Dropped Apple MacBook Pro, Keyboard/Trackpad Stopped Working - Here's How I Fixed It for $25 Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:37 AM PST My MacBook Pro keyboard and touchpad stopped working. Here's how I fixed it myself for $25. And I am not a techie! I wanted to share how I quickly fixed this issue, because it saved me a ton of headaches and a couple hundred dollars. So, I dropped my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15", Mid 2015) A1398 the other day –– it slid off of the coffee table. When I picked it up I noticed a dialogue box that said my keyboard is not working. I thought I'd restart and fix the issue. Not quite. After completing the two main resets (SMC and PRAM/NVRAM) manually, every time I booted up I would see a dark grey screen with a white dialogue box (and inside an illustration of a Magic Mouse and TrackPad**)**. This user took a picture of the same problem I had: https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/gbjb2v/2015_macbook_pro_trackpad_and_mouse_not_working/ I couldn't figure out why my keyboard/trackpad were not working! I figured I had knocked something loose when I dropped it. After calling Apple Support, and finding a certified technician, they wanted me to
I didn't want to:
And the Apple Store was booked indefinitely, given Covid and an increase in demand. So, I figured I'd give it a go first. Here's what I did, instead:
If you need to replace your cable, you can buy one from Ifixit.com for a couple of bucks, buy the toolkit to remove the bottom cover of the laptop, and and watch this guys video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzcBL1NBtik&ab_channel=IAmAFixer) to remove your old cable and install the new cable. It is incredibly simple. After doing this, I can't imagine paying someone several hundred dollars to diagnose and fix this issue when I did it for $25. Keep in mind:
As a sidebar, an Apple Expert in Reddit, said the following on another thread: The connection from the keyboard is routed through the trackpad to the logic board. I've seen the flex cable that goes from the trackpad to the logic board get damaged from too much pressure from the bottom case. This could be the case for you as well. Take it to Apple or an AASP. https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/6ho4l5/macbook_pro_keyboard_and_touchpad_not_working/ If you don't want to take it to Apple, then you can do what I did and save yourself time and money. Hope this helps someone, as Apple Support will always run you through the two main resets and then tell you to go to the Apple Store. Lol [link] [comments] |

Apple "never received" my old device but tracking says delivered and signed for? Still being billed. Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:24 AM PST I got my 11 Pro last year with the iPhone Upgrade Program which allowed me to upgrade again this year to the 12 Pro by just sending it back. I picked up the new phone at the store and they told me they weren't accepting returns there because COVID. I was told they'd send me a box and return label in the mail, which they did, which I used. The tracking even says delivered and signed for. But a couple weeks later I received an email that said my return had been cancelled due to it not being received. I have already spoken with Apple about this but so far nothing has been resolved and I am still waiting in limbo to hear? Has anyone else had this experience? Just looking for advice. The iPhone Upgrade goes on your personal credit so I still have to continue to pay the bill just to stay in good standing. [link] [comments] |
iPhone receiving some iMessages but MacBook is receiving all? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:37 PM PST I have an iPhone XS and recently purchased a MacBook Pro M1 chip. It's getting quite often that when I turn my Mac on and I'd get iMessage notifications of messages I didn't receive on my iPhone, then these messages would later come up on my phone without any notifications. I checked that my send & receive have the same addresses on both, but the problem persists. I've never had this problem with my old Mac Air and I'm getting so frustrated because I'd miss out on important messages... Now I have turned on "Text message forwarding" on my phone so hopefully it works?? Is there something else that causes the problem? Is anyone having or had this issue? [link] [comments] |

my mac suddenly started making this noise, what could it be?? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:58 PM PST |
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:43 PM PST Yesterday, a vertical green line appeared on the right side of my phone. I intend to get the screen fixed or replaced, but the problem is, I live in a provincial city in a third world country, so the nearest apple store would be 90km away. Is it worth it to try and get my phone fixed from a local repair shop in my city, or should I go out of my way to visit an apple store that costs at least twice more for a repair? [link] [comments] |

Having trouble installing OS X on a Mac gifted to me Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:36 PM PST Hi! I am primarily a Windows user, but I was recently given a Mac. The problem though, is that it can't boot and instantly goes to the OS X Utilities menu. I'm not 100% sure what model it is. It's not a laptop, but an all-in-1 sorta thing. I looked at the bottom of it, and it says "A1311" so I figure that means something? I reformatted the main drive on it, thinking that it'd be like installing Windows & I can just pop a USB in there and get moving, but I can't figure out how to. I also tried using the "Reinstall OS X" button, but all I get it an error that says "A required download is missing." The recovery for it is also corrupted. It's trying to install El Capitan btw. I tried looking up the error for literal hours, but I couldn't find much besides people saying "oh, set the clock to this specific date!" which didn't work for me. I also saw people saying "boot the computer in Internet Recovery Mode" but, for some reason, I just can't get into the menu. I'm using a standard Windows keyboard, and keys don't seem to register until the computer is fully booted up. I also tried looking up a guide on making a bootleg USB installation disc sorta thing, but the only tutorials I could find relied on the fact that the user already had a working OS X to boot to. Which, obviously, wont work for me. I'm sorry for laying such a puzzle on y'all, but I'm completely out of ideas and very exhaused from trying to get this thing to work for 5 hours straight. Any advice is completely appreciated. Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:08 PM PST So I just recently got the year in review memory on my old iPhone X, which I have unlinked from my iCloud but wasn't signed out of, but not on my iPhone XS which I got from my mom (everything is disconnected and it's completely mine, I'm signed into iCloud and everything). Could this be because i just started using the XS on Christmas so I haven't had it for a year or is this a glitch. It would be nice to have that memory. [link] [comments] |

