3 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 82)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 04:49 AM PDT

Finally Friday! Welcome back to episode 82 of my mobile gaming recommendations based on the most interesting games I played last week :) Hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes Supercell's brand new strategy game, an awesome new multiplayer PvP fighting game, and a fun arcade bullet-hell shooter.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 82 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Smash Legends [Game Size: 771 MB] (free)

    Genre: Brawler / Fighting / PvP / 3D / Smash Bros.-like - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Smash Legends is a fun and high-quality real-time multiplayer 3D brawler somewhat reminiscent of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros.

The game features five game-modes, including 3v3 domination team-deathmatches, normal team-deathmatches, an 8-player battle royale, 4-player free-for-all, and 1v1 PvP duels. The normal domination matches have us compete against another team over the control of a central location on the map, using abilities and normal attacks to either deal enough damage to kill the other players, or knock them over the edge of the map. It's hectic and arguably also the most fun game-mode.

There's a total of nine heroes to unlock, each of which has unique stats and abilities. Since these heroes differ vastly, team composition plays a somewhat important role in the team game-modes, which makes Smash Legends a great game to play with friends. As we level up our heroes, their strength increases, and they unlock new powerful abilities.

We progress by playing matches to earn keys that unlock a loot box every time we have accumulated 100 keys – much like in Supercell's Brawl Stars. In addition, we earn medals and can complete battle pass missions for extra rewards. There's currently no paid version of the battle pass, which is great for the fairness of the game.

The art-style and animations look fantastic and the abilities have some real punch, making the core gameplay a very satisfying experience.

Smash Legends monetizes through iAPs for a premium currency used to buy more in-game gold and loot boxes with hero cards. The monetization provides a pay-to-progress-faster advantage, but the game can easily be enjoyed as a free player.

AirAttack 2 [Total Game Size: 348 MB] (Paid: $0.99)

Genre: Bullet Hell / Arcade - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape + Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

AirAttack 2 is a fun WW2-themed arcade bullet-hell shooter featuring 22 campaign levels, daily events, and survival missions that we complete using 5 upgradeable airplanes with unique weapons.

One of the best aspects of the game is that every level is fully destructible, including all buildings and ground units. In fact, more often than not, the boss fight at the end of a mission is a ground target or building that we use bombs to destroy while fending off in-air enemies becomes a secondary objective. This creates a fun and unique gameplay experience. While the levels are decently easy to finish, achieving all three objectives of each level is incredibly challenging.

The timeless retro-styled graphics look great, and the awesome explosions and effects really pop on the screen. The game can also be played offline, in both landscape and portrait-mode, and even features controller support.

AirAttack 2 is a $0.99 premium game on iOS. On Android, it monetizes through incentivized and forced ads, with a single $1.99 iAP that removes all ads and doubles the mission rewards.

It's an easy recommendation for any fan of arcade bullet-hell shooters, and one of the best within the genre on mobile.

Clash Quest [Game Size: 149 MB] (free)

Genre: Strategy / Turn-based / Puzzle - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

tl;dr review: [EARLY ACCESS / BETA]

Clash Quest is a fun new single-player turn-based strategy game set in Supercell's Clash universe. It is currently in early access in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland.

The core gameplay has us complete campaign levels that consist of three waves of enemies. These enemies appear on a 4x4 grid at the top of the screen, while our heroes take up the bottom 4x4 grid. To attack, we simply tap the hero we want to use, and if more of the same hero connect on our grid, they'll all attack at the same time – a bit like in a Match-3 game. For as long as we still have heroes left, new heroes instantly replace those that attacked to fill up the grid again.

Since each hero has unique stats and predictable attack patterns, we can be strategic about when to use which heroes. At the same time, however, new heroes appear in random order on our grid, which gives the game more of a casual feel. Further into the game, we unlock a league game-mode where we compete against other players to get as far as possible into an endless level.

Winning a level instantly rewards us with gold and hero cards used to level up our heroes. Unfortunately, entering a level costs one of 12 energy points, which each take an entire hour to replenish. This means our play-session length is limited to around 15 minutes at a time.

Clash Quest monetizes through iAPs for a premium currency used to buy more gold and hero cards, which allows paying players to progress faster and avoid potential grindwalls. The game is decently fun, and if paywalls aren't introduced down the line, it will work well as a polished casual strategy game for fans of the Clash universe.

Northgard is with absolutely zero doubt the best mobile game I’ve played ever. Maybe.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 12:07 PM PDT

As good or better then any premium game or Apple Arcade game that I've played since Snake on Nokia. Tutorial, interface, graphics, control, gameplay, audio, etc. I could shill for days with quality like this. They nailed everything at a low price for the value.

This game has got praise in a few recent posts so I tried it out today. For some reason the videos just didn't convince me it was worth the price. The hype on this sub sold me though. Thanks.

Apparently Apple are updating apps to use a signing certificate? Anyone else seeing this? Never seen it before.

Hey, iOS Gamers! What is your current gaming setup

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:28 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I am currently traveling a lot and don't have much time to do any gaming so i use my iPad 6th gen (2018) to play whatever i like on the Apple Store (non-arcade).

And was wondering what is everyone else using.

I am planning to change to the new iPad pro when it releases (probably the smaller screen from the two) and then a controller but i am not sure if i want a SteelSeries Nimbus or a PS4/5 controller. And eventually buying a Apple Arcade sub.
