The one thing no reviewer is mentioning about the M1 Macbook that was a dealbreaker for me.

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 09:05 AM PST

I watched about 10 videos on Youtube last night about the new M1 Macbook and finally made up my mind to go with the Macbook Pro 16 GB RAM until I read a comment somewhere that these new Macbooks do not support two external displays, only one. I understand this is a first gen chip but this is a huge disappointment and from all the videos I watched, not a single reviewer mentioned this. I've been waiting since the summer to upgrade my 2014 Macbook Pro and now I'll be waiting another year.

    MacBook Air m1 - 8 gb vs 16gb Test

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 11:03 AM PST

Just wanted to share with you a little test I did with my new 16gb/1TB/8 Core GPU MacBook Air m1 vs my wife's new 8gb/256gb/7 Core GPU MacBook Air m1.

    Memory Test / Comparison

    • Exported the same 456 images in Lightroom Classic
    • 49MB file size each, 23 gigs total.
    • Made various adjustments, "auto", clarity, brightness etc to all 456 images while exporting.
    • Ran safari with 5 tabs playing 4K YouTube videos
    • Opened several apps on both machines.

    Here's the video. No audio.

    https://youtu.be/QyrhkXmzN2Q

Memory pressure never even turned yellow on either unit. The 8gb actually finished first (very close, and no idea why).

TL;DR 8gb is plenty for most people. I returned my 16gb and got an 8gb base model.

Edit: removed audio, and added details.

PSA - Do not erase your boot drive and try to reinstall Big Sur on the new M1 MacBooks, you will brick your system

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 03:36 PM PST

On the topic of IFUT, I was having issues with airplay and sidecar after updating to 11.0.1. After trying a couple solutions from Apple support, they said I could try a reinstall. I wasn't that far in so I thought what the hack. Huge mistake! The reinstall for the M1 man is not working, about 20 minutes in, the install will error out and Apple has not fix at this time.

Long time Windows user switching to Macbook

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 06:43 PM PST

I have been a windows user all my life, but I was recently gifted a macbook air (2017, 128GB storage)

I have gone through a few beginner guides about switching to a macbook, but is there anything in particular I should keep in mind that's not mentioned in these guides?

Also, my main question, is 128GB sufficient, or would it be better if I purchased an external HDD or extra iCloud storage?

Finally, if I should purchase extra storage, which is preferable in the long term? The external HDD or iCloud storage?

    Random Purple Flash and Restart

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:25 PM PST

Hi all. I just got the new MBA M1 base model recently and I've noticing random problems. Sometimes when I connect the external display through a USB-C hub, there's a loud crack sound and the external monitor goes black. I don't know if it has to do with the USB-C hub but I never had that issue with my XPS 15.

However, just recently, I got a weird purple screen then a complete restart. If anyone has some experience, I hope you can chime in. I might just return it or get a new one or something :(

Macbook Pro Retina-Booting off an external drive

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 04:47 PM PST

I looked around Google and found some conflicting information so I wanted to ask around here for some confirmation. I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina with a potentially dead SSD drive (has detection issues). I was wondering if I could boot off an external NVMe drive (Samsung 970 + USB enclosure). I only need this to work for a few days and I'll probably scrap the 970 drive for another project. I know I can replace the drive with an OWC SSD but I only need this laptop to work for a few days and that's it. I do have another MacBook to download macOS and install it onto the external drive. Will this work? Or am I an idiot?

    Thanks!

Late 2008 Macbook - Waaaayyy overdue for an upgrade (dilemma)

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 08:15 PM PST

I have a late 2008 13" MacBook (8GB RAM 512GB HDD) I've been using since graduating high school in 2009. It's done everything I've ever needed to do until now. I've gotten into web development in the last few years so I'm using a few more apps these days. And my operating system limits my ability to get the most current versions of some of the software I'm using or would like to use.

All year I've been telling myself that I'm going to get myself a new 16" MacBook Pro for Christmas. Then the M1 MacBooks dropped.

My side hustle is steady enough to finally justify spending good money on a computer upgrade. I know I'll be blown away by anything newer than what I already have. But part of me almost thinks it's silly to spend a lot of money on the last generation of intel chip MacBooks when the M series of chips seems to be a game changer for performance.

I'm really needing to upgrade soon and I definitely don't want to settle for another 13" screen. My heart has been set on the new 16" MBP and I know I won't be disappointed if I get one. But I also know within the next year or two there will be a 16" MBP with an M series chip.

Someone hold my hand and tell me it's going to be okay for me NOT to have the newest, shiny MacBook in town.

Do the M1 MacBooks still have ghosting displays?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 08:03 PM PST

I have the 16" MBP and I am not a fan of the lower response time display. If the ghosting issue is somehow gone on the M1 MacBook Pro, I'm thinking about upgrading, but no reviews have mentioned the display.

Those of you that have the M1, do you still have ghosting issues?

Any comments from Apple on iOS/iPad apps not using fullscreen on M1 chips?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 03:23 PM PST

It's a bit of a disappointment that iOS and iPad apps can't use fullscreen on the new M1 chips.