Apps Suddenly Stop Working, Reinstalling doesn't work but using other Apple ID works just fine Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:17 PM PST I'll clarify here: For reason suddenly, apps I downloaded from my Japanese Apple ID (for App Store) suddenly stops working on my iPhone (launching them makes it automatically crash), but using my other Apple ID (United States) works just fine. Redownloading apps (or downloading any app at all) in the Japanese App Store wouldn't work, as it'll just turn back into the "Download" button. It's not the case for the US store. I don't really want to reset my phone to factory settings and set everything up again, so is there something I can do to restore and stop all of my apps from crashing again? It's been a really frustrating past few days. Thanks. EDIT: I'll add this here: Restoring from a backup from a few days ago (Dec 27th) would eventually break my apps again in a few hours. I remember is syncing my music from my Macbook back before apps break. [link] [comments] |
imessage read status not syncing Posted: 31 Dec 2020 03:53 PM PST So I am on the latest public version of ios on all of my devices (iphone, ipad, apple watch) and for some reason imessage doesn't show as read on my ipad and apple watch even though I have read them on iphone and have even responded to messages on the iphone as well. I factory reset the apple watch and setup as new device and this did nothing. Is there something I should do? Should I factory reset my iphone? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:38 PM PST I've activated the 12 pro max and I've factory reset the XS max. *note: my new phone is working just fine after being activated* I signed into the XS max with my son's Apple ID and set everything up. When I go to Apple ID on the old phone and click his phone it still has my number attached to it. Now I looked at my daughter's phone which she's been using for a few years (also wifi only - my husband's old phone) and mt husband's phone number is attached to that one so I'm assuming that's normal? what's not normal is that I can turn off wifi on my old phone and it still has lte. Will this eventually go away or will it say it has LTE but just not actually work..? THE OTHER ISSUE. under messages I changed the send and receive to his email but it's still saying "waiting for activation". I did test it and the messaging seems to work fine. I went to FaceTime and changed it to the email but there's a loading symbol next to my number (his email is checked tho) and when I click on FaceTime from the Home Screen it says "waiting for activation". Is this something that will take time or is there something I need to try to fix it all..? Please let me know if I'm not making sense! Sometimes I struggle putting my thoughts into words. And thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Can I use touch id to approve apps in Family sharing "Ask to buy"? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:09 PM PST A family member recently set up family sharing for iOS, however whenever she approves or denies someone buying an app, she has to enter her full apple id password. Is it possible to disable this or use touch id? [link] [comments] |
Side button on iPhone 6 stuck on mute, looking for a software option to circumvent this. Posted: 31 Dec 2020 03:21 PM PST I've had this problem for a while and had looked around in the settings, but have found no option for it. I remember there was an option to switch the button to be meant for the 'lock screen' function instead of the 'mute' one, but I've not been able to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Btw, my software version is: 13.1.3 [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to sync music to an iPod Shuffle without iTunes? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:26 PM PST Hi everyone! I've recently found my old 2gb iPod shuffle from years ago, and I'm wanting to put some sleep sounds/music on it so I don't waste the battery life on my phone overnight. Seems simple enough, but the little bugger refuses to sync with iTunes! I'm using the latest version of iTunes, and it can see the iPod, I can see it's info, but it refuses to let me sync/update/anything! I've searched online but every forum points me towards third party software which, as you may imagine, I'm not too comfortable about downloading all willynilly onto my computer. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments] |
No crash logs after crash on 2014 Macbook Pro running High Sierra Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:50 PM PST Spouse is very technical (retired from an ISP) and he's stumped. I've got an MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, running High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G14042). It has crashed 5 times in the last 2 days so far and there are no log files. Nothing at all. It goes from standard log entries to "starting". He opened it up and nothing looks to be a problem internally - looks surprisingly clean since the last time he was in there. At first we thought it might be Chrome (Version 87.0.4280.88 (Official Build) (x86_64)) but then it crashed under Safari as well (Version 13.1.2 (13609.3.5.1.5)) I've got backups now and we're watching the temperatures, but absolutely no crash files is such a stumper. It's running at the moment - but I really am concerned. It might be it's time to go - that's great if it is. I'd still like to figure out what's up. Anyone wanna ponder this or have clues? We can easily access the console if there's something we've overlooked. Thanks y'all! [link] [comments] |
How do I remove iCloud photos from my phone without deleting it from the iCloud Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:49 PM PST |
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:40 PM PST So first off I'm new to Apple.. I got a new job and I'm using my first MBP. I came from a Linux environment so it's not HUGELY different however I am trying to get Oh-My-Zsh working even though Big Sur has ZSH by default. I like the small differences that OMZ has.Anyway I'm hoping someone has a definitive way of 'installing' it on Big Sur. I've found a few Blogs that talk about installing is on MacOS but since ZSH is standard now I'm totally unsure if the OMZ is replacing the default binaries are what. Anyone know and if not what is the location for the OMZ binaries because I cannot find them on this system. [link] [comments] |
Hacked or spam, I’m not sire what to do. Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:13 PM PST First I want to say that I am a 50+ female and I am not good with tech. My iPhone 7 has been getting messages lately that pop up and say, "You're google account has been compromised." I was getting a couple of them a week and ignored them. Last night my phone suddenly went to my calendar app and had three time slots populated with: "Want to f@&k at my house?" Like an idiot (in my freak out moment) I tapped on them to try to figure out where they came from. (I know, totally stupid) They went to porn sites and adds for internet security. They disappeared within a few hours. Questions:
Thanks for reading this long, rambling, old woman.🤪 [link] [comments] |
