Install Mojave APFS on existing Catalina?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 04:35 PM PDT

Is it possible to install Mojave on a second APFS, with Catalina already the primary OS?

Creating the new APFS was trivial but Googling has only shown how to add Catalina to an existing Mojave installation. MacOS Recovery doesn't give an option for going back (to Mojave).

Maybe via a bootable installer of Mojave? But will that method wipe-out Catalina+?

    Print in greyscale

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 12:04 AM PDT

    Hi

I have a mass of documents to print that won't need good quality. I've tried setting the quality to 'Draft' bu black still appears to be a bit too black. Is there a way to force printing in greyscale to save some toner? My 'Media and Quality' tab offers very few options: https://imgur.com/0gdKpeN

    Thanks

Running MacOS from external SSD ?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:13 PM PDT

I have the 2014 iMac and opening it up requires me to unglue the screen and its too much work for a computer I barely use. Can I buy a Samsung SSD and connect it via USB 3.0 to SATA to achieve faster speeds than my current 5400 RPM HDD? (I would be running MacOS from the external HDD)

Mojave HD Trouble Shooting (System Storage)

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:47 PM PDT

Hello all, I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I've been trouble shooting for nearly four hours but haven't found a solution.

Screenshots for reference are here: https://imgur.com/a/tqZULNS

My MacBook Pro's HD shows 164gb of data being taken up by "system" when checked via the "about my mac" tab as well as DaisyDisk (paid version/scanned as administrator). However, when scanning with OmniDesk, it shows that I'm only using about 65gb of space total on the HD. This is confirmed by the time machine back up I just did today at ~65gb. It's worth noting that I granted each program full access to scan my disk and went through and deleted any outrageously large files/caches/logs.

I've already attempted the following: reindexing spotlight, checking common hidden storage from iTunes & mail logs, restart, restart in safe mode, first aid via disk utility, first aid via disk utility in recovery mode, and a clean install of Mojave.

Please note that the problem isn't time machine backups/snapshots. This was my first time ever performing a time machine backup (I did it to an external drive as a safety precaution before going into recovery mode). Plus, I ran that terminal code to check beforehand and sure enough there was nothing to clean up.

I'm really hoping someone who has experienced the same issue can share a solution or point me in the right direction. If the only solution is to completely wipe my HD, so be it but I want to be 100% sure that will fix the issue before going through all that trouble. Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer.

When did Apple fix Catalina's MIDI problems?

More importantly, is anyone having problems with behringer analog to digital audio USB devices since MIDI got fixed?

Password protecting a pages document secure?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:49 PM PDT

I was wondering how secure a pages file is if I password protect it with a random 30+ char password. I want to put some personal info in the file and then upload it to my PW manager. I just want to make sure if I did that the built in password Security isn't a joke for pages. Thanks.

Can I receive Whatsapp (or other app) notifications even when the app is closed?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:30 AM PDT

So I use iMessage and the Whatsapp Mac app all the time on my Mac, I love not having to pull my phone out to reply when I'm working.

iMessage is perfect because even if the app isn't open (i.e. I've quit it), it still sends me a notification of a new message.

Whatsapp doesn't do this. I have to have the app open to get notifications. Is there a way to make it function like iMessage? I'd love it if so.

I tried always having the app open, but that just bugged my OCD seeing the dot under the app icon all the time. So I tried turning the dots off, but that bugged me even more as then I didn't know what apps were open! So I'm really hoping there's another way.

How can I stop the "you're running low on iCloud storage" notifications? I don't want to buy anything.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 04:26 PM PDT

I'm getting e-mails about this and I have random little pop-ups and messages all over my OS telling me I'm low on storage.I'm contemplating just disabling iCloud altogether. I will back up the stuff I really need.

How can I stop the madness?

Backblaze and similar services not necessary for a small hdd? Upload full disk dmg to cloud services easier?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:14 PM PDT

I understand the usefulness and convenience of a site like backblaze, but if I wanted an offline backup and my drive is under 100gb, would it make sense to just make an encrypted full disk dmg image of my main drive every once in a while and put on something like google drive which is a couple bucks a month for 100 gigs storage?

In case local backups aren't working (unlikely) I could use another computer to grab the file onto a thumb drive, and restore the image from disk utility recovery and it should work?

Could the usb with the dmg be ntfs or exfat coming from windows, or would it have to be hfs+ or apfs for disk util to see it?

I'm trying to use file sharing between my Mac and a PC. Even though I only chose one folder, the Mac is sharing everything.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:49 PM PDT

I'm trying to share a single folder on the network. Even though I only pick that one folder in Sharing settings, it's also sharing my home folder even though the home folder isn't in the "Shared Folders" section. How can I stop sharing the home folder and only share that one folder?

How do you manage your personal photo library?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:49 PM PDT

Just curious how r/MacOS does it? I have a decent size personal photo library that is very important to me. After upgrading to Catalina, having it unable to sync with my phone (I keep originals on my device and computer) via cable, and then unable to sync via iCloud, causing what appears to be a corrupted photos library (which I opened package contents and was able to pull photos out manually), I have become aware of the possibility of losing my photos more now than ever. I have NEVER worried about it until Catalina/iOS13, it's always just "worked" without issue, but these are scanned family photos, baby pictures, etc.

1). Assuming you care about your photos do you use iCloud to keep them in sync between devices? While I like iCloud, and trust apple more than any other "big company", it syncs/pulls/pushes them when it feels like it, which concerns me, if that makes sense? Perhaps it's not as random as I thought, but it seemed like occasionally, it would go days without doing it. I am TOTALLY fine with plugging my phone in and syncing them the old way, but that has not worked since Catalina/iOS 13 for me.

2). Do you use time machine to backup the originals you keep on your computer?

3). Do you use or do something different than the above that makes you more confident in not losing them?

I know it may seem silly, but I want to ensure I do not have loss/corruption, so want to do it right. Thanks in advance for any insight!

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I can't figure out what is causing this. It happens mostly with the Mail app. I will open it and it will just minimize itsself straight to the dock. Any ideas what's happening here?
