    Unauthorized app download?

    I have never had/wanted a Snapchat account. This morning I looked at my phone and the Snapchat app had spontaneously downloaded itself to my phone. No one else has access to my iCloud account and I absolutely did not download it myself. Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? Could I have unknowingly downloaded it by clicking an ad or something? It's really bothering me that this happened…

    Running diagnostics on Mac won't work

    I am trying to run diagnostics on my Mac and it is so silly it's laughable. I shut down my laptop, pressed power and then held d. I was brought to a screen asking me to choose a network; I choose my network, enter my password and I'm back at the choose my network screen. Password is 100% correct btw.

    The volume on my automations is so low

    I use an automation to speak things. For example when I plug in my phone i have an automation for it to speak the battery level. It use to be an audible volume level and recently when the automation runs, it'll say the battery level so incredibly low it's very hard to hear. Any way to change the automation speaking volume or fix this?

    Want to buy a server -- what's my best config?

    I currently use an old iMac 5k 27" for everything that I do. The display is fantastic, but the machine is getting a bit slow for my needs (video processing, data science, software compiling, etc) Occasionally at 100% utilization, the lag is bad enough that my cursor overshoots the next spot I am to point it at.

    What I'd like to buy is something like a Mac Mini to run silently in the background, handling a bunch of the crontab and housekeeping / long-renders that I do on my main computer. For <$1k, it looks like a good deal, other than I'm not sure how easily I can work from it without a monitor. Assuming I want something that runs at 100% CPU most of the time, and I'll interact with it ~once a week, is it worth buying a dedicated monitor or does Remove Desktop / Screen Sharing suffice? I am slightly concerned that running ML models and managing Python dependencies will be a constant battle on these newer chips.

    Alternatively, I'm thinking about upgrading my iMac to a Mac Pro rig with an XDR monitor (This current iMac is the only non-Pro mac I've purchased in 20 years), though I've got the same problems -- Can I get some sort of monitor switch to select between the Mac Pro and the Mini? I would hate to have to unplug the monitor to keep switching inputs.

    The third option is to build a PC, tailored toward being a rendering beast, opening up the door for legit ML models, virtual reality, and the like. But, I hate the OS, and it actually ends up being fairly expensive on the high end, and not very exciting on the average end.

    A fourth option is getting most of this infrastructure setup to run on headless cloud servers, but it puts a cramp in my workflow having it so remote and billed by the hour.

    What would you guys recommend?

    Unrecognized Music in Recently Played tab

    Hi y'all, I use Apple Music a bunch, and sometimes would search for a station to listen to some random music. But recently after looking in the Recently Played section in the Listen Now tab, I found two albums which I don't remember listening to.

    They was a comedy and some music album by someone who I don't know. When I use stations, it lists the station I listened to in Recently Played, but not the entire album of a single song I listened to.

    I know for sure my account has not gotten hacked, because I made a new Apple ID back in March and always had a secure and long password with 2FA on. I haven't gotten any unrecognized login emails nor login prompts on any of my devices. I also changed my password and logged out on all my devices yesterday night as well.

    I'm in a Family Sharing group, if that has anything to do with this bug. This has even happened with my old Apple ID back earlier this year, except there was music in my library that I didn't add.

    Does anyone else have this same bug and if you do, do you know why it's happening? Thank you.

    Setting up multiple users on the new iMac, apps only run from one user.

    Hi all. This has me totally stumped and I don't know what else to try.

    I'll buy reddit gold to whoever figures this out first.

    Background: First off, we got the new iMac in today. Beautiful computer. We're starting from scratch (no backups loaded) and for the first time we're trying multiple users.

    The problem: Let's say I download Minecraft on the main admin we setup the computer with (User1). It runs just fine for User1. If you switch users however, even to another admin account (User2), the app does not run. While on User2, I decide to download it again but it won't install. You get an error about writing permissions but I have a feeling this might be a canned response from the developer.

    Troubleshooting: So I decide to try installing another app, in this case Roblox, on User2. It installs and runs just fine. I switch back to User1 to run it and sure enough, the same error. This is what makes me think the permissions error is a canned response. I try to install Roblox on User1 and that fails too.

    How do I get around this? Ideally we'd be installing apps once for all users but I honestly wouldn't mind installing it for every user on the computer. Whatever allows them to run for everybody.

    Hello, The number keypads (from 1 to 9) and the upper letter keypads ( from Q to O ) of my Mac are not working. As now I have shut down the Mac and when I try to log in to my Mac it needs password. But my password contain some numbers. So I cannot enter to my Mac. Is there any way to solve this problem? Please help me!

    something weird writing over my hard drive space

    I'm not sure how to identify this but I cleaned up some space on my hard drive, but not to long after my drive space was full again. Looking at storage and there's a massive 'other' on my hard disk. So I wiped the drive and updated Mac OS, theirs just the base set of programs but in storage I can see 'other' crawling along taking up my disk space again. I'm not sure but these are the two things i think it could be

    -I have filevault on,

    -On disk utility: I show 2 drives, my main drive showing my computer name and a second drive with 'Name - Data', which is the older name my computer went by.

