Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:02 PM PDT (Basics at the bottom, I'm leaving the first paragraph in because I needed to vent and it may provide context) I have a Macbook pro for my work and they gave me an OWC thunderbolt dock and 2 1080p monitors to use at my desk and then to borrow for my work from home. The dock was adapting both thunderbolt and mini displayport to DVI for the two monitors. I'm now trying to upgrade to my own monitors that are 2K, they only have HDMI ports on them so I got adapters but they were only adapting to 1080p on the new monitor. I got a my own dock that supported two 2K displays but it requires a the displaylink device manager to actually function. I can't install it on my work laptop but I also have a personal Macbook, also 2019 that I've been testing everything on. I found that the displaylink driver causes weird extra issues with Catalina where it thinks the driver is constantly recording my screen, making it so the apple watch login doesn't work, which is a little annoying. I can work around it but I'd like to work if possible. Are there any docks out there that support the resolutions I'm trying to achieve but without the need for extra software? Thanks for any help! Basically, if I use a Displaylink device, I need to install the software on my work computer, which I don't want to have to ask about and possibly get rejected anyways, and also I can't unlock my personal laptop with my watch. I've identified 3 possible solutions:

MacBook Pro 16" graphics card Intel UHD vs Radeon question Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:26 PM PDT I just bought an Amazon refurbished 16" 2019 MBP for under 2k USD. It seems to be in good condition but I noticed that it has integrated Intel UHD 630 Graphics. For a few hundred more I could get a refurb from Apple with the Radeon graphics. I don't play video games at all, or do video work. I write code, read the web, and watch videos on my computer. My subjective experience of my computer and it's snappiness is very important to me though, because I use it so much. Do you think the graphics card makes any difference to me? Like, I could see the value ina 120hz display if there was one for buttery smooth scrolling. Would I "feel" the difference doing normal productivity work with upgraded graphics? EDIT: Doh, I guess these MBP have two graphics chips. Mine also has AMD Radeon Pro 5300M. I think it uses Integrated until there is a reason to switch. Thanks, -Kevin [link] [comments]

How do you clean your MacBook keys and trackpad without it turning on? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:29 AM PDT The new MacBooks turn on when any button is pressed. I like to go over my keyboard & trakpad with a microfiber to remove oil, it seems to always turn on the computer and activate the keys. Does anyone know of a way to clean it without every key being activated? [link] [comments]
2015 MacBook Pro vs 2019 MacBook Air (both 13”) Posted: 23 Sep 2020 07:00 PM PDT Hi everyone. New to the MacBook environment, so please forgive me if I'm asking something obvious. I got a new job and they're giving me a MacBook for work. They are asking me to choose between a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina 13" and a 2019 MacBook Air 13". At first the choice was kind of obvious to me, "go with the newer one"... but some people have told me I should also ponder the Pro vs Air fact so I'd like to get more input. What are your opinions? What would you choose between the two? [link] [comments]
MBP 16" - is the base model enough? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:58 AM PDT Hi Guys, we recently started a Youtube/Podcast series and now we have all the footage and wanted to start editing. my current PC can't render any files so its impossible to work on it and i have to get a new one - preferibly an iMac or a MBP 16" (portability is semi-important but would be nice, so i can edit on the go and use the macbook for school related stuff) What do i do: - Youtube/Vimeo Videos around 1-2 hours (1080p/30FPS), color correction and some simple effects. - Podcast Audio editing - Light Photo editing. Since i can't find any decent answers on the web i'm asking you guys - should i take the base 16" model (€ 2.484) or upgrade it with the better graphics card (AMD 5500 4GB) and 32 Gb of Ram for a total of € ~3.000. but maybe this config is an overkill. maybe you guys have a better configuration for my needs? thanks in advance and have a great week! . Macbook Pro Mid 2014 Trackpad not working Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:54 PM PDT Hey all, Has anyone else had this problem and been able to fix? Through looking elsewhere online I've learned this is a pretty common problem for this model, and most seem to say a cable needs replaced. However, this happened to me about a year ago, and I was strangely able to fix it by booting the Macbook in safe mode and then restarting. Worked perfect for months, but now its happening again and the same fix didn't work. Anyone have this issue and was able to solve it? The apple store said it could be replaced for a few hundred bucks and I don't want to do that. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Keyboard replacement program for refurbished MBP Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:29 PM PDT I'm looking at a refurbished 2019 MBP from MicroCenter, which is an Apple authorized reseller. Macbook Pro Mid 2014 - better with Windows 10 ? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:59 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2014. The i5 model, with 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD. Although I have had Windows 10 installed on and off I never paid much attentioen between the following thing: since MacOS Catalina update I've noticed a difference in how smooth the OS is generally. Let me explain: very often the Mission Control animation is choppy, sometimes opening apps take quite some time, scrolling in the Whatsapp desktop app is chopyy, scrolling on Websites (Safari is a bit better but depending on the website sometimes it's really choppy - MS Edge / Chrome / Firefox even with smooth scrolling add-ons is still noticeably choppy). So in summary a general I might say that the overall animation has gotten worse. Now here comes the question part: I reinstalled recenlty Windows 10 because I had some things that I could not do them on MacOS. Anyways, all is good and then it hit me. Overall Windows 10 is much more fluent in animations than MacOS Catalina on the same machine. When I go to task view the animation is smooth. Scrolling in MS Edge is even smoother that in Safarai / MacOS. Not to mention: resizing windows is much smoother (although here I read some articles confirming that it's because on how often the MacOS Window Manager refreshes the content. Windows does it less often -> therefore animation is smoother). Can anybody else with an older MacBook and Windows 10 installed can confirm if they have the same experience ? [link] [comments]

Which monitor should I choose? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:56 AM PDT I'm looking for a monitor to my macbook pro. I've got the 2018 13-inch macbook pro, and I've been looking at either the Dell U2720Q and the Samsung Odyssey G9 49" (there's about 120€ price difference in my country). Do you guys have a suggestion which one I should go for, or should I look at other alternatives? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Will my repair still be covered? Posted: 23 Sep 2020 06:58 AM PDT I have the MacBook Pro 2016 13in with the backlight flexgate problem (I'm pretty sure anyways since the backlight went out). I have a small crack in the bottom of the screen near the hinge on the material that says 'MacBook pro'. This has been there for a while and to my knowledge this has NOTHING to do with the backlight as the backlight is a common repair for this model. Will Apple still fox my repair for free even if there is this unrelated damage? [link] [comments] |
