    The real battery life on 2019 MacBook Pro 16" is like just 3 hours, very far from the "up to 11 hours wireless web" claimed by Apple. I would get much better results from the quad-core 2020 MacBook Air 13", right?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:32 PM PDT

    I've been a Mac user since System 7. I'm a backend/UNIX developer. I do not use an IDE locally. I was issued a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" by my company, without having any choice (I would have probably chose MacBook Air from the start), and I hate this laptop.

    The screen is nice, and the speaker setup is impressive. However...

    • It's huge/heavy at 2.0kg;
    • crashes and freezes all the time due to the issues with integrated/discrete graphics (I've never even used an external monitor with it, and 10.15.4 still crashed on a biweekly basis, 10.15.6 seems somewhat better in that it's just a 2 sec screen flicker instead of a crash?);
    • the TouchBar gimmick makes it impossible to rest the hands on the keyboard, as any professional backend software developer always does to ensure quick access to all the possible keyboard shortcuts;
    • the battery life is absolutely horrible at merely 3 hours when you have Firefox open with just a few dozen tabs, without the CPU load showing anything significant (other than deleted eating 30% of the CPU on a regular basis) -- even though it's a brand new battery (currently at 55 cycles because it probably goes through 2 to 3 cycles per workday now, if I ever use it around the flat), and even though it's rated by Apple at "up to 11 hours wireless web" -- I'm still getting a better uptime from my mid-2013 11" MacBook Air, it would appear;
    • there's no way to disable the discrete graphics card (gfx.io settings don't seem to work -- it only works to enable discrete graphics, doesn't work to disable the auto-switching);
    • there's no way to disable Turbo Boost (Turbo Boost Switcher doesn't seem to work, even though I both restarted the system, as well as allowed the kext through the System Preferences; I'm not entirely sure if this has something to do with the certificate signing and my system being externally managed with a different certificate set, I wish there were better ways to troubleshoot Turbo Boost Switcher);
    • even the larger oversized Trackpad is a negative, because after I've enabled the "Tap to click" (I think it used to be the default in an earlier OS X?), I'm constantly getting phantom clicks everywhere, I have to presume that the sheer size of the Trackpad is the reason why;
    • even though it has a 96W charger, connected directly to the MBP 16" without any docks or anything, it still takes several hours to charge even to 80%, which is simply not acceptable, where it seemingly takes the same amount of time to drain this 100Wh battery as it takes to charge it;
    • often runs uncomfortably hot on the lap, especially if any video is going on, although at least the fans are quiet enough that I almost never hear them spinning up (because I don't actually put any load on the machine, as all my dev is done remotely, which is why it's even more surprising that I'm only getting like 3h of battery life out of it).

    Basically, 2019 MacBook Pro 16" is a really bad laptop for programming, and 100% not worth the premium price -- 2399 USD MSRP. Sadly, our shortsighted IT department only deems the 13" (2020 w/ Intel 8th Gen) and 16" (2019 w/ Intel 9th Gen) MacBook Pro laptops approved; with the MacBook Air only ever allowed as an unsupported custom special order.

    I think the lack of the TouchBar alone is enough to justify special-ordering of a quad-core 2020 MacBook Air (Intel 10th Gen w/ 16GB LPDDR4X), but I'm also curious how would the other issues be addressed by this "downgrade" to "upgrade" plan? Can anyone scientifically confirm that the real battery life is better on the current quad-core Intel 10th Gen 2020 MacBook Air than MBP 16"? I've tried Googl'ing for comparisons, and all I find are lots of articles that merely compare the official specs, or somehow claim that MBP 16" does get close-to-advertised runtime, when I know it's not the case, at least when I don't dim the display to the lowest setting (I often use it by the window when on the battery, at 100% brightness), and aren't using Safari.

    What's the minimum battery life at full brightness that I can expect with 2019 MacBook Pro 16" (6-core Intel 9th Gen / 16GB DDR4) and 2020 MacBook Air 13" (10W TDP 4-core Intel 10th Gen / 16GB LPDDR4X)? Where would the 2020 MacBook Pro 13" (8th Gen / 16GB LPDDR3) fall into in such a comparison? Has anyone done any real comparison, not just of the published specs?

    2017 Macbook pro giving me a pink-ish screen on opening up from sleep mode since year one and now the battery gets drained overnight in sleep mode.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:31 PM PDT

    Hey guys, I bought my mac in 2017, September. Its an 8 gig 13" pro currently running on high sierra 10.13.6.

    Issue no.1) So not long after the purchase it started giving me a pink-ish screen for a second right after I opened it up from sleep mode. It was weird, but didnt have any effect on the performance so I kinda learned to live together with this issue until a point when I had some free time (i am working in the restaurant business and really value my free time) to actually run to an apple store and tell the guys over there about the issue. They told me that they can take it in, but even tho if I have warranty and its a problem that could be fixed with a software reinstall lets say, i gotta have to pay for it. So I decided not to leave it there and jumped back into my busy workdays.

