Why Does YouTube on Apple TV 4K Still Suck So Bad?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:50 PM PDT

So here I am watching videos from Apple's YouTube channel and I can't believe how terrible the video quality is on my Apple TV 4K and Vizio M-Series 4K TV. I played the same video on Safari on my MacBook and captured screenshots of approximately the same frame on both devices.

Apple's YouTube channel content maxes out at 1080P, which though irritating, I can live with. What I can't live with is the horrendous banding, presumably due to the YouTube app's lack of support for wide color gamut / high dynamic range on the Apple TV.

Am I the only one infuriated by this? Is this still about the two companies' pissing contest over H.265 vs VP9?

Need apple tv review for my use cases

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 01:35 AM PDT

So I've never use Apple TV but heard a lot about it and I'm considering buying it if it satisfies following uses that I have:

    1. I often download tv shows on my phone which i airdrop to my iPad and connect it to my tv to watch it. Does Apple TV have this airdrop capability?

    2. Does VLC player or a similarly capable video player available on Apple TV that I can use to play downloaded videos?

    3. Is there a browser and files app available so I can directly download the videos on the TV?

    4. I don't have fitness+ and tv+ available in my region, is it possible install expressVPN on apple tv and use those apps somehow?

    5. If 4th point is not doable, is it worth getting Apple TV?

    6. Also is it possible to connect an external hard drive and play videos or music from that?

    Thanks

What is specifically happening that allows the iPhone to calibrate the color of your TV via Apple TV?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:19 PM PDT

UI annoyance that has always bugged me with Apple TV.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 10:40 PM PDT

The tab UI is a pain to use because you have to scroll all the way back to the top in order to slide left and right between tabs.

In the TV app, you have tabs across the top for Watch Now, tv+, Movies, and so on to get to different sections of the app. I've always found the general user interaction method doesn't fit because unlike an iOS device where you can touch anywhere on the screen and unlike a mouse that can click anywhere, the Apple TV remote only allows you to swipe up/down/left/right. That means that you move around within the tab, but to alternate between tabs, you have to go all the way back up to the top, which requires you to scroll back up, either by swiping back up, or by pressing Menu to jump back up.

    It just feels clunky.

The same is true of apps like YouTube or Netflix, which essentially have the same system, but instead of tabs at the top, you have a sidebar on the left and you have to scroll all the way back to the left to move up and down between these sidebar options.

Again, it's clunky and doesn't work well with a swipe-based Siri Remote.

Seeing the Siri Remote 2.0 made me come to a realization. What if the new 'iPod wheel' could be used for this? When you're watching something, it's used as the new scrubber to easily move forward/back. That sounds like a huge improvement over the current remote's 'edge clicks'. But what if this wheel could also back used for tabs/sidebars? You'd swipe the pad or click the up/down/left/right arrows to move around normally, but then you'd have that outer ring that you could move around and it would automatically move left/right between tabs (ie. in the TV app) or up/down along the sidebar (ie. in YouTube/Netflix).

As far as I know, it doesn't do this. But I'd love to see that implemented. I think that would be a significant improvement to the interface.

Plainly speaking, the issue is that most apps have two 'levels' of interface - the section of the app you want to be in and the selection within that section. Right now, there's only one UI input method. Adding a second method would allow for each method to apply to an interface 'level' and thus make the whole process smoother. Swipes or clicks to move around within the section, and the wheel to move between sections.

Can you access Apple subscriptions off of Android?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:46 PM PDT

My wife and I subscribed to Discovery+ through our AppleTV. I want to watch on my phone, but it's an Android. Am I able to access the app through our account or am I not able to because I can't "restore purchase "

Can't seem to get the new color calibration feature to work. Gets stuck on "Preparing"

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 06:24 PM PDT

I have IOS 14.6 beta on my iPhone XR and the Beta on my Apple TV 4K. When I go into the ATV settings and select Color Calibration, I get the immediate popup on my phone for color calibration and I tap continue with the phone inches in front of my TV. However, the TV just sits on the screen that says bring your phone close to the TV and my phone says "preparing" until it times out. If I tap "try again" on the phone it says turn the phone around to face the TV which I do, but The TV screen never goes to the screen with the box and all the colors to hold the phone in front of.

    Any suggestions?

Which model for video streaming & Apple Arcade on an HDTV?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 02:03 PM PDT

I've been holding out on buying an Apple TV knowing that new ones were likely on the way. I am currently a Roku user, but am considering an Apple TV for video streaming, playing Apple Arcade games, and to use it as a Home automation hub. My TVs are just regular HDTVs: not 4K and not HDR. Which model would be best for my needs?

I'm considering the new 4K since it has the A12 processor, which I assume will improve performance with Apple Arcade games. It would also be ready for whenever I eventually upgrade to a 4K TV (however, I have no plans atm.)

Edit: Also, 32 or 64 GB? I typically go larger, but have heard that with the Apple TV it doesn't matter so much. (Though, it's only $20...)

Apple TV notifications sent to iPhone, user specific?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:43 PM PDT

Few questions, my family seems to just use one profile when using our Apple TV. I'm not receiving episode notifications for my wife's shows.

Is there a way to turn these off for specific shows? I don't want all notifications off as I would like to receive them regarding shows I'm interested in.

How are these notifications delegated, per Apple TV profiles? How do specific show notifications get triggered, do you need to turn this on for each show? Assuming this is Apple just basing it off precious watched shows, hence why I'm receiving them.

Can you also edit what "channels" notifications are being sent for such as Hulu, etc? Any insight would be great

AppleTV Spatial Audio with iPhone Calibration

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:22 PM PDT

Apple will release color calibration for TVs using an iPhone. Can it do the same for Spatial Audio? For example, I take my iPhone and move it around the area near the center of my TV – similar to when you do AR, and place the iPhone there. Now the ATV has the location data to provide Spatial Audio to AirPods Pro and Max.

Am I thinking of this incorrectly?

Will you be buying the new Apple TV 4k Gen 2?

    Use cases for 64GB 4K (2nd Gen)?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 02:27 PM PDT

So, I'm finally getting an Apple TV (recent iPhone convert) and I am legitimately wondering the use case for a 64GB 4K Apple TV.

Believe me, I'm a huge future-proofer and hate the IDEA of running out of storage, but I rarely download media straight onto my media box, and outside of games, wonder why I'd need the extra 32GB.

Can you hook up an external HDD? That's another question, too.

Is the new Apple TV processor going to make picture quality for movies any better?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:16 AM PDT

    Dickinson

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:42 PM PDT

I just saw a preview for season 2 of Dickinson.. and it looks really good! I didn't even know there was a show about Emily Dickinson on Apple TV. Has anybody watched it? Is it good?

New purchases aren’t showing in Apple TV App Library or new releases

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 08:07 AM PDT

The last half dozen or so purchases aren't showing in the Apple TV app. I've tried force closing, hardware restart and even downloading the beta to see if that would push them through but nothing doing. They do show in the movie app however. Suggestions on what to do to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Is anyone put off with buying from itunes now?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:55 PM PDT

As title. No lies, I pirate loads of movies and tv shows. But if i enjoy something, i buy it. I pay for netflix, prime, disney+ and apple tv. I don't quite agree buying physical media as it just takes up too much room. So what i usually do i buy movies and tv shows on itunes, but i've really been put off with this recent apple lawsuit. While i know you cant expect everything to last forever, I hate the idea of apple(and a host of other big companies too) having the power to pull any purchase at any time and not refund the money. Makes me feel its a complete waste of time giving apple anymore of my money and that i should just pirate more.

    Anyone else feel like this?
