I thought the MacBook Air (2015, 4gb ram , 128 Gb ssd drive) would have a normal speed with a freshly formatted hard drive and new Mac OS but no, I can't even click to open apps.

I am not planning to use it as a primary computer but only connect it to my television to stream video of YouTube or some movies on the HDD.

How do I make it at least able to do that??

Do apple support personal need my apple id and password to wipe my mac book pro?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 01:58 PM PDT

My mac book pro is having trouble booting up (15inch 2018 mac book pro). Apple claims it's water damage. A third party I am talking to says they need to wipe my computer but they need my apple id and password.

Is that legit? I never trust anyone who says I have to give personal information so I figured this warranted a check.

Windows 10 performance on, Apple M1 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 01:39 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I'm thinking about downloading Windows 10 onto my MacBook Pro,(via Bootcamp) I just need it for Excel and some other small applications for ease of use, I'm not trying to game or anything crazy.

Has anyone tried it on the M1 Chip Macbook? I'm just curious to see how your experience was, such as how good, bad, or normal it was.

Monitor regularly losing input from display port. 2020 M1 MBP

    Posted: 18 May 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Alright so I use a cal digit dock and a display port cable for my monitor. I've been having an issue like once every 1-2 days I'll come home from work and my monitor will be in a shut off & back on loop. My monitor will say no input detected, after 5 seconds turn off, realize there is a DP cable plugged in and beep real loud then auto turn back on. It then repeats this cycle non stop. However as soon as I unplug the DP from the back of my monitor and plug it back in, it seems to return to working normally.

Is this a hardware issue with the PC or doc? Is it an issue with the cable type or quality? Or is it something completely else?

I've been considering finally making the switch to Apple and getting an M1 Pro for my work. But the biggest thing putting me off is the lack of options for virtualization and vm software use. Should I stick with Windows or make the switch?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 08:55 AM PDT

So I'm part of my company's Networking team, mainly responsible for both upkeep of our internal network hardware and software and also programming of our hardware for our customers that buy our products. I also go out to sites and sometimes have to do installation. Now, I have been doing this job for three years and primarily use a Thinkpad but it is on life support at this point. A great work horse that allows me to use multiple vm's via Virtual Box or VMWare and not slow down my system much, but it dies within an hour or so. I'm sad to see the little guy go.

But, in the past, I've used a MacBook Pro that had Windows dual booted via Boot Camp, or I've run Linux vm's on the MacOS desktop via Virtual Box just fine. The Pro I originally got in I think 2014 was also a great work horse. No problems at all except the time I dropped it and broke the screen. Oh well.

I played around with my friend's M1 Pro and again, I love the look and feel of the Mac OS system. It's awesome. But, as I found out later, there is currently no option for Boot Camp or even compatibility with programs like Virtual Box because of the ARM architecture. Needless to say, I really want this laptop, but I'm wondering how long it will take to get it where I need it to be. Or if I should even just get an Intel-based one.

Sorry if this went on longer than expected.

Should I trade in M1 MacBook Air (8GB, 512SSD) for base model M1: Did I get too much computer?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 04:22 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

    Still within my return window.

Traded in a 2015 MacBook Air for a 2020 M1 MacBook Air. I got extra storage, but I'm worried I really don't need stand would be better served by trading for a base model M1 Air. I mostly write and do very little editing or rendering.

I can certainly use the space, but it seems like a bad use of my more limited funds.

Using M1 macbook pro vs. 16in i9 pro for work

    Posted: 18 May 2021 09:30 AM PDT

I'm having trouble deciding on what will be better to use for work. They've sent an i9 16inch which is nice, but much bigger than what I am used to (I've used a 13in pro my whole life, and throughout college).

My understanding is that both can go to 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage.

The only thing I am seeing is the M1's issues with multiple displays. Desktop app compatibility is not an issue. If I have the option, do you think I should go for the 13 inch M1? I kinda wanted to try an M1 too...

Third party Hub / adapter about Macbook with m1 chip

    Posted: 18 May 2021 08:38 AM PDT

My question is, could any hub/adapter/docking station with usb-c be not compatible and suitable for Macbooks with m1 chip?

I was browsing earlier to get one, and in the description of one of them it said "Not suitable for Macbooks with thr new m1 chip".

I found it weird, but I decided to ask, do you have any idea why that could be? What should I be looking at ot avoiding in this case?

Also, if somebody with a Macbook with m1 chip is already using a third party hub / adapter, could you give me feedback or tecommendations about your brand or model? Preferrably with a slot for card.