    Issue no.2) Recently the battery started getting fully drained while in sleep mode and quite frankly I dont understand the issue. I am absolutely not a heavy user, my mac has 77 cycle counts since '17 September.

    Could you guys help me out with some troubleshooting tips or put me in the right direction to them with some links please? Would really appreciate it!

    Thanks a ton and have a wonderful day!

    Recommended Power Bank for 16" MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:44 PM PDT

    Hi,

    I've been shopping for a power bank that I can use for my 16" MacBook Pro (2019), but I can't quite figure out which one would work well enough for it. I don't really know how large it would have to be in order to give the Pro one full charge (or at least an 80% charge). I'm also unsure how much output it would need while charging in order to allow me to continue using the MacBook (web browsing/watching videos) at the same time.

    Has anyone had any good experience with certain power banks for the 16"? Thanks in advance.

    Is is ok to place my MacbookPro on IKEA RISSLA Desk Pad (which contains steel underneath the surface)? I’m concern that this might harm the battery in long-run?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:01 PM PDT

    In IKEA product description, it doesn't say anything about being magnetic, but when I place the MacBook on there it feels as though the pad pulls the laptop towards itself. I don't feel this gravity when I place it on wooden desk.

    Please see the link to IKEA page

    Need Help! MacBook Air 2020 vs iPad Pro 2020 for general use

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 08:04 PM PDT

    I just bought the MacBook Air 2020 and was shocked to see how grainy the camera was! I clearly did not look into the reviews for updating my 2011 MacBook Pro to the 2020 Air. Normally this wouldn't bother me too much but I'm starting online classes this week and will have to do lots of video chats and presentations.

    I'm torn if I should switch to the IPad Pro or just get an external camera for my MacBook Air. I can't afford both. I've looked at people's advice but it was usually for students in intense programs and not similar to my situation.

    1. My program is only a year (it's fast track) and it doesn't require any intense software as it is in the social studies area. So after this, I may not need it for school purposes.

    2. I only need to take notes, read online material, watch Netflix, and participate in online classes via video chat.

    3. I'm not that creative and although I enjoy drawing, I won't need to be making creative projects with the Apple pen but I do like the idea of having that as an option for me.

    Please let me know if you have any advice, and which you prefer if you have used both!

    Why is the camera quality so bad on the 2016 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:44 AM PDT

    I paid $2400 for my 13 inch MacBook Pro, and the camera is still terrible. They're still making it the same quality on their 16 inch MacBook Pro's which is unbelievable for a $3800 device.

    I accidently dragged my Desktop, Downloads, and My Mac into Trash, now they are stuck there?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 05:09 PM PDT

    Hey guys, new Mac user here. Quick tl:dr at bottom

    I was downloading Dropbox about a month ago when it asked if I wanted to auto-upload files to Dropbox. Not thinking, I clicked yes, and it started putting every file I had into the Dropbox tab - Downloads, Desktop, even My Mac. I quickly deleted them, as my Dropbox was shared with other people, but this deleted them from my files completely, not just from my Dropbox tab.

    Now, the majority of my files are stuck in the Trash and can't be dragged out for some reason, creating messed up "?" files and remaining in the trash. In turn, i cannot use vital apps like Adobe, Python, and cannot even save screenshots or other files, unless I put them in the Applications tab. Can anyone help me? Been struggling with this problem for a while and it's started to weigh down on me.

    TL:DR, deleted vital computer files into Trash, now they show errors when dragged out, and remain in Trash, no matter what I try.

    MacBook Air 2020 for Dev(Ops)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 07:44 AM PDT

    MacBook Air 2020 for dev(ops)

    Hello Mac fellas!

    I am looking at MB Air (1.2 GHz i7, 16GB ram and 256 or 512 storage, still thinking about last one).

    Currently I am using MB Pro 2015 early with i5 and 8 GB ram but I definitely need more ram. So, it's time for a change. I have couple of Linux options but prefer to stick with Apple (I have iphone and ipad, so ..).

    What I do? DevOps + some scripting/coding. I usually work in the cloud but I always have at least 2 IDEs open, sometimes more. It depends on what Im working but it's between PyCharm, IntelliJ, VSCode or Atom. Nowadays I don't use often VMs but from time to time I use one for Win10. But almost every time I have 1-2-3 docker containers spinned up and running. When I write code it's non-compilable one (Python, JS, bash, Groovy and stuff like Terraform, Ansible).

    What's usually up on the system? Slack, Teams, 2-3 IDEs, Telegram, Chrome with 10-20 tabs(really depends here), Spotify, Terminal(s).

    My current Mac is doing okay but it lacks ram and it feels like this .. Sometimes it's laggy. I have a powerful PC where I usually work but it happens a lot for me to work outside the city and I want a new laptop which feels more speedy.

