    Preview is really nice

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:58 PM PDT

Not sure if this is a Big Sur thing or whether it was implemented in earlier versions, but I recently updated and noticed that:

    1. Preview handles externally added annotations, and
    2. it automatically refreshes on changes (great for LaTeX stuff).

I used to have THREE readers (Preview for general use, Foxit for annotations, Skim for automatic refresh) and now Preview does it all.

    Good job Apple!

    Macbooks are perfect students!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:22 PM PDT

I have been thinking about this for quite a while. Like people blame macbooks because they are expensive. But here I am telling that they are perfect for students. Let me explain why?

Macbooks has all the tools a students needs built in.

    Keynote : For Presentation

    Pages : For word documents

    Numbers : For Spreadsheets

Preview: as a all viewing program

All these Microsoft office alternatives for free. Also there's more. You don't have to deal with shitty windows update everytime because mac os is really good at crap management.

With student program you will get upto 200$ discounts and free app bundle too. Also free apple music and apple tv+ subscription. Like all that together makes up for the price. A perfect notebook for students.

Macbook pro late 2011 slows down with external monitor

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 01:17 AM PDT

    Hey there,

I've just bought the lg gl850, which is 27' 1440p monitor and I'm having some issues when plugging it with my mb pro.

The macbook pro starts to run very slowly (unusable), with resulting in no image on the external monitor.

Previously I had a very old samsung monitor, 1680 x 1050, hooked via mini dp adapter -> hdmi to dvi cable, working so smoothly!

For the records, I'm using the same mini-dp adapter, but with hdmi - hdmi cable, btw I don't think this is the culprit.

My macbook pro is very old, as you read, 13' i5 with 8 gigs of ram.

I've read so many people having the same issue, but it seems that's no real solution.

    Thanks guys!

I found this when scrolling the iPad Air product page on the Apple website. Not sure if it was updated, but if not, was Apple dropping hints at future naming schemes?

What happened to my SSD memory after updating to Catalina?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 12:56 AM PDT

Hey, sorry if this is a novice question!

I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro and updated from Mojave to Catalina (I think this was a mistake for a number of reasons and am going to revert it tomorrow if I can).

Before the update it said I had 1TB of total space on my Mac. Now it's saying total space is 750.1GB. I'm really bad with computers, but I'm guessing this is because of applications Catalina forces you to have like Apple TV or something like that?

Will it go back to normal when I revert it? Again, sorry if this is a stupid question but I am horrible with computers! Thanks in advanced!

    Add subtitles to home-made movies?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I have some homemade skits/films that I want to add subtitles to. I want these as a separate text file (.srt?), not as an image burned into the original video. I don't want to pay $300 for Final Cut Pro X just for this one purpose. I searched for this but only find apps that add pre-made subtitles to a major box-office movie. Surely there is an app that does this?!

Time Machine Backups Slow But Anything Else Isn't?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:31 PM PDT

I got a new NVMe SSD to use as external storage for my MacBook Pro (Big Sur beta 5) recently, with an enclosure that allows for read and write speeds around 800-900 megabytes per second. It's fast enough for what I need, like booting another version of macOS off of it.

However, I noticed one peculiar problem. I have a partition for backups (yes I know, not the best idea, but it's what I have) and backups take much longer. I have a running backup of a total of 14.65 GB and after a few hours, it's only done with 5 GB.

Is this a problem with the filesystem on the backups partition? Running disk speed tests and booting macOS on the other partitions are much faster than this.

Help me delete files and folders off iCloud please! I AM DESPERATE

Help me delete files and folders off iCloud please! I AM DESPERATE

I bet you think I am an idiot lol.

Anyways, there are hidden folders for apps that have long been deleted in my iCloud folder on macOS. When I click "send to trash", nothing happens. I used terminal to view folders and files in my iCloud folder and I was shocked to see A LOT of folders for apps that are long gone off my phone.

There are three 3 different way those folders are named:

    57T9237FN3~net~whatsapp~WhatsApp

    com~apple~Automator

    iCloud~com~flixel~cinemagraphpro

I am more concerned about deleting the fist and last types.

I tried rm, rmdir and rm -rf, rmdir -rf I even tried them with sudo.

When I try to delete a dir, it tells me it is not empty, I go inside and there is a folder called Documents. I delete it and go back to deleted the main folder/dir and here we go again "It is not empty." That's why I tried rmdir -rf. It just runs. does not return errors or anything. However, the folder/dir is not deleted. It is still there!

Any idea what to do here? Those apps are no longer on my iPhone and I checked my iCloud settings. they are not within the new or old backups.

How can I make the disk encryption password be different from the user password?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 09:27 PM PDT

I boot from a Catalina installation USB. I reformat the drive in Disk Utility as an encrypted volume, no problem. Then as soon as I create a user account in the installation process, it adds a decryption key and the user password can then decrypt the drive. I want to stop it from doing that and only use the password I made in Disk Utility to decrypt the drive.

In other words, I want to have a very long secure pass phrase to encrypt the disk but a shorter password for my user. I don't share the device with anyone untrustworthy, it is powered off when unattended. I just don't want to be typing a stupidly long password every time I use sudo or unlock the screen.