Has anybody heard anything from Apple if this will be changed in the (near) future?

2017 MacBook Pro having WiFi problems and it’s covered by AppleCare. Would I be able to trade it in for a different computer?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 06:31 PM PST

A few weeks ago I started noticing that my MBP would connect to my home WiFi for about a minute, and then stop connecting, even though it still showed it was connected in the menu bar. I don't believe it's a network issue as all of my other devices connect and have no problem staying connected...just the MBP. I first called Apple support and while they were able to fix the issue with my school WiFi problem, they still were not able to fix the issue with my house WiFi. I even brought it into Geek Squad (because I got it from Best Buy) and they took it in and a day later they gave it back and said there were no issues with it. So tonight I checked the WiFi again and it would connect for about a minute, and then it would disconnect. If I'm covered under apple care, would I be able to just trade in my MBP for something else, or at least receive like 80% back and use that to go towards a different one?

Thank you for reading this! I apologize if this isn't the right post for this subreddit.

    Office 365 for Mac

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 04:39 PM PST

Apologies if this is the wrong post to make (maybe I post in the purchase thread?) but does anyone use Office 365 for Mac? Is it much different than the Windows version? I had a Chromebook, bought a Windows laptop yesterday and don't like it so I'm thinking of going MacBook. But I need to be able to use Office in its full functionality. Thanks!

HELP! Best case for MacBook Air (Retina 13 in - 2019)

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 04:39 PM PST

So I'm a college student who needs my laptop a lot. My backpack is constantly filled to the brim, and I can't put my naked MacBook in it because I'm scared it will break or get bent.

What's the best case for my MacBook? It's the 2019 MacBook Air and the Model # is A1932.

I do have a few things I'm looking for

    1. I want it to be strong enough that it won't break or get bent if I put it in my backpack which does not have a laptop sleeve, and will have multiple textbooks and binders in it (the backpack has 2 sleeves and textbooks are in one and the binders are in another) but I have a habit of leaning my backpack on it's back against things and that's most likely where I'll put the MacBook (in the pocket so it would be directly against my back) so I'm worried about the laptop taking the brunt of the weight of my backpack.

    2. I want a case that allows me to open my laptop more than 90 degrees

    3. A little stylish and affordable (broke college kid here)

Thank you all for the help.

Size of Case/Body: M1 MacBook Air vs Latest Intel Air

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 06:52 AM PST

I just picked up an M1 MacBook Air and want to put a clear skin from SlickWraps on it, but they don't list any skins specific to the M1s -- only the "2020 MacBook Air." Does anyone know whether the bodies of these two devices, including port locations, etc., are identical?

    Is a M1 MBA a Worthwhile Upgrade over a 2019 MBA?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 05:17 AM PST

For the most part I like my current 2019 MBA, but the butterfly keyboard is kind of janky, and the thermal throttling this thing experiences can sometimes be absolutely maddening. It also seems like the performance can sometimes just be plain bad on simple things like having a browser window open with Facebook, I regularly will have a single FB chat window open and it will lag just doing simple tasks like bringing up the window for GIF responses, delayed sending of text, etc.

They are not the end of the world, but for something I use all day its a mildly frustrating. I know the benefits of the M1 chip but I guess my question is more, will it solve issues like this? If the benefit largely comes down to just battery life, its not really worth it as I am always near power to plug it in, and even the keyboard I can live with. But if there is a tangible increase in performance of apps and just browsing the internet becomes less of a chore, it becomes a lot more appealing as I can still flip this Macbook to offset some of the cost.

No 3 buttons on the top left (close, minimize, and full screen) on some program (like in the picture) after the macOS Big Sur update. Only way to close it is by right click and quit or force quit. Does someone know how to fix this?

Currently own an early 2015 13" Retina, I can't decide what to get next! Help!

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 02:59 PM PST

I currently own an early 2015 13" Retina Macbook Pro 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

It's honestly done me good and I really like the laptop however, the battery is lasting at most like 3 or 4 hours at this point and I realized that 256GB is not enough at all (I have to constantly be deleting files). Plus, it also slows down quite a bit at times.

I do a little coding, and just general laptop use (lots of Reddit, torrenting, Netflix, Discord, etc). Most of my work is done on a browser, Visual Studio Code, and some light video editing, so I don't need an insane ultra power machine, but I do think I want at minimum 16GB RAM and 512GB storage (maybe even 1TB).

I know the new M1 Macbooks came out and they've been getting fantastic reviews but I can't seem to decide which one to get. I don't really care about the touch bar at all (would honestly prefer to do without it) and price is irrelevant at that cost imo. As far as I can tell I have 3 options:

    1. Macbook Air M1 13" 16GB RAM and 512GB Storage: $1,449.00
    2. Macbook Pro M1 13" 16GB RAM and 512GB Storage: $1,699.00
    3. Wait another year for the next M1 models which will probably have better specs.

    What do you guys think?
