    Buying a MacBook Pro

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:23 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I am looking to pick up a used MBP and I have found one on eBay - a 2017 MBP 2.3Ghz i5, 8GB Ram, two battery cycles, I think I could get it for around £400, which seems really cheap.

The thing is that there are a few things wrong with the laptop, so I thought I'd turn to this community to see if they're repairable, or something that wouldn't be a big deal.

The first is one of the thunderbolt 3 ports doesn't work, the other does and charges fine.

The letter V is not back-lit (not a big issue for me.

The main one is that the power button does not work, so the laptop just powers up when opening the lid. Is this something that would be fixable at all?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:31 PM PDT

So in my price range I can either get a 16 RAM MacBook Air or a 8 RAM MacBook Pro. I'm not sure which would be best to get. Any advice?

2017-2020 model users, what are the reasons yours broke by itself before, and had to turn it in? (excluding typical keyboard problems)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 05:46 AM PDT

I've been curious on how problematic the recent models have been. apple care was definitely worth it, in this case. But now I feel apple is far from the quality it's known for: having macbooks that stay in practical working order for 5 years and even almost a decade.

I own an MBP 2017 128GB no touchbar, and it broke at least once a year.
I'm pretty sure i've taken good care of it, never had any sort of physical damage. I plug it in surge protectors, etc. i don't use third-party software that meddles with the hardware. I, of course, want to make it last long, and intend to do what I can to make it that way. just the thing is, I use it everyday, within a range of maybe 2-12 hours a day.

    Nov 2017 - bought it.
Oct 2018 - top part of screen started to have burn lines (gets worse as it's turned on for longer)
Sep 2019 - Backlight suddenly died. it still works, but had to use a flashlight to see what's on my monitor. Had to do it to make a time machine backup before turning in to service center.
Oct 2020 - touchpad haptic feedback becoming weak to almost un-feelable. now, force touch won't work anymore. I suspect there might be battery bloat, cause the touchpad is noticeably popping up a bit. FYI, i've been a bluetooth mouse user since the first month, at that.

all of these have been replaced for free, thanks to AppleCare+. Now I feel that it is a must for any recent MacBook purchase.

Air vs Pro 2020 for a “writer” and college student.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:33 PM PDT

I need a machine for causal use. I want to be able to have many tabs open etc, but probably will never be using any programs that are too demanding of the computer. The main purpose of my purchase is to have a superior typing experience, and being able to send large MS word files to others via email. I had my mind up to buy the air, I'm just worried about it getting hot. I like the wedge look and gold color, and prefer a row of f keys to the Touch Bar on the pro. I'd like to be able to use it outside but I feel the screen on either the pro or air is probably insufficient for use on a sunny day? Obviously the Pro has the better display, but I see this being the only advantage it has, where the are several things I prefer about the air.

Pros of MacBook Air: looks nicer and comes in gold, more portable, better battery life, has F-key row, $200 cheaper..Possibly more comfortable to type on due to wedge shape?

Pros of pro: screen is 20% brighter with superior color accuracy, better thermals (which im assuming has the potential to affect the overall longevity of the machine?) but is this even a concern for casual use?

If the thermals shouldn't be an issue, that just leaves the display. If the air's screen is sufficient for use in a bright room, I'll probably go with that.

Either way I go I'll be getting the i5/16 gb, because I want this computer to last me 8 years.

    Apple ID invalid on Messages?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:21 PM PDT

I've tried Googling this problem the last few days and I'm striking out.

Last week my iMessages stopped working on my 2015 MBP. Still works on my other devices. I noticed I wasn't signed in. So I signed in and I got the message "an error occurred during authorization."

That's when I Googled and did a few things. I made sure my Mac was up to date, I changed the system time, I signed out of my Apple ID on my computer and signed back in.

I changed my Apple ID password. And now will occasionally get an incorrect password or ID pop up, but usually still the error one. If I purposely enter an incorrect password, I immediately get an incorrect password/ID message.

Any help? I saw some troubleshooting for Macs before High Sierra with certifications in Keychains, but that method seems to be outdated now.

Can someone let me know if this is worth $1000?

2019, used but in excellent condition, 13.3in LED blacklit 2560x1600 retina with true tome display.

1.7Ghz intel i7 8th gen, with 4 cores, 8gb of Ram, 256gb storage, intel iris plus 645 - also, touch bar, two thunderbolt 3 ports

The person I'm buying it for will be using it for more software heavy things, like engineering. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Macbook Pro 15”, 2016 is terribly slow

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:59 PM PDT

Since a couple of months ago I've noticed that my macbook is painfully slow when I work on Chrome or Zoom. Lately it has even come to it becoming almost unusable while I only have youtube open on chrome and nothing else.

I think is a memory issue but I just noticed that the battery is saying "Service Battery".

    My Specs are:

    • 16 of RAM 2133 MHz LPDDR3
    • 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    • Radeon Pro 460 4GB -MacOS Catalina 10.15.4

In general I should have no issues with a simple Zoom Call or a Youtube video playing while I use microsoft word but its happening.

Any clues on what exactly can be happening? Should I replace the battery or the RAM memories?

    Thanks in advance.

    MacBook keeps breaking

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:37 AM PDT

    Hello,

My macbook pro is 3 months old and and has so far broken 2 times. First time had logic board failure and apparently some display issue and surprisingly after replacement seems to be having the exact same problem after just 2 weeks.