Catalina external display issue: Cursor becomes offset from what is displayed

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:06 PM PDT

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with an unusual display error I am having.

This video captures screen recording as well as a video of the actual monitor side by side: https://youtu.be/J5pptPC7Nh4

I have a multi-monitor setup composed of a 16' Macbook Pro 2019, and two 4K Dell p2715q monitors. One of these monitors is vertical. There appears to be a region on the vertical monitor where the cursor becomes offset from what it is actually clicking. All monitors have been reset to their default settings, and this issue occurs at multiple scaling levels and on all applications. Both monitors are plugged into a CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt Dock via DisplayPort. The issue does not occur on the other landscape monitor and it persists across restarts.

Any ideas of what I might do to fix this? It's been driving me crazy.

Computer freezes and Trackpad is literally stuck

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:56 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've suddenly been having a really odd problem. My Macbook Pro (2018) Catalina 10.15.16, has been freezing - the screen is completely stuck, there's no response to any keys or touchbar. The other very odd thing is that when the computer freezes, the trackpad feels literally stuck. Normally even when the computer is off, you can gently press down on the trackpad and feel a small click. But when the screen freezes, I can't press on the trackpad at all, there is no click and no physical movement of the trackpad, like the trackpad is glued down type of feeling.

I've reset SMC and updated the Catalina, I've run hardware diagnostics as well. Downloaded avast and ran a test.

I've also been having a problem with appstoreagent taking up way too much CPU >100 (sometimes 200%). I don't know if these problems are related but it was feels very weird. I'm not sure what is going on, the computer was brand new from last year, and these problem are popping up out of no where and ANY advice/help is greatly appreciated!

    Rsync

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:22 PM PDT

So I'm trying to emulate the robocopy source dest /mir command from Windows on my Mac.

Used rsync -avu source dest --delete but it's WAY slower than the robocopy command on Windows.

Doesn't seem like it's just comparing. Is rsync actually overwriting the destination files?

Running just rsync -avu source dest went rather quickly, but didn't remove items not found in source...

Will I run into issues if I factory reset a Mac with an Apple ID still bound to it?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:13 PM PDT

Backstory: friend's dad passed away some time ago and they got power of attorney to cancel a bunch of Apple stuff but his account still seems bound to the computer and it's basically locked out now.

Just wanted to check coming from a PC environment, if I factory reset the Mac will it run into any further issues? I know I've heard for iPhones you can't factory reset without the AppleID so I wanted to confirm I wasn't wiping it for nothing.

    https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201065

Apple's own support page seems to imply that more is needed but I don't know if that's just more of a CYA.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Alternative ways to install and/or run Windows besides BootCamp?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:38 PM PDT

Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody has a good alternative to installing and/or running Windows through BootCamp in order to run Windows-based software? I have about 35 gb of space left on my 256 gb internal drive and therefore cannot partition and install Windows via BootCamp because I'll have too little space left to actually install 20 gb worth of Windows software (and also BootCamp won't physically let me proceed without 40 gb of free disk space).

    My specs are as follows:

2015 Macbook Pro 13" Retina Display, Intel i5, 8gb RAM, 256gb internal drive, 1TB external SSD, running MacOS High Sierra.

If there is a way to install or run Windows and related programs off my external drive I'll be glad to try that instead, but I might be talking nonsense there. I'm a beginner at best at this stuff so bear with me.

Also, if you'd like to know, the rest of that 256 gb internal storage is taken up mostly by Logic Pro and related content, as well as some other apps that require to be installed on the OS installation disk. Furthermore, I don't doubt that there's a lot of useless files spread around my macbook but I've tried every (supposedly easy) method of cleaning up and none of them did much.

Why menu bar is still a “thing”?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 12:13 AM PDT

Do we really need it? Almost all developers putting their menus in their apps(like chrome, spotify etc.) I do not know the past but at this moment I belive we don't need it. It just takes my space. I know I can hide it but when I do that I can't see the wifi, time etc. They need to be moved to other place to hide that menu. I believe windows's approach is way better than macos. It just handles everything with one bar. Big sur is a big release, Apple could do this but they didn't. I'd like to listen their opinions for menu bar.

    Slow Loading Times on Zoom

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:49 PM PDT

I recently upgraded to Mac Catalina and ever since, the average time to join a meeting has gone from 5 seconds to 60. Same goes for breakout rooms, it takes up to a minute to join and come back, whereas it was super fast before.

Anybody have any fixes or idea why this has been caused?

    Help needed!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:32 PM PDT

I think Big Sur broke my 2017 iMac.

I have been using Big Sur since the 1st public beta with zero problems. 2 nights ago however, I left my mac on overnight, locked, and then next morning the message 'your computer restarted because of a problem' was displayed. I have not since been able to boot my Mac normally. I was able to boot in safe mode once, and I checked the activity monitor for any problems with CPU ect and there was nothing irregular. Since this one time, I have not been able to boot into safe mode.

I have tried it in recovery mode: first aid on all of my disks, I've tried re-installing macOS Catalina, and when I try my MnK won't work on the setup menu. I even tried with Sierra, with no luck - information on the recovery server is damaged. I have no backups to load, but since I had no real important data on it I decided to erase the disks and try again, and it still won't boot.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated :)
