    New to MacOS, what to do about Big Sur?

    I have ordered my first ever Mac, a Macbook Pro 13 inch, 2020, base model. It's scheduled to arrive in a few weeks.

    I have never used MacOS before and Big Sur looks extremely nice. Should I directly upgrade to it and learn the MacOS there when my order arrives? Or is it still too buggy to use daily? My order probably will arrive in first week of September so are there any chance that the final release will be on September?

    Spotlight search showing duplicate/ghost Notes

    Mac Pro 5,1 running Catalina 10.15.6 (19G73). I just finished fixing an issue with Handoff, requiring me to sign out of iCloud on all Apple devices. I'm not sure when this Spotlight issue started, but all I know is that I just ran a Spotlight search, and I notice two Notes showing for each note:

    1. When I select the first note in the search results list, the Spotlight preview pane is completely blank; when I click it with Notes closed, it opens Notes, but goes to the first note in the list.
    2. When I select the second note in the search results list, the preview pane shows the correct note, and when I click it, it opens Notes and takes me directly to the correct note.

    Any thoughts as to why I'm seeing this? I know about the duplicate/ghost contact issue, and that's very easy to fix, but what about Notes?

    Can Mojave run apps updated to work on Catalina?

    Just curious... thinking to downgrade to Mojave, even though I'm used to running Catalina for better game support ( I can't run bootcamp cuz I'm working with 128gig storage )

    Hi,I have 2019 macbook pro 16' with macos catalina 10.15.6. When I try to download dependencies for my project

    go mod download

    I have an error: go: github.com/Masterminds/squirrel@v1.4.0: mkdir /User: read-only file system

    Path to my project folder: /Users/HERE_MY_USER_NAME/Documents/Projects/simple_project

    Can you help me ?

    2020 iMac vs 2019 MBP 16". Who gets the nod?

    I purchased a 16" MBP arriving on Tuesday, thinking about returning and getting the iMac.

    A bit torn...What would you guys go with?

    27" iMac

    • 3.6GHz 10-Core + 1TB storage + self upgrade 32GB Ram
    • $2,459.00 + $180 + $130 = $2,769.00.
    • Would be paired with LG 34" Curved Monitor.

    16" MBP

    • 2.4GHz 8-Core + 32GB Ram
    • $2,599.00 + $360 = $2959.00.
    • Would be paired with LG 34" Curved Monitor + 27" Thunderbolt display.

    Notes:

    • All prices education discount + pre tax.

    • I'm not too concerned about the ARM coming out. Feel like Apple's goal is to increase profitability and keep performance the same or less.
    • I don't travel too much for work, 99% of the time I'm in my office at home.

    Advantages of iMac:

    • 8GB of GDDR6 memory (not super valuable to me)
    • Comes with magic keyboard + mouse ($170 value)
    • Obviously larger screen (~$250 value or so)
    • Option to upgrade RAM if needed
    • Less Dongles

    Advantages of Macbook:

    • Portability, although not of huge importance to me
    • Maybe better resale value (more buyers?)
    • In my setup would have a nice extra screen

    On paper seems like a no brainer with the iMac, but what are your thoughts?

    Apps don't open when the network is down

    I've noticed my third party apps just bouncing on the dock and don't open when the network is down. But when I turned off the wifi, apps are opening fine. Wondering what's the issue.

    How to programatically set HTTP/HTTPS proxy?

    Hi guys,

    I sometimes turn my proxy on/off, but it kinda annoys me to have to click on network, then proxies, then select each http then https to turn them on.

    I'd rather popup terminal and run a command to toggle this. Is there a command for this so I can stick it in a .sh file?

    When I attempt to install Mac OS High Sierra, no hard drive option comes up. When I attempt to erase my SSD it says erase has failed. Any ideas? Or am I out of luck. Thanks guys

    Disclaimer: I'm somewhat new to Mac

    I hooked up my Mac to an external HDD to store photos on. This is an ExFAT HDD I share between Windows and MacOS. It has many gigabytes worth of photos on it from days long past.

    Today I imported the external HDD photos into the MacOS Photos program. Everything went fine and the import went through (ignoring some software annoyances like things not being exactly chronologically ordered).

    However, I was surprised to see that rather than just sourcing photos from the photos folder I had on the drive, MacOS seemed to create a copy of all of these photos inside of the Photos Library I had created on the drive.

    Is there a way to get MacOS' Photos program to display and organize photos that are on another drive, but NOT duplicate or copy them?

    Move Deleted User to Trash - Can't Empty

    I had my Macbook Pro (with OS X 10.15.6) repaired and when I got it back, I had to set it up as a new computer. Then I had to restore my data from a Time Machine backup. The Time Machine backup user was the same name as the new account that got created on the Macbook pro (because it's just my real name), and Migration Assistant moved the new user to a Deleted Users folder. I didn't want this taking up space, so I moved the user in Deleted Users to the trash. When I empty Trash, it says VoiceTrigger, Library, and "myusername" are in use, so I can't empty it. Any suggestions? Rebooting didn't work. Thank you

    Moving messages from Mac to Mac manually

    Hi all,

    I recently enabled iCloud sync for the first time in the hopes of getting the same messages on all devices. Unfortunately, that's failed. I can't seem to upload all of them from Device 1 (2014 iMac) to Device 2 (2020 iMac) and Device 3 (iPhone 11 Pro Max).

    I was wondering if there is a way to instead manually move the messages. So far I've tried:

    Copying / replacing ~/Library/Messages

    Copying / replacing ~/Library/Containers/apple.ichat/Library/Messages

    I've done this from both the most recent folders and also went back and did this from pre iCloud sync folders. In both cases when transferring them to the new iMac, I'm still only seeing messages from a certain window in time (dating back to 9.25.2018) which I believe is what is currently in iCloud sync.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    it works fine for a word. but the issue is:

    1. when i enter multiple word divided with space it does/searches noting.
    2. when i run it with a large page ducocuments with approximately 300 pages, it ends with 'AppleEvent timed out. number -1712' and RAM/disk full error. note, i have 32 gb ram and 40 gb remaining space on disk.

    I m totally beginner with zero knowledge of scripting. can anyone help with this?
