Almost 10 years Android user, finally switched over to an iPhone 11 Pro.

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 12:02 PM PDT

I love Android and I love iOS. My reason for switching was that I just wanted some change after being on Android since Galaxy S3.

I've been a Samsung user since iPhone 3Gs. Used to be Samsung Note exclusive until Note 7 blew up and messed up my upgrade cycle to the Galaxy line up. My last phone was S10+ and S10e before I bought the iPhone 11 Pro few days ago.

I used to be really into big screens, Always got the bigger screen version of the latest Samsung flagship phone. Until one day the S10+ felt super big. In that moment, I suddenly wanted a smaller phone, so I got the S10e. S10e is a phenomenal phone and IMO it is a better deal than the pixel 4a, (if anyone is looking to switch over to Android on a budget phone).

Like I said, the reason I switched over was I just wanted to try out the iPhone again. I have no issues with Android. I knew that Apple is restrictive with iOS, and they want you to experience iOS, how they think you should experience it. Which is fine to me. The trade off is "everything just work" and more polished apps compared to Android.

The transfer process from Android to iOS is very frustrating and hard. The "move to iOS" app was only able to copy over my contacts. It messed up the timestamp on my messages and timestamped every message with the time they were transferred over to iOS. I had to delete all this and transfer them using a third party app.

I also had to get a third party app to transfer my WhatsApp messages from Android to iOS. Android WhatsApp messages are backed up to Google drive and iOS messages are backed up to iCloud. There is no way to transfer these without a paid third party app. Which I did and it worked.

So far the experience hasn't been too bad. Apple has introduced some Android features, especially the widgets with iOS 14.

Here are some of the Android/Samsung features I miss And Some stuff I need clarification/help on.

    • Always on Display. Why hasn't apple introduced this yet? They have OLED screens now, this should be a no-brainer.

    • Swipe down from middle of the screen to open up the notification. I think this might be a Samsung feature. The 11 Pro is still kind of a large phone so instead of having to reach all the way to the top to bring down notification they should do it with swipe down from anywhere on the screen.

    • Ability to turn off "Spotlight/Search" with swipe up. I don't see myself using this, I didn't use the search on Android either.

    • Ability to turn off Widgets screen. I like to use my widgets inline with the icons. (overtime I'm sure I'll get used to this) I really miss having having my Calendar on my home screen. Here is a a picture. https://i.imgur.com/oImH1HK.jpg Does iOS have anything similar? Where I can see month view along with little blurbs on each day?

    • Another widget I miss is the Samsung Notes. Here is another picture: https://i.imgur.com/UEc919w.jpg To be able to view notes and be able to scroll on the home screen, without opening the app.

    • Fingerprint Sensor. Face ID is ok too. I really liked the power button fingerprint sensor on my S10e more than the in screen sensor on the S10+. I hope they introduce touch ID with the iPhone 12.

    • Gboard keyboard with a lot of empty space below the keyboard. Screenshot here: https://i.imgur.com/xcWV8gW.jpg And is it not possible to get the number row above?

    • All the photos from different sources like WhatsApp, messenger, camera roll etc... end up in one folder. Another thing to get used to was the recent images appearing at the bottom, instead of the top in the photos app. Minor thing.

    • On the notifications Swiping left, gets rid of them on Android, whereas on iOS it asks me if I want to view them, manage them or clear them. One thing I have realized is that Android is years ahead on notifications than iOS.

    • Airdrop? Pushbullet? Nearby sharing? What are my options? Does airdrop work with windows/chrome? Should I reinstall pushbullet? The ability to right click on an image in chrome on Windows and sending that picture to my phone in a second is really awesome. or sending an image from my phone to chrome via pushbullet. I haven't used Airdrop yet, but I heard everyone loves it.

    • I was really looking forward to downloading Dark Sky after apple bought it, but turns out it isn't available in Canada.

    • I miss sideloading apps. I can't install hulu in Canada. I used to have it sideloaded on my Android and used VPN to watch Hulu all the time.

Overall I like the iPhone so far. I get that I can't get everything I had on Android, Its a completely different system and I'm sure I'll get used to the iOS. I already had people recognizing that I had gotten an iPhone with iMessages. I guess my messages turned from green to blue.

If the iPhone 12 has some great features I might pre-order it at release, but if its just a spec bump then I'll probably keep the 11 Pro for another year.
