Convince me to switch: A Software Developer’s POV Posted: 04 Feb 2021 12:55 AM PST I used to despise Apple computers. Not because of the name "Apple" or "Mac", but because of Intel's overall poor processing unit's power. So because of that, I've stuck with a AMD Ryzen computer, and an old SurfacePro 4 laptop. Yes, I understand that's Intel. Well. Now my surface is dying. It barely lasts an hour away from its charger. I've known this for a while now and I've been saving up money ever since. Now that Apple has since released it's M1 processors, I'm met with a very welcomed dilemma. I guess my main concern is, ELI5 why should a software developer choose MacOS over Windows? Other than the processing units alone, is there something special about MacOS that many developers favor? [link] [comments]

Issue with clicking on desktop in big sir Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:18 AM PST Has anyone else had an issue were they can't interact with the desktop, I can't add a folder, click on the desktop, right click, when in an app I can't click on the desktop to take off control of the app...I've reset Pram and checked diagnostics but no luck. Apple support is worth nothing just telling me to reinstall the OS, which is a pain... anyone have any other options? [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:23 AM PST I've got an M1 MBA and there's an issue with the bluetooth for me. I've read that there are some issue with this but figured I'd see if there's a better solution to my thing as I haven't found anyone else mention this. Anyway, every time I turn on my headphones(I've got two pairs and it's the same issue with both) they connect just fine but the sound is very choppy. If I then click the bluetooth icon at the top and software disconnect them and then reconnect them it works fine. I'm basically hoping someone has a solution for not having to do that extra step every time I turn them on as it really shouldn't be necessary with a premium device. [link] [comments]

Big Sur poor performance on iMac 5k (2019) Posted: 04 Feb 2021 12:33 AM PST For the past two weeks the computer is freezing on an almost daily basis. Sometimes even with very few chrome tabs open and nothing else. At first I was getting the "system is out of application memory" but now it will just freeze on random occasions. I've run diagnostics, antivirus scans, did a general clean up, installed latest update. Does anybody else experience very poor performance lately on their systems? [link] [comments]

Weird Issues with External Display Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:56 PM PST Every time I wake up my external display, all my windows disappear somewhere between the laptop screen and the external display. If I select an app from the dock, I can see the shadow of the application window at the edge of my screen. If I try really hard, I can try and position my cursor between the two screens and pull the application back into the display. Most times, I have to quit the app and re start it. Other times, I wake up my laptop but it does not recognise the external display connected. Reconnecting the cables does nothing. Power cycling the monitor does nothing either. I just have to put the laptop to sleep and wake it up again for it to recognise the external display. Things have really gone to shit with Big Sur. Is anyone else experiencing similar issues? How do I fix this? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:20 PM PST I really feel like this should be an easy fix but I just can't get it to work. I want to use the "automatically hide and show the dock" setting, but when I check the box, the dock just hides and mousing over the bottom of the screen doesn't make it reappear. I've tried restarting, the killall Dock command, and deleting the com.apple.dock.plist file. I also recently deleted an app called "pick" which would hide the dock so I think that might have something to do with it but I'm not sure how to fix it. On Big Sur 11.2. Thank you for any help :) [link] [comments]
Fans going insane after Big Sur? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 01:15 PM PST I have a Macbook Air 13.3 2019 that I got in March of 2020. Everything was fine for awhile, until the battery and logicboard crapped its pants. I got all new interior and everything was fine until Big Sur came along and ever since then the fans just kick on when browsing the internet. Is this a common problem? I called Support and we did all of the standard troubleshooting but the fan is still just going for no reason. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:45 PM PST So I just tried installing big sur today and it restarted my computer like usual but it took close to an hour. It then proceeded to take me to the update assistant and it told me to choose a startup disk which I've never had to do before. It then crashed my whole computer and I can no longer access anything it just keeps restarting and doing that over and over again. I was just wondering if anyone could help me out on how to fix this I have lots of important files and unfortunately I don't have a backup of any of it. Please help. [link] [comments]
SponsorBlock Safari Extension: skip in-video ads Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:35 PM PST Hey I just noticed that there's a free 3rd party port of SponsorBlock for Safari and it's open source on Github. I combine this with Adguard for a great youtube adblocking experience on Safari Description of this extension from its site:

Big Sur 11.2 update increased transfer speeds via USB C? Posted: 03 Feb 2021 05:03 PM PST Only recently back to using a MBP 2019 with 4 USB C ports, the transfer speed seems a bit slow on 11.1. The update to 11.2 took a while likely because of the T2 chip. Once it was done I noticed transfer speeds close to 500 MB/sec when doing a CCC backup. Anyone else have similar experience?