    I am asking because I've never worked with such "small" processors and most of the time I have ram issues, not CPU. I DONT do photo/video editing so throttling is not an issue for me. Also, battery life is important for me where Air is usually a champ. I travel a lot so weight is a factor as well. And price looks really nice tbh even with i7 and 16 gigs of ram.

    Also, please give your opinion on i5 vs i7 here on Air.

    Thank you for your help! 🍎

    Would like opinion between these 2 MacBook pros.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:51 PM PDT

    I just purchased a MacBook Pro from Microcenter. This is my first Mac computer and I am absolutely loving it so far! All the complaints on the keyboard aside, I really haven't noticed it much. I actually enjoy typing on this keyboard.

    here are my current specs for the MacBook I just purchased for $700.00 from Microcenter, plus a $230 2 year Accidental damage warranty ( if you ever shopped at Microcenter, you would know how amazing their warranty is!)

    • Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MUHQ2LL/A Mid 2019 13.3" Laptop Computer - SilverIntel Core i5 Processor 1.4GHz; 8GB LPDDR3-2133 Onboard RAM; 128GB Solid State Drive; Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645

    Here is the specs for a deal that I reserved to pick up by Tuesday this week.

    • Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar MR942LL/A Mid 2018 15.4" Laptop Computer - Space GrayIntel Core i7 Processor 2.6GHz; 16GB DDR4-2400 Onboard RAM; 512GB Solid State Drive; AMD Radeon Pro 560X 4GB GDDR5

    Now my question is,

    • is there any difference between these 2 models? same 3rd gen butterfly keyboard? same storage drive speed?, etc, that I should know about before returning the one I have for that one?
    • I will be getting the same 2 year accidental protection from Microcenter for that laptop as well. does this laptop have any issues that my current one does not? ex: overheating issues.

    thank you very much! with the apple store being closed and all, it sucks not even really being able to go play with one in an apple store without making an appointment.

    1 yr resell value - 2020 i3/i5 MBA vs 2020 Base MBP

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 11:57 AM PDT

    I am looking for opionions about what you think will have the better resell value for fall of 2021. I am getting either the MBA i3 or i5 8/256 or the base MBP within the week. Next fall when then 2nd gen, or at least more developed/redesigned, MacBook line is released I will sale this one and get the newer MBP(hopefully 14").

    Honestly the MBA will cover my needs currently and the heat issue is not a concern. I am needing something now and would rather wait for the ARM processors to be out a bit, for both hardware and 3rd party software support. I am strickly looking for which will hold it's value better in approximately one year.

    Thanks for any insight.

    MacBook Air 2020 Unexpectedly Shut down and Battery needs servicing...

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:47 PM PDT

    MacBook Air 2020 Unexpectedly Shut down and Battery needs servicing...

    So this is my SECOND MBA 2020 that had this issue. First one got replaced by Apple, forgave them, but now I'm kinda tight.

    Around 50-60% battery, I'll be using my MacBook Air on battery power like normal, not doing any heavy tasks, and then all of a sudden it will randomly die. Upon plugging it in it takes 5 minutes to power on and then it displays battery percent of 0%. Then magically, after 5 minutes, it jumps up to 60!!..

    Now I don't know what the hell gives but there's something wrong with the battery. I've tried battery calibration by letting it charge to 100% overnight and then draining it to 0% but it won't get to 0.. it'll die at 50%.

    Second MacBook Air 2020 to have this happen to me and it's unfortunate because I was upgrading from a 2015 MBP which died randomly. I treat all my computers GREAT and with plenty of respect, I don't even like fingerprints on my screen, so this is frankly annoying and I can only imagine what's happening to more rougher everyday users out there.

    I want to trade this into Apple for an iPad Pro (I'll even pay the difference.) but that's like wishing for a Maserati.

    If anyone has some help please leave it below. Thanks all.

    EDIT::
    Here's what my battery menu says:

    Help needed: Macbook Pro and Dell monitor.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:33 AM PDT

    Hey,

    I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch (mid 2012) and Dell U2417H monitor. I am unable to get the monitor or the laptop to detect each other. I am using a thunderbolt to HDMI (female) adaptor and then using an HDMI cable to connect to the monitor

    Some observations: 1. The monitor works successfully with the HDMI cable connected to a windows laptop (lenovo) 2. The macbook successfully connects to a Sony TV using the adaptor and HDMI cable.

    So none of the parts are faulty on their own. Any suggestions on how the Mac can work the Dell monitor?

    Thanks

    Would be grateful for an advice. My budget is 500-1000 GBP.

    Help!!!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:08 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone!!!

    Need help from the veterans present here. I had a setting in keyboard shortcuts > Services > create an email with attachment in macOS High Sierra. When turned on and assigned a combination on shortcut keys, this service used to compose a new email with the selected files as attachment.

    After updating to MacOS Catalina, this option was not anymore present in the services menu but after researching gor a while on the Internet , I got the solution. But now when I have fresh reinstalled the OS again, I can't find the solution again and it keeps irritating me.

    Do anyone of us have any solution for this. It'll be of great help.
