Can someone ELI5 the pros and cons of ARM based Macs?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:35 PM PDT

All I've seen on reddit about them so far is that they're 'unproven technology' and that you won't be able to use a lot of the software you use now. So what's the point in them? Would love an ELI5 pros and cons breakdown from someone smarter than myself.

AirPods keep waking MacBook Pro from sleep

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:57 PM PDT

I often use my AirPods with my MacBook pro. If I put the Mac to sleep and put the AirPods back in their case, all is well until I want to use the AirPods with another device, like my iPad for example. As soon as I take them out of the case and put them in my ears, my Mac wakes up from sleep. My MacBook Pro is connected to an external display, so when this happens at night, the whole room lights up.

I find this very annoying. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this? Ideally I don't want to disable the ability to wake my Mac via Bluetooth, as that would interfere with my use of external mouses and keyboards.

I'm using 1st gen AirPods with a mid 2015 15" MacBook Pro running the latest version of Catalina.

    Thanks in advance!

System Processes CPU usage spikes up when plugging my Time Machine hdd

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:26 AM PDT

I have a very weird problem, it seems that my macbook is freezing up to almost unusable whenever I run Time Machine backups.

I didnt have this problem before. But after I reinstalled Catalina this started happening.

I have a 1TB SSD and trying to Time Machine back up it to my 1TB HDD.

    Anyone had similar issues?

Change volume without using touch bar

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:06 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I just got a MacBook Pro with a touch bar and I don't really get used to it. I prefer having a physical way of changing the volume and the luminosity of the screen.

So I was wondering if it is possible to create a shortcut on the keyboard and using for example "control + arrow up/down" to change the volume or "control + arrow left/right" to control the luminosity, something like this.

Would anyone here know about that?

    Thanks in advance!

Macbook Pro mid 2012 format direct to Catalina

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:33 AM PDT

Hi, I am using a Macbook Pro mid 2012. Internet recovery which I use to reinstall the OS only allows me to install Mountain Lion and it takes two more upgrades to get to Catalina from there.

Is there a way I can reinstall my OS straight to Catalina?

A guide to charging your MacBook & preserving battery life

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I've seen a couple posts on here asking when to charge your MacBook and wondering if it's okay to use it while plugged in so I thought I'd put together this little guide.

    tl;dr at the bottom

    When to charge?

The battery degrades faster the more charging cycles it has. This is typical behaviour for LiIon (lithium-ion) batteries. To keep your cycles down, make sure to keep the MacBook plugged in as long as possible and only unplug it if you have to use it away from a power outlet.

    How long to charge?

While you can't overcharge the battery, it hurts the battery if the computer shuts down because of total power loss. This can also lead to data loss if the computer suddenly shuts down. This is very unlikely, but still possible.

    Don't discharge too much

As I already mentioned, total power loss can damage the battery. However, you shouldn't just plug it in at 1% but rather try to not let it drop below 15-20% too often, as this will shorten the lifespan of your battery. In case you do let it drop below that, don't worry! The important thing here is to not let this happen every day. For the first few cycles you should also try to avoid getting to this border even more

    Storing the MacBook/Battery

In case you know that you're not going to use your MacBook for an extended period of time and want to store it away, make sure the battery is at least about 50% charged.

    Usage while plugged in

If it's possible, use the MacBook while it's plugged in to the power outlet. As long as this is the case, your MacBook will draw it's power right from the power adapter, rather than using the battery to power everything. This concludes in fewer battery cycles, because its battery doesn't discharge, and therefore longer battery life. If you use it away from the wall and plug it back in to charge, don't be surprised if it charges slower above 80%. This is a feature Apple build in to MacOS to extend the lifespan of the battery by easing the electrical current. Sometimes, MacOS will tell you that it only charged something between 93% and 99/r/%. This behavior is normal and will help to prolong the overall life of the battery.

    Conclusion / TL;DR

Keep the MacBook plugged in as long as possible and never discharge it entirely. Make sure to keep it at 50% when storing it away and don't wonder if it "stops" charging somewhere between 93% and 99%. This is only to prolong battery health. As of now, I've never had any issues with using it this way but if somebody else has different experiences, please let me know!

I just thought of a cool QOL feature mac OS could have, unless this is already possible?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:22 PM PDT

To be able to have a hotkey that will teleport my cursor to a certain part on my desktop that I decide. This would be useful for people that have multiple monitors that are different sizes. Sometimes its a pain trying to find my cursor because a smaller monitor will take up a smaller portion of the 'digital wall' next to the larger one.

