My first computer (M1 MacBook air), still trying to figure out how to use macOS

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:31 PM PST

Has anyone order the Pro Apps Bundle? If so, does the activation code will be emailed within 1-3 business days? Thank you!

Three *WEEK* wait to reset Apple ID password. WTF!?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:19 PM PST

So I got a new phone, traded in my old one and switched carriers, got a new phone number too. Old one doesn't exist anymore. Old one was a virtual number anyways, I don't even remember associating it with my account because it can't receive authentication codes anyways.

On the way home, I picked up my new M1 Air.

Forgot to change the number associated with my Apple ID, and needed to reset my password... got the link in my email, and now it says I have to wait until Feb 19th to reset my password.

What in the love of fuck is this about? Why am I being forced to wait three weeks? I got the code in my email, what's the issue? Good thing all my passwords are saved to my keychain, which can't sync because I can't log in because it wont let me change my password.

Great user experience, this is. First few hours on my new Mac will be resetting passwords for about two dozen things because I can't just get a code emailed to me. Well, I can.. thats just not good enough.

Upgrade mid 2009 MacBook Pro, need help

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:16 PM PST

I'm getting my MacBook tomorrow and I already got an ssd for it. Can I just open up the laptop and replace the hdd with the ssd and not have to copy anything on the hdd to the ssd? I won't have any saved files/documents on the hdd bcuz. So could I just skip the process of using a sata to usb cable to transfer things even though i have nothing to transfer?

Can't erase disks trying it for 15 hours!

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:54 PM PST

Hey there, I am using MacBook air 7.1 2017 with an upgraded internal ssd transcend jetdrive 850 960 gb

All of a sudden I've faced an macos crash error with a circle error sign. I rebooted my mac using an external HDD and saved all my necessary data however I can't erase my disks in internet recovery or regular recovery mode.

When I try to erase it with disk utilities it says permission denied or an internal error has occurred (~69623)

I tried to unmount disks via terminal and try to erase it there but it it got me the error saying writable disk is required.

I literally don't know what to do I've been trying to figure out this problem for almost 15 hours now. Extremely frustrated.

    SOS Newbie to Macs

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:16 PM PST

I am looking into buying a MacBook, and for never having owned one I'm not wanting to spend a pocket full until I'm sure I like them. I have found a few 2007 MacBooks for a decent price but the least update was Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

My question is, is it possible to upgrade these past the Lion update? I would potentially need the computer for school so I would likely need canvas/blackboard and maybe even zoom. Is it possible to make the laptop support these things?

    The Prodigal Mac user returns

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:06 PM PST

I just snagged an open box 13" Early 2020 Intel MBA with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD on Amazon Warehouse Deals for about $700 link. I considered the M one, but I have a rule that I never buy the first generation of anything. Plus, my budget can't justify dropping $1,000 like that.

My last MacBook was a 2008 white Core2Duo so I'm out of touch with the latest MacOS. What kind of integrations and optimizations can I look forward to?

Environment: - My wife and I have iPhones - We use iCloud for personal calendars - I use Google Calendar for business - I hate Microsoft Office but I'm a Google Sheets fiend - 1PasswordX for personal and business - Nextcloud on VPS for business - My 2021 hobby goal to learn SiriKit in Xcode.

Back story: For business reasons, I've been stuck on Windows for many years (in a nutshell, legacy apps). After really getting into Linux last year, I tried a Dell Latitude with Linux Mint for my personal laptop and it fell flat. Just too clunky for a daily driver.

Would the new MacBook Air be good for me?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:49 PM PST

I was going to get a MacBook Pro but I figured the new M1 chip for the MacBook Air may be better for me price wise. I am planning on running virtual machine and running CS software on it also. Would a MacBook Air hold up well or should I go for the MacBook Pro?

Hey guys! I'm considering buying a MacBook this week (still indecisive on Pro vs Air). I live in Toronto, Canada

I just wanted to know if it's better to buy it from the apple store in person or their website?

    Thanks

How to stop siri from making phone calls?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:27 PM PST

    Hi there,

I use siri on my mac for coin flips constantly, 50+ times a day. About 10% of the time it tries to call someone from factime, which induces panic and anxiety. I usually catch it but just now it's called someone I haven't spoken to in years.

Short of disabling siri or making my laptop unable to make calls, are there any options here? It's so embarassing and shitty when this happens.

Is 8GB RAM enough for an M1 air? Will be used mainly for Excel, office, browsing.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:42 AM PST

I am considering picking up an M1 Air. I heard the M1 is really efficient with allocating memory, would 8GB be enough for me to comfortably multitask, have multiple tabs open, run multiple big excel sheets?

