| Should I upgrade to Big Sur (from High Sierra) Posted: 09 Apr 2021 10:52 PM PDT I have a 2015 15inch macbook pro. I'm a digital artist and animator so I require a lot from it but it's held up the last 6 years. However it's getting now to a point where it's not slow but it gets hot when I open any app. I figure it's just getting tired. My sister tried to combat this same problem on her laptop by upgrading and now it's really slow and laggy, which doesn't work for me since I need a lot of responsiveness with my drawing tablet. I would just leave it at High Sierra honestly but I want to back my phone up to it and the people at Apple as well as most third party advice says the only way to get around the alert that says my computer can't read my phone without snd update is to update. | This is driving me mad: Control+Command+mouse/trackpad moves the window Posted: 10 Apr 2021 12:22 AM PDT Hello guys, This is driving me mad for a couple of days and I cannot figure out where this shortcut/binding is coming from to turn it off. The window can be grabbed with this shortcut from any place within the window. I need Control+Command to be available in emacs, I need it as such.... This only happens on my work Mac, on the personal one is not there. I have went through all the shortcuts in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts and I have nothing there to explain this. Searching online I have found that easy-move-resize has this binding by default. https://github.com/dmarcotte/easy-move-resize I might have had it installed at some point as I constantly try to find better/faster/easier ways to do things, so I have tried installing it, and modify it's shortcut to different than cmd+ctrl+mouse/trackpad, but it never kicks in, it seems that something is overriding this shortcut completely. The shortcut happens when easy-move-resize is not running. Either way I invoke it cmd+ctrl or ctrl+cmd, the result is the same. I have tried ShortcutDetective to see where is coming from, but it yields nothing... Anyone else has faced this problems? Thanks in advance for any tips. | Parallels and Mac M1? Posted: 09 Apr 2021 06:18 PM PDT I am being sent a laptop from my workplace and it's running windows. As I wait for it, I'm using my MacBook Air m1 and my iPad as a second monitor. It's a perfect set-up. Unfortunately, I am only able to do 1/3 of my job right now, as all the software I need for work is on the PC and is not Mac compatible. I thought the solution would be to download parallels and do a transfer. This way, I don't have to purchase an extra monitor, a compatible keyboard, make space for all of it, plug several things into an area that's not very outlet friendly, don't have to worry about all of my passwords I have currently saved in icloud etc etc etc. But I'm starting to read up on it, and it seems maybe this is not going to work with my Mac. Is there truly zero chance of this working? If I ran the program in Rosetta 2 (it sounds like i know what I'm talking about here, but just barely) would that help? | Mac mini 2012 Wide Monitor Problem Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:41 PM PDT  | I've got a 2012 2,3 GHz i7 Mac Mini, running Catalina 10.15.7 connected to an LG 29UM68-P (29" 21:9 monitor) with a thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort cable with 2560x1080 resolution. I've been using the DP because with the HDMI I can only go to 1920x1080. I've been using it for months and the only problem was when I turned on the Mac, or it woke from sleep, the screen made a brief glitch. Today the DP stopped working, when I connected, the monitor says "NO SIGNAL". It works fine with the HDMI cable but only in 1920x1080. Here is the clinker, I connected with Screen Sharing from the MacBook and changed the resolution to 1080p and it works with the DP cable but only in 1920x1080, so it's not the port or the cable (it's a $10 cable) I already restarted the PRAM and SMC. Any suggestions? | problems with safari and music after MacOS downgrade Posted: 10 Apr 2021 01:50 AM PDT Hi, I most recently decided to no longer participate in the MacOS beta program. After cancelling the program and reinstalling the newest MacOS version via the AppStore some programs do not work anymore, these include safari and music. The problem is that the new installed older MacOS version does not support them yet. Does anybody know what to do about this? | Amphetamine Crashing All of a Sudden with Posted: 09 Apr 2021 01:02 PM PDT  | I use amphetamine to have clamshell mode without a power adapter plugged in. I do this because I have external monitors and keyboard/mouse hooked up to my laptop and I dont want to fry the battery by leaving it on 100%. I have been doing this for around 5 months now, but I recently updated amphetamine and the "don't allow system sleep with closed-display" mode is no longer working for me. The computer goes to sleep when I unplug the power, and it displays the message shown in the picture, once I plug it back in. It happens like 10/20 times in a day and I can absolutely not find what's causing this. I tried to read the crash logs, but I didn't learn anything from it. I was also charging the device. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse via bluetooth. | How can I tell MacOS Catalina to use a specific USB port for audio output? Posted: 09 Apr 2021 10:21 AM PDT Trying to hook up my old speaker to my mac as follows: - Speaker connected with 3.5mm cable to USB-C adapter.
- USB-C adapter plugged into external monitor (LG 24MD4KL-B) which acts as a USB hub.
- External monitor connected to MacBook with single Thunderbolt cable.
This setup does not work, MacOS does not recognize the speaker (which I didn't expect). How can I tell MacOS to use a specific USB port for audio output? Update: When I check System Report > Hardware > USB I see the USB tree and can successfully find a USB port called "Headphone adapter". | Had to wipe and start clean with old MacBook - Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion - can't upgrade Posted: 09 Apr 2021 12:41 PM PDT I had a problem with the SSD on my 2012 MacBook Pro, and had to wipe it and reinstall the system. The clean reinstall reverted to 10.8 Moutain Lion, and the problem now is that I can't seem to upgrade to a new OS. I couldn't find it anywhere from Apple. So I tried to download 10.9 Mavericks from an unofficial source, and started the installer. However, when I'm at the step where I choose which disk to install it on and click "Install", nothing happens. The button is a right arrow, and it reacts when I hover or click it, but nothing happens. I tried to search the web for solution, but the closest I got was someone saying you have to hand your Mac in to an authorized repair shop so that they can install the necessary upgrades?! Is that really how it works? Those who have to wipe their old Macs and started clean have to pay money to have the OS upgraded from whatever it came with when it was new? Or is there some other solution here I'm missing? Edit: The "macOS" logo used here on this subreddit shows up under software updates in the App Store app. I installed all the updates available there, but iTunes failed, and it doesn't give me any options to upgrade the OS despite the "macOS" icon next to the iTunes update. Edit 2: Looks like the downloaded Mavericks might have been corrupted (can't create bootable USB using DiskMaker X, as it says it isn't a proper installer - could have to do with file permissions?).
