Does anyone think the Music app will be fixed in Big Sur?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:02 PM PST

I'm so sick of the terrible awkward search between your library and apple music, the going to new page to open an album instead of keeping on the same page, and the slow performance.

Is there any word of them fixing it? Have they acknowledged the flaws in the app at all?

Just curious. I'm pretty hopeless about this but maybe someone knows a bit more

MacBook Pro battery service recommended message after just 299 cycles. It was purchased in 2018 Jan and only used it for an hour or two everyday for basic browsing and kept it in sleep mode rest of the time. Is this normal? What can be done to find the problem?

S.O.S. Big Sur goes in big crash smash leaves me in big do dos

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:58 AM PST

Somehow my Mac OS X system running Big Sur beta has had a bad day. It appears to have lost its non data volume and won't boot from the data volume. As it doesn't recognise the Big Sur system as a valid boot disk I can't access Big sur recovery mode. Switched to an old Catalina partition in the hope that I might be able to create a Big Sur Install usb but the original install has been deleted. Catalina is almost 100% beach balling and incredibly slow - all browser apps are unresponsive. Only really terminal, system prefs, occasional finder. Managed to force Software update to start downloading Big Sur install 15 hours so I left it in overnight to find that update failed. I have this weird new 'Update' volume which looks to contain recovery type stuff.. low level drivers and the like. 22 GB partition but only 500 kB of data. There's also new 0GB volume with no name that Catalina can't tell if it's mounted or not and can't repair as its 'made by a higher power' - big sur. I feel kinda snookered. Any creative minds should suggest possible escape routes? Anyone know where you can download a legit copy of Big Sur install beta outside of the messianic grip of Apple?

Safari history not fully clearing on Catalina?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:06 PM PST

Is anyone else having this issue? Since I updated to Catalina two weeks ago, I've been having trouble fully clearing my history on Safari. I'd do my usual History > Clear History (All History) several times and quitting Safari each time, but some sites would still be there or I'd still be logged into my gmail account. I like to clear my history daily so this has been very frustrating. Anything I can do to resolve this issue?

    Internal root CA not trusted

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:00 PM PST

I added my internal root CA to Keychain > System, then set When using this certificate to Always Trust, but Chrome, Firefox, and Safari still doesn't trust my sites certs.

    According to this thread https://github.com/symfony/cli/issues/146

It's because the root CA validity period is longer than 825 days. Is this true for even root CAs?! If so, this is ridiculous. It's standard practice to set Root CAs for 10 years or longer. Who really wants to roll out new root CAs every couple of years.

Is there a solution to this?

Can I move my IOS backup files to an external hard drive?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:37 PM PST

I backed up my ios files to my MacBook months ago and only now realized how inconvenient it is for the files to take up roughly 60GB of my disk space haha. I am not really familiar with these things so is it possible to just move the IOS files to a hard drive? I was thinking to just literally drag and drop it into the hard drive but I don't think that's the proper way ahaha. How can i move them to my hard drive correctly? any help is appreciated!! stay safe everyone

iCloud Photos Mac - Painstakingly slow upload?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:55 PM PST

I decided to give iCloud Photos a try on my 16" MacBook Pro.

I have 1,700 pictures and 170 videos in total (~50GB). My internet connection is 1,000 Mbps up and down.

I first uploaded everything to Google Photos; took less than 5 minutes and everything was done.

Then I added them to the Photos app on my Mac and turned on iCloud Photo syncing. It has been over 24 hours and still there are 491 items left to sync.

Does anyone know why it's so slow or how it's working under-the-hood that requires it to operate at this speed?

I've enabled power napping, left my Mac plugged in the entire time with 100% battery life, and WiFi on.

    UPDATE:

I'm starting to have hunch about what is actually going on. Most the videos are in .mov format as they are old family videos converted and exported via QuickTime Player.

According to Apple's website iCloud Photos only supports HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEVC, and MP4. com.apple.photos.VideoConversionService is consistently running in the background which makes me think iCloud is attempting to convert videos locally and then upload. It's also likely they are encoding at a slower pace to prevent you from knowing that it's happening on your Mac and to prevent it from hindering your foreground experience.

Sneaky on Apple's part to use a cost saving architecture like this. Wear out the consumer's device to process and convert media before uploading. Verses Google's setup where you dump it all in their cloud and they let the servers handle processing/converting.

I wish Apple would be a bit more transparent on how this actually works.

Any reason I can’t delete this file/app? It isn’t in the grid of apps when I hit the f4 button and takes up lots of space.

    Photos turning grey after editing

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:18 PM PST

I am currently editing photos on the Photos app that were taken as RAW files. Random photos are turning grey after editing and saving the changes - both as a thumbnail (see photo attached) and when I click on the photo. While on the grey photo, if I click 'edit' again, the photo re-appears, but then turns grey again if I save the edits again. If I remove the edits, the photo returns to normal. I tried removing the edits, then re-editing, which worked for a couple of photos but not for others.

Does it have something to do with the size of the file and editing increases it? That's the only thing I can think of.

Any way to sync folder file arrangement (not sure what it's called)

Usually I sort my uni stuff by week (like in the screenshot) by dragging files to a new row for a new week. Any way of syncing this across computers especially as I have a windows desktop in my dorm. Any help is much appreciated as well as any alternative solutions 🙏

Help with Kernel Panic? com.apple.xpc.remote.target / Submit Diags

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:36 AM PST

I've got a Mac mini (2018) running OS X 10.14.6 (18G6032) that is having kernel panics frequently. I believe the process triggering the KP is com.apple.xpc.remote.target but I'm not sure what that is/does. I'm not super familiar with reading KP logs and was hoping someone could take a look for me?