    Thanks

     NightOwl: I can't find Finder... :(

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:52 PM PST

I've restarted my computer multiple times and given the app full access (In System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Privacy>Full disk access) but yet, Finder just isn't showing up in the "Always stay light:" app options...

Has anyone else with the app experienced something like this?

Side Note: The only reason I installed NightOwl was to keep the Finder and Notes apps light, yet only notes is showing up in the list? *long sigh* where is the Finder?

Will my MacBook be able to handle all this?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:20 PM PST

I currently own a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018 model) with the following specifications

    • 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
    • 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
    • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB

Additionally, I own two Samsung S24C450 monitors with the following specifications

    • 24" Wide, 1920 x 1200, 60 Hz, and DisplayPort output (no HDMI)

The monitors have been collecting dust, but I want to start using them. I need to purchase a USB-C to double DisplayPort adapter, which is quite pricey, so I want to ensure the computer can handle outputting to 2 monitors before I make any purchases.

The most intensive applications I would be using are Lightroom, Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro for photography/videography purposes. Additionally, I would also be using Zoom daily for schoolwork and general apps (Spotify, Netflix, Chrome, etc.) for everyday productivity and entertainment.

I can also just use one of the monitors if necessary, instead of both. I just want to make sure I don't ruin any of the tech, computer or monitors.

I do not have much experience with technical specifications, so any help would be much appreciated!

I got my Macbook Pro 16 Inch in June of 2020 and the design capacity of my battery was 8790 mah. Now, it is down to 7200. Isnt this really bad? How has it lost so much capacity over such a short period of time?

    MacBook Pro M1

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST

As an exclusively iPad Pro user for a number of years, I finally purchased my first Mac in nearly a decade. It is a very nice machine, however I'm disappointed with trackpad sensitivity and scrolling speed. Perhaps I've been spoiled by iPad's inertial fast scrolling and touch screen speed. I've cranked the trackpad sensitivity to its highest along with scrolling speed and it still feels slow, and what's the word..."draggy". I've installed BetterTouchTool and cranked that up too and it didn't seem to make as much difference as I hoped. Is there any way to get the trackpad (and Magic Mouse too) sensitivity I desire? I feel like I'm missing something.

Windows user here. Should I make the switch?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:52 AM PST

    Hi,

I bought a GE66 Raider 2 months ago (>2000€ laptop with NVIDIA 2070 and latest CPU, 16gb of RAM) and it's been a nightmare ever since.

This doesn't feel like a premium machine AT ALL.

Battery lasts MAX 2 hours at decent performance, the CPU is constantly at 80°, making the keyboard itself hot (it's all plastic), performance are poor if fans are not at 3000RPM all the time.

This thing is good for gaming - and that's it. With fans at 7000RPM (both) + external table with fans, making the room feel like an airport.

I work 95% of the time. I don't need a gaming machine, I just need a performant, reliable, nice to use laptop.

Do you think the MacBook pro m1 would be the right choice for me?

    I mainly use:

    - SEO Powersuite

    - Screencast O Matic

    - Chrome (20+ tabs open, all the time)

    - Brave (20+ tabs open, all the time)

    - Edge (10+ tabs open, all the time)

So I have 50+ tabs open on 3 browsers at all times. That's the most demanding thing I do, since it takes 80% of my current RAM.

I also use 2 screens. This would be of monumental importance with the 13" mac, it's tiny for me. I'm used to 16-17".

If I sell this laptop, they will value it at 1300€ (700 less than the price of purchase, insane lol). It means I have to spend around 700-800€ more to buy a MacBook pro.

Also, is the apple care necessary? right now? or can I buy it later?

Do you think the switch is worth 700-800€? It means the total price for my new pc (devaluation + original price) would be around 2800€... maybe a bit too much for the new MacBook pro m1?

I don't really have a choice though, I either keep this and suffer for years or change it for a mac or asus, which would cost 500-600€ more anyway.

    USB C Power Delivery

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:48 AM PST

Hi, with the current gen macbook pro how does usb c power delivery work? Can I use a usb to hdmi which supports power delivery, or is a specific port type required?

My aim is to have one cable from monitor to macbook and then use wireless peripherals for everything else.

    Cheers

edit: my monitor has a usb port which supports power deliver - does this mean I could use a usb - usb-c cable and use this for both power and display?

Anyway to re-map Fn keys on the new M1 MacBooks to control keyboard backlight?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:32 PM PST
