2020 MacBook Air disconnects from WiFi

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:21 PM PDT

I've tried a few fixes that I have seen in YouTube videos, but my WiFi drops every 2-3 min. Does anyone know if there's a legit fix for this?

Should I finally update macOS Mojave 10.14.6 to Catalina?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:24 PM PDT

I have an early 2015 MBP, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 gb RAM, and about 106 gb of free space (250 gb HD). Yup, I'm definitely going to start saving up for a new MBP in the future with the 1TB HD because I want it all in one place.

I've held back on updating because I'll miss iTunes, but I've stopped using it to backup my phone/ipad because of the little space I have left on my HD. I am thinking of finally upgrading to Catalina because I want to download Goodnotes app onto my MBP instead of sharing my screen during my Teams meetings (yay, remote learning).

Other uses are document editing, web surfing, listening to music, and storing my large library of photos.

    Any input appreciated!

Replacing a Macbook every 3 years

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:55 PM PDT

So Applecare+ covers only 3 years for each Macbook.

I heard many horror stories about Macbooks breaking after the warranty ending. Apple literally asks for a huge repair fee when the warranty ends. I am talking about modern Macs(post 2015 Macbook era).

German cars for example, have a horrible failure rate after the warranty ends. So people sell their cars when the warranty ends, and get a new car. I believe this also applies for laptops.

So I am thinking about replacing my Macbook every 3 years if for some reason I get a Macbook instead of a Windows laptop.

But the problem is, Korean computer stuff won't work well with an ARM Mac, since it cannot emulate x86 Windows. I would gladly purchase a Mac if Apple did not start their transition, but since Apple won't sell Intel Macs after 2 years, I would have no option but to switch to Windows after 3 years.

What the fuck should I do?

Fyi, I will move to USA after 4 years. I don't know if that helps. I will be majoring comp sci and I heard Docker won't work.

    2015 macbook pro fan issue

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:48 PM PDT

whenever I connect my 15inch 2015 pro to more than one monitor, the CPU temperature rises to more than 60 degreeC and the fan would not drop below 6000rpm. I wonder if I shall consider using a better thermal paste or I should not expect much improvement?

I brought this up cuz a lot of reviews mentioned only difference in temperature drop rather than fan speed. But those are focused on testing at full load, which is usually 90+ degree C. Any one know the data for ~60C?

New Retina 2012 MacBook Keep or Sell?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I just bought a 2012 retina MacBook 15 in 8gb 256gb i7 which I was planning on using for myself.

The guy I bought it off said it had barely been used. Turns out he was right. I powered it on and it will still running the original OS from 2012. It also only had 1 charge cycle. Comes with box and really is in perfect condition.

I was therefore wondering wether it had any value as a collectors item? I could sell it and buy another Mac for myself. Or should I just enjoy it and keep it myself?

    When to best buy one

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:27 PM PDT

So I've have a dilemma going on right now. I'm wanting to get a base model 13" MBP (£1299), but I'm wondering whether it might be best to wait until the Apple event in October to see what's shown off MacBook-wise.

    Many thanks

Trade in 2018 MBP for 2020 MBP?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:23 PM PDT

Is it worth upgrading my 2018 MBP (2.3 GHz i5, 8 GB Mem, 256GB SSD) for a new 2020 one? I'm thinking of upgrading to the 2020 MBP (2.3 GHz i7, 16 GB Mem, 512 GB SSD).

I have a $300 gift card and trading in my 2018 would likely get me $800-900, and with student discount and grants from the government, I'll be looking at only spending about $400.

Is it worth it? Would performance be any better at all? Even slightly?

I've been thinking of upgrading because I don't have AppleCare and I've been having issues with the screen (generally works well but occasionally the color stutters/changes randomly to being more "blue") and the keyboard (butterfly). And frankly, I don't appreciate the lack of physical ESC button since I use vim a lot for programming.

    Thanks, in advance!

    What MacBook Should I Get?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:20 PM PDT

Hey, I'm a current 1st-year business student looking to buy a laptop. I'm currently looking at a 13-inch MBP and a 16-inch. I'm also looking into possibly getting the 13 inches along with an iPad Pro 12.9. I'm mainly gonna use the device for school work, web browsing and some gaming. I also like to have a lot of tabs open usually.

As for models, I've been looking at the 4 port 13' with the 10th gen i5 but I don't know if that's even worth it in terms of longevity value when I can get a 16. Then for the 16-inch model, I'm a bit worried that it's gonna be overkill for my needs.

Can you guys give me some advice? Thank you!!

What would it take to upgrade the SSD in my 2016 Macbook Air?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:16 PM PDT

I can't seem to find a straight forward answer on this. Do I have to use a proprietary SSD? Or can any M.2 Work? I've seen some sites that claim there are connectors you can buy, will this work?

Cautionary Tale: *DO NOT* buy an external HD by WD (Western Digital) + ALWAYS do an additional backup to a cloud service

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:02 PM PDT

Forgive me for the wall of text, occasional cursing and overall discombobulation. I'm exhausted and pissed off:

About 2.5 years ago I bought a WD My Book with 3TB of storage; used it to create a Time Machine backup data from a Macbook Pro, and to store other larger files I have.

