Magsafe charger fakes are getting better and better...

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 11:46 AM PST

Just picked up two Magsafe chargers from eBay, both have the same serial on the box which when checking the serial with Apple coverage checker, it says it's a returned item, so red flag right there as my one shows up as a Magsafe charger and of course has a different serial number.

The packaging looks good for a fake, all the logos are there, everything looks as it should and there isn't any obvious things missing from the labels etc, it looks how the real one would look at a glance.

The MagSafe animation comes up as expected when attached to the phone, I do feel that it doesn't have the same thunk to it as a real one does when it attaches. Sound weird but there you go.

But what's interesting is that running it through a voltmeter, it negotiates up to 10W but never goes above that level with a Anker 20w nano, even after leaving it for a good 5 mins. I then switch out to my legit one and it's up to 15W within a minute on the same phone.

I notice that the legit one starts to ramp up it's charge within about 5 seconds but the fake one would sit at <1W for about 15 seconds before it starts on it's way to 10W.

I don't have an Apple 20w brick to test with but it's interesting how it can get to 10W instead of 7.5W fast-charging speeds, maybe the fake is so good that it works with the official 20w (somehow?) but not the Anker, who knows?
