Dish Network is sitting on a bunch of wireless spectrum, I wish Apple would buy it from them and build their own network

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 03:22 PM PDT

See: DOJ's plan to make Dish the fourth major carrier has a fatal flaw.

In my head you shouldn't have to pay at least $10 extra a month to use a cellular Apple Watch.

    Consider Phil Schiller's 2015 statements:

Schiller, in fact, has a grand philosophical theory of the Apple product line that puts all products on a continuum. Ideally, you should be using the smallest possible gadget to do as much as possible before going to the next largest gizmo in line.

"They are all computers," he says. "Each one is offering computers something unique and each is made with a simple form that is pretty eternal. The job of the watch is to do more and more things on your wrist so that you don't need to pick up your phone as often.

At least psychologically in my opinion this is currently reversed. The thought is more "what situations can I use my watch in that will justify the addition cost to my plan".

When really you should be thinking "do I even really need an iPhone?" It should be Apple's job to make that answer yes, not the structure of our cellphone plans.

Apple is apparently gearing up to launch their own modems. When they do I figure they might decide they're able to make all watch models cellular. Obviously there would be synergy here.

GoogleFi is interesting but the plan structure still looks far too complicated to me. I figure Google is limited in what they're able to do there by being an MVNO.

Even if Apple's venture here ends up stalling out like Google Fiber, perhaps like Google Fiber the mere threat of competition will be a competitive spur to wireless providers (but hopefully they don't feel the need to redline their wireless coverage the way Google apparently did with Fiber).

Apple is expected to be launching AR Glasses by 2022, will those also indefinitely require a usage tax?

Another consideration: Apple's future car competitor's CEO is launching a LEO satellite internet service whose receivers could be added to the roof of future Teslas. Apple themselves is rumored to have a secret team working on data satellites. I don't know what exactly they're thinking of using them for, but buying the spectrum from Dish could be a complement to it and better help them compete with Tesla and others.

I can obviously think of arguments against: Apple already appears to be hugely successful with the watch, it's against their interest if people use or upgrade their iPhones less or abandon them entirely, it's risky and they need to focus, they don't want to piss off carriers, and maybe something will change without their involvement.

There may be others, I don't know, my preferred objection is that the government not Apple should purchase the spectrum and build a public option wireless network, but obviously, as you can imagine, there would probably be more not less objections under such a proposal.