I bought it from a premium reseller and to be frank I think it's a defective unit from the start. I told them I wanted a refund or a replacement as its paranormal for a macbook to be braking this soon and since they said they couldn't replace it I asked for refund which I doubt they'll approve.

Any ideas what I should do? I'm at my wits end losing days and days of work dealing with repairs.

Opening a video in fullscreen mode seems to crop to fill the entire display

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 09:11 AM PDT

This only recently started happening, after having my screen and keyboard replaced on my 2018 13" MBP.

When I open a video in fullscreen, it now appears to fill the entire screen rather than having black bars at the top and bottom, meaning I'm losing some content on screen. Any idea what's causing this?

    Macbook Air 2020 i5 512gb or Macbook Pro 2020 Base Model 256gb?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT

These laptops are the same price and i am unsure whether to buy the air with larger storage or the pro with less storage ? I am extremely put off by the cooling system on the air with the i5 processor and it not being able to handle simple tasks. I will be using this laptop for university and am unsure what the best decision would be for me. Does the MBA i5 really overheat that much for it to be not worth the £1,000+? thanks !

    Macbook microphone issue when calling

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 04:26 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I have a bit of a problem and was wondering if anyone had a similar experience. When I call someone via Facebook Messenger on my 4th gen Macbook Pro 13in, the other person says that my audio is weird. I sound clear for a second, then I sound as if I am covering my microphone for a second (sounds like I'm underwater), and this repeats the entire call. I have tried wiping the speaker grills which is where the microphones are I think, but it didn't solve anything. Does anyone have any tips? Thank you.

MacBook Air 2020 running at 100 degrees Celsius on google meet

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:31 AM PDT

I have an 8gb i5 2020 MacBook Air, and it gets extremely hot and EXTREMELY lout every time I use google meet for classes, to the point where people can only hear the fan and not my voice and the computer is uncomfortable to touch. I tried disabling turbo boost with "turbo boost switcher" and switching to safari instead of chrome, but the laptop is still unusable for calls which my iPhone 7 (a goddamn phone) can run easily. Am I missing out something? What the hell is happening

Macbook 12" - the biggest Apple fail of all the time?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 08:38 AM PDT

Hi, I was a biggest fan of Apple and it's ecosystem. I have macbook pro 13 mid 2012 and it is still works without any problems. So we decided to buy macbook 12, because it looked neat and without any moving parts. And we thought what could go wrong with this macbook. How we were wrong about our statement...

We have a Macbook 12" early 2015. No liquid damage and has never been dropped or abused. Looks like new!

Like pretty much every Macbook 12 user, we have the same problem - Logic board.

    Signs:

Last week it started regularly to reboot 2 - 3 times a day. We didn't understand what is happening and it showed the black side, it just after reboot showed legendary sign: Folder with question mark.

OK so we let it cool off for about 2 hours. And turned on again, yay it booted! We immediately backed - up, 140 Gb / 1 hour it looks like ssd works just fine.

After backup I started to analyse what cause this issue. Like we saw at startup a "Folder with question mark" I looked at disk utility to see for SMART status, but there wasn't any SMART status field.

I tried SMC, NVRAM reset, nothing helped... I then ran an Apple diagnostic tool, when you press and hold "D" on startup. I was running a diagnostic without power cable and it showed problem, that we need to change battery because it couldn't check power adapter. Ok then I tried again to run a test but with power cable on, and VoilĂ  it showed that this Macbook has no issues!

Ok so through internet recovery, I erased SSD and installed fresh Catalina. Wow I see on disk utility, Smart status: verified. So it means our SSD has no issue. So we though that all issues gone and it needed to reinstall freshly new mac os x version because we weren't install when we bought at 2015.

After 10 min of using it rebooted... ok ... damn ... again ...

So what I noticed, that sometimes it wont start without a power cable and it shows "Folder with question mark", but when you plugin the power cable it boot ups. But then it reboots etc... same story...

When I started to call to the Apple dealer and they said that it likely logic board is failing and will need to replace it. Then I made a call to several local Apple services and they told me the same, and they told me for temporary using like make a backup they could warm a CPU, but this is just a temporary fix... and they are not recommending to do it, so do we... as we were lucky to make a backup. By the way local Apple services noticed that they got 4 macbooks 12 in one month with the same issue. Because my country population is only 3 mln people, it means a lot...

Oh and yes I am not surprised that Apple has discontinued this model...

GUYS please tell me why there is no APPLE recall? We as users are not guilty if Apple engineers are wrong. They must to fix or give the money back!

By the way it seems Apple silicon valley are going to sell again macbook 12 but with their ARM architeture which will be super duper and without any issues.

Is there any hope that when they will release new macbook 12 with ARM CPU, they will recall or open a program to fix these old macbooks?

    Let's discuss!

Thank you for reading my post.

Do Apple MacBooks deteriorate within a few years like other apple products?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 04:04 AM PDT

So, I have two iPhones, an Apple Watch and an iPad, all of which I use daily. I'm looking to purchase a new laptop and am obviously considering a MacBook.

Now, my biggest concern is that I will shell out a huge chunk of change and then within 3 years the product will be compromised or unusable. I find that the phones are not great after two years and my first iPad became unusable after around 4 years (internet would not load pictures, apps would open etc).

I'm not expecting it to last forever, but I also don't want to replace it every 2-3 years. What is your experience of the lifespan and deterioration?

    Thanks in advance.
