    uh... help?

I have been using seagate external harddrive for sometime now to store my iphone images and several movies that I downloaded. But a couple days back, I found out that I wasn't able to move them anymore to another folder. (they had no issue when I played them.)

I didn't have any problem just a week a go so I don't understand why this is happening.

    I did google and try changing the privilege setting to read&write but I still get 'The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission' alert;;;

Does this mean I'm not the admin of my own macbook???Asking for help to anyone who knows how to solve this issue!

MacBook overheating and Safari using too much energy? Get rid of some extensions

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 03:30 PM PDT

My MacBook Pro has been running hot ever since I got it. I was just browsing Twitter and reading essays and the fans would come on.

I finally decided to uninstall my adblocker and it's extensions and the problem was gone.

Multiple Desktops - secondary spaces all are full screen

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:27 PM PDT

How do I make the windows in my secondary, etc. desktops stop making everything full-screen? When I hover over the bar at the top to reveal the green shrink button, the window pops out of the desktop and goes back to the main one. How can I make it smaller when I can't access the corner to drag it?

-Edit: was able to figure it out. Dragging a window from one desktop up to the top makes it full-screen, but clicking the plus button in the top bar first and then dragging the window up to the space keeps it the size it is currently (not full-screen).

MacBook battery not charging, I've tried all of the standard trouble shoot methods.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:08 PM PDT

I have a mid 2011 MacBook Air. I purchased it used, and it needed a new battery, as the one in it was no longer charging. I purchased an egoway battery, installed it without issue, bought a brand new charger (other one was frayed). Charged and worked without issue for about 6 months.

My laptop was set up in my basement, plugged in. We had a bad flood, the charger was submerged in water but the laptop was up high enough. Water was removed quickly, no chance for moisture damage. Thats when I noticed that the laptop would show connection to a charger, but the charger wasn't actually refilling the battery. I figured water damage from the flood weakened the charger, so I bought a new one. It didn't help.

My MacBook is currently running the latest version of Catalina (I got the OS online and did a reset with new OS instal.)

I've tried: Resetting SMC, unistalling and reinstalling the battery, checking for update.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Free mp3 player instead of iTunes?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:55 AM PDT

I can't stand iTunes but listen to audio books fairly often because I have vision problems. I usually listen on my phone, but on my macbook the only software I have right now that can play mp3's is iTunes. Any suggestions for simple, free software I should try?

I'm upgrading my setup and was told to buy a Mac, do you think this is true?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 02:11 AM PDT

I'm in the market to upgrade my setup and everyone I spoke to said to use the Apple discount for students and buy a MacBook Pro but I'm not convinced this is a smart move.

For reference, I have a dell XPS so I fear another laptop wouldn't do me any favours, especially since I can get a really powerful PC for about 300 less. Do you guys think I'd be better off buying a desktop instead of another laptop? For reference, I'll be coding quite heavily and I want to have some gaming performance too.

    eGPU Setups?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:44 AM PDT

Hey all - I recently purchased a 2020 MBP 13". I'm heading to college for engineering in the fall (one of my professors said performance isn't critical because most work is on their machines anyway). My question is, if I needed to boost performance to run SolidWorks on Win10, or something of the like, what would be some good (cost effective) eGPUs? I've seen some that run up to $600 and I'm just wondering if there's any cheaper options if I need them.

possible to retrieve data from SSD of 2009 MBP13 w corrupted EFI? Just purchased the new MBP16

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:10 AM PDT

I am wondering if it's possible to transfer data directly from a 2009 MBP13 (w/ a corrupted EFI chip) to a new MBP16. I know it can be done when setting up the new mac if both computers work, but I would like to know if a direct transfer is possible before I buy a cable to make that happen. Any help on fixing my 2009 MBP would also be greatly appreciated as I'd love to keep it going as long as possible. I'm an electrical engineering student with some Surface Mount soldering experience (built an arduino clone), so I am prepared to step out of my comfort zone a bit if necessary.

Including some extra info in case it's relevant: I have a mid-2009 unibody MacbookPro 13" that I upgraded 4-5 years ago with additional RAM (2x PC3-8500 4 GB RAM Chips from iFixIt) and an SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM) from amazon). Last year I returned to school and needed Windows, so I followed some guides online to disable my MBP13's SIP, a necessary step since I was not natively able to make a new partition to dualboot from a bootable USB, and I had to change something in a plist file so that BootCamp would allow me to partition the harddrive. After I got done what I needed, I tried to re-enable SIP but got errors when I tried. Never got around to fixing that ( <- this is the bit I think might me most relevant to helping me recover data, if it gets technical).

About two weeks ago my 2009 just pfft and quit on me. Gives me an SOS beep and a black screen when I turn it on, which I've found out means it has a corrupted EFI ROM chip. Will this corrupted chip keep me from transferring data directly to my new mac? How can I recover the files on the harddrive? Really just need the last two months of stuff (time since my previous backup...). How do I go about fixing the old mac?

Im leaning towards a macbook air though. Which year macbooks would u recommend? Any specific years to avoid due to keyboard problems and what not? This will be my first mac so pretty excited! Recommend me some places to buy used macs as well please. Thanks in advance!

Water damage on my 2017 air 13” keyboard

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 05:29 AM PDT

I'm very stupid and accidentally spilled a tiny bit of water on my macbook air keyboard and it hasn't turned back on. It won't even charge. I already bought a new laptop bc I needed a better one anyways but I'm wondering if mine will ever turn back on. I made the mistake of not turning off my laptop right away and I've tried to turn it back on, which I've been told is a bad idea. Anything I'd be able to do? It's been like a week since I've touched it. I'm assuming it's shot.

MPB 2018 fans run loud with dual monitor: will eGPU help ?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:31 AM PDT

My MacBook Pro 2018 is currently connected to a hub where two 2k 144hz monitors are plugged in. There are a few issues that arise from time to time (144hz sometimes not being available, distorted image, etc) but the largest issue are the fans running loud.

I understand driving those two monitors takes some power but I was wondering if plugging them in an eGPU would solve my issue

    Thanks

Should I turn off WiFi and Bluetooth before I close my MacBook?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:00 AM PDT

I have read online to not shutdown my MacBook, but rather put it to sleep. What I want to know is that, is it better to leave the wifi and bluetooth on when it is sleeping or should I switch it off (to conserve battery)? And if so, what automations can I do to do that?