Anyways, if this is possible, can anyone let me know how to do this? PS, i know of the feature to shake the mouse and have it blow up, I tried it, didn't like it.

My mid 2012 MBP having "mini hangs"

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:33 PM PDT

Ok, so I have a MBP mid 2012 16gb RAM 1TB SSD (recently upgraded) 2.9 Ghz dual core i7 running on Catalina

I've had not experienced this before I upgraded to SSD (I was using a 1TB HDD). I am NOT sure if this problem is related to the upgrade at all, but since thats the major thing I did before this happened, I think its worth mentioning.

I reformatted the new SSD with mountan Lion, then upgrade to El Capitan, then to Catalina. Yhen I manually restored my filed from my Time Machine back up.

I temporarily diabled Spotlight search on all folders.

Now everytime I open a new window/tab in Chrome, or even switch from one app to another, 60% of the time I get this rainbow circle telling me that the OS "thinking or loading" something. This happens regardless if I do things online or offline (i.e. searching for files in Finder)

This is really annoying as I am not seeing anything weird except that when this happens, WindowServer process shoots up to 50-60% CPU usage. RAM usage is 50 to 55% , tbh, previously, I've had 80% RAM usage with no problems like this at all. (I am looking at this in Activity Monitor).

Any ideas where I should look at?

Other folder in Mac OS Catalina

Other folder in Mac OS Catalina

    Hi,

I'm wondering how to delete "other" volumes on Macbook pro (2020) after installing parallels.dmg (though its cracked version), there are huge chunk of other file folder appeared in storage section (11.23GB), which cannot be found and deleted.

I tried all solutions from Google (those omnisweeper/Mac cleaner/~Library folder etc), even I deleted everything (sign out iCloud) and re-installed OS Catalina in Recovery mode. It does not help, after fresh OS installation, it still shows!

Disk Utility -> no delete volumes available too.

    Any ideas to remove this?

    Help Choosing OS

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I'm a volunteer doing basic IT for an arts education non-profit. I updated the classroom computers to Catalina and I regret the decision as they began performing worse than when they were still on High Sierra. These issues persist even after a complete reformat and clean reinstall. After doing some research, my best guess is that the primary culprit is that Catalina formatting the HDD in AFPS, making OS/App load times and Finder tasks extremely slow. Most of these computers are Late-2015 iMac16,1 and can't be upgraded with an SSD (which would be outside the org's budget anyways).

So I'm thinking of rolling back to an earlier OS, but I'm not sure how far back I should go. Any suggestions or comments are welcome, thanks!

2020 MacBook Air USB - C External Drive Problem?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:11 PM PDT

Hey all! I just received my MacBook Air 2 days ago. (LONG time Mac user) I set it up, and while plugged into power, I hooked up my bus powered usb c external western digital drive. (We'll say power in the north port and usb c hard drive in the south port) Each time I go to transfer my 180gb photo library I get a pop up stating "USB C External has not been ejected properly" and the transfer stops. Here's the weird part, if I plug it in without being plugged into power...it transfers fine. Does the bus on the airs not have the ability to handle charging AND something else plugged in at the same time? I have never had this problem in 20 years of Mac usage so have no idea if my machine is faulty, if my drive is faulty, or if it's Catalina?

Rebinding Caps Lock to Forward Delete?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:51 PM PDT

Hi there, I notice that older versions of OSX could use an app called "Seil" to rebind keys but it no longer works on Catalina, does anyone have any other suggestions? I know I can use Fn+delete to use it but it would be really great since I never even use the Caps Lock Key.

Alternatively, I would love to bind the caps lock to delete and the delete key to forward delete but I feel like that would be harder.

    Thanks everyone!!!

Old 2013 iMac with a fusion drive... should I brave updating to Catalina?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:24 AM PDT

I've read several posts on here that make it sound like Catalina has finally reached a less problematic state. Honestly I think I'd rather be on High Sierra, since it's the last OS that supports my Nvidia, but it's very close to its end of life. Anyone have any thoughts? And if you hate Catalina, how's Mojave treated you?

I have 57 GB of “other” storage on my MacBook. How can I clean this up a bit?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:22 AM PDT

Basically the title. I've seen recommendations to clear caches but I also see things saying not to do that with the chance of screwing things up. I'm not a computer whiz so I'm hesitant to just start removing things!
