Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:17 PM PDT I haven't seen anyone discussing how iOS prevents/mitigates app piracy with its strict rules and procedures on side-loading apps. On android and PC, piracy is much more common because the systems allow users to install any app from essentially any source, and obviously there are people out there who will abuse this freedom. You know what's worse than paying Apple 30% of your revenue for using their services? Having your app distributed and available to download for millions of users for free on torrent sites or cloud share sites. If I were a game developer, I'd rest easy knowing I pay Apple a 30% cut for all their services and that iOS's "walled garden" makes it virtually impossible to pirate my app on an iPhone running iOS. Epic Games has complained that Apple's process is broken by forcing all apps to be distributed via their App Store, but in reality this is a protective measure and service done for developers. Sure, big studios like Epic Games have probably outgrown the App Store or are able to operate without needing all of the services included with the App Store; however, the App Store wasn't made with large studios in mind, I've always thought it was a way for smaller studios or individuals to "get discovered." For these developers, Apple's services are probably extremely useful. Imagine being an individual developer trying to make money off an app on a system/platform that allows easy installation of apps from external sources. For micro-transaction games like Fortnite, piracy of the app doesn't matter because most of their revenue comes from add-ons (skins, currencies, dances, etc.) not selling the app, and the services that Apple offers doesn't matter either due to the size of the studio. To me, Epic Games comes off as self-centered in all of this as they fail to see how many of these processes are in place to protect smaller developers. Epic Games is trying to pass themselves off as the "under dog" or the "little guy" or "champion of the people," but in reality this is such a selfish PR ploy that, if successful, could be extremely detrimental to smaller developers on iOS who get good use from the App Store services.