    I've updated my computer several times from Big Sur to now a beta but i've run out of ideas, any thoughts?

    I have noticed it since I got the phone in January, but thought nothing of it. When watching youtube, the black border of the video or any display that is supposed to be pitch black will flicker. Any idea what is happening and/or how to fix it?

    Unrecognized Apple ID sign in attempt

    I just received a popup notification asking me to verify an iCloud sign in attempt from Bangkok (I am in US). From my experience, this two factor authentication doesn't trigger until the correct password is entered. I've changed my password, but is my phone or iCloud or any other service tied to my Apple ID still exposed in other ways? Is there any way that they could have accessed anything even though I denied the sign in attempt?

    Administrator Accounts on Filevault-encrypted drive

    I have to take my laptop in for a battery swap, and I know one of the things they'll ask me to do is to turn off Find My and also to give them my account password. The latter I am uncomfortable doing for obvious reasons.

    If I create a second administrator account on my computer for the Apple tech, will that account be able to access my files? I realize that the "safest" option is to do a Time Machine backup and then wipe the drive before taking it into Apple, but restoring via Time Machine will take hours and it's not always the most reliable...a family member had 30 GB worth of photos simply vanish when they transitioned to a new computer.

    Thoughts?

    Can I recover my data from my iPhone that I bricked?

    Before we start, yes, I know I'm stupid. I fucked up, I did a stupid thing, but I need you guys to be nice to me right now because I'm having a really bad time and I feel stupid.

    I accidentally microwaved my phone, around 2-3 seconds, I know that there's no way I can get it working again but any way I can recover the data?

    Screen Time on iPad

    Facebook and Whatsapp are showing up on my iPad's screen time even though I don't have those apps installed on it, I noticed it shows up on the iPad's screen time every time I use those apps on my iPhone, i used Whatsapp and Facebook for example but it happens for almost every app, is this normal for you guys, has screen time show up your iPhone's apps screen time on your iPad?

    iPhone 12 PM CONSTANTLY disconnects from data. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve had my iPhone replaced 3 times, SIM card replaced 2 times and I’ve switched carriers. What am I doing wrong?

    So when i updated to iOS 15, my battery has been really trash lately. it could be because when i updated, it was recalibrating my battery and said "unexpected life expectancy may go down fast" but its super super bad. when i restarted my phone, it was at 50% when i turned it back on but before it was somewhere between 45-50 but most likely lower. when i started i was at 50% (obv) but now currently im at 44. is this normal for the recalibrating or is it something more serious? Thanks!

    Mac accent menu not working

    Title pretty much says it. Long-pressing a letter key to get the pop-up accent menu just stopped working. Instead of the menu, I get aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... you get the idea.

    Didn't do anything (intentionally) to make this change, but maybe there's an easy fix?

    FWIW, I'm using an Air (2015) running Big Sur 11.2.3.

    Transferring Files from dead IPad to new one

    Hello all.

    My girlfriend has an IPad 6 and I accidentally dropped it when it fell out of her bag I was carrying. It won't turn on anymore and the camera portion is still exposed. It landed on a corner on a step of course.

    We're trying to get a new ipad, but she used hers for work a lot and we're wondering what options we have for transferring her Procreate files to her new one. Since that's her business.

    Any help would be absolutely wonderful!

    Weird question about updating to Big Sur

    I'd like to update OS on my old-ish macbook to use current programmes

    On this macbook the internal hard-drive stores 120gb, and right now 76gb of that is taken up by 'System', which I assume is my current OS.

    Pictures for reference

    Big Sur seems to be around 41gb.

    Does that mean after I have installed it, it will my system take up 117gb of my storage? Or does it compound in some way?

    iPhone disabled not able to fix it.

    Hello, my boyfriend and I are on vacation in Mexico and we are locked out of his iPhone which he needs for remote work, as well as travel tickets etc. to get back home.

    His phone says "iPhone disabled" please connect to iTunes. We have WiFi, a laptop, and his iPad, but we have tried everything and are not able to unlock it still. We have been trying for days to follow the steps of iPhone recovery but the download speed is so slow here that it fails before the recovery can be completed. We have tried everything.

    We are willing to factory reset the phone in any way possible because he has it backed up, but we haven't been able to figure out how. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    I also can't contact apple support from out of country so I'm not even able to call or text support.

    Best Macbook pro for final cut pro, music production, and iOS app development?

    My budget I'd say is 3k maximum - been saving up a lot so I'm willing to pay up to that much for a new laptop.

    A little background:

    I'm a software developer and I'd wanna use this macbook for some personal projects, including learning and using Xcode to make iOS apps. I also wanna edit videos just for fun, maybe start a youtube channel as a hobby or edit my friend's youtube vids. Lastly, I want to make some music - plan to start with garageband and move from there.

    Honestly I don't know much about the specs and all that (hardware has never been my interest). Is this laptop a good buy? Any specs I should tweak, or should I go for something cheaper?