The hard drive itself is working fine. It gets detected on an old Macbook Pro running El Capitan.

However... trying to get it to even show up on a new Macbook Pro running Catalina? Nope. Nothing. And the WD customer service is absolutely f*cking useless. You get on a chat with one of them and they make you do all the things that any reasonably IT-savvy person would do before contacting support (i.e. I had already scoured through the FAQs and community support; had run disk utility making sure that external HD were also selected; had "turned it off and back on", etc). And they insist all you need to do is restart your Mac and that the drive will suddenly show up (of course it won't).

There's no firmware update for this hard drive, nothing. I told the customer service person that the problem is not the new mac (since it detects other external HD) and is not the WD hard drive either (since it's getting detected by the old mac). Honestly, I don't even put the blame on the agent, because it seems they're utterly not prepared to deal with this. It looks like it's hardware by WD that is simply not getting firmware updates to work with newer machines.

    And their site? Freaking atrocious.

I downloaded every single application from their site that might maybe fix the problem, but nothing.

From what I see there are other people experiencing the same problem, getting WD My Book to connect to Catalina; and WD is absolutely silent on this. F*ck them and the goddamn horse they rode on.

I'm just thankful I haven't sold my old machine; it looks like I'll have to cross-check which of the WD HD files are not yet backed up on the cloud service I use, and then download those files from the cloud to the new mac.

TL;DR: WD sucks; always do a second backup onto the cloud; and don't get rid of your old machine just yet...

    Transfering Photo Library

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I'm trying to change the harddrive on an older macbook but in order to do it I need to move everything off. I have an external drive which will hold everything until the time when I'll install the new drive and move everything onto that one, and I got most things off, but I cant get the photos off.

The macbook has a 30GB photo library which I dragged to my external drive, but it seems to take ages and very little progress being made, it claims it'll take a few hours, but who knows how long it might actually take.

I've also tried opening Photos, going to All Photos, pressing command + A and then dragging over everything to the harddrive that way, but not sure if that would work. I've transferred over 20gb of other files just fine, none taking more than a few mins to this drive from documents, movies, audio and other folders just fine, but this one is giving trouble. Is there an easier way to transfer them over to the new drive?

    13 inch MBP 2020 i5 10th gen vs i7 10th gen thoughts after a couple of months?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:51 AM PDT

I've been reading for a while regarding this topic, however, everything I found was more than 4 months old information, a time when the new MBP was released.

After all that time, how's the 13 inch MBP with i5 10th gen compared to the one with i7 10th gen? Are there obvious differences in heat and battery life? Are there any benchmarks released regarding these metrics?

I'm still trying to figure out whether I should go with the i7 or stick with i5. I'm a software dev, I've been using i5 3rd gen 2.5GHz laptop and I think I can do my job just fine with the i5, but I want to future proof my laptop as much as I can and +180$ doesn't seem like much for that. However, I'm more concerned about the heat and the battery life, if there are obvious differences between the two laptops, I might go with the i5.

MacBook won't turn on at all

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:01 AM PDT

My gf has a MacBook that just stopped turning on overnight. She already called tech support but they couldn't help her as well. We already checked the power cables and if it maybe is the display only but it seems like everything else is working fine.

Does anybody have a solution for this problem?

    Any help would be appreciated!

how do i turn off touch bar on 2020 MacBook pro?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:09 AM PDT

and if i can't turn it off completely then how do i at least disable it??

someone said that i could disable it - meaning that i would no longer be able to adjust the volume on the mac- but this doesn't bother me

ALSO - is it enough to transport it around in a laptop sleeve? or should i also get a hard shell case for it? i really can't decide so suggestions are really appreciated. i read that cases can damage the alignment and also damage the finish of the mac - if particles get stuck between the case and the mac.. i don't really want to damage my mac. i am really careful with my laptops and part of me says a sleeve would be enough (at least for when it's in my backpack and stuff).. i have read about skins, but i am not really interested in these -- and they are not easily accessible to me. i haven't found a good place around where i live to buy them.. just not super into skins.. so it's going to be a hard shell case or just the laptop sleeve. other options?? right now, i am thinking i'll just keep it in the sleeve basically at all times; in class, it will be out bare on a desk, but i will be very careful with it i suppose...

basically, i don't think i feel comfortable with jamming a brand new $1,400 into a hard shell case - when i know it most likely will cause damage. i did have a case on my older mac but this was only after i had had it for like 5 years - so it wasn't brand new and didn't bother me as much.

    thanks in advance :)

27" iMac 2020 Review - Time to Buy an iMac!

15” MBP 2018 or New ARM MBP

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:38 AM PDT

I've come across a Apple refurbished 15"MBP with i7/16gb/256 for USD 1900. I don't want to stretch my budget any further but I dig the larger screen or the 13" MBP and it will def make the user experience better.

Is it worth getting this model despite it being 2 years old over a new ARM MBP? Apart from the keyboard this seems a viable option for increased screen real estate instead of having to spend another $600 for a 16".
