Why do some people install a new update by clean wiping their MacBook and do it via USB?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:24 PM PDT

So I've seen a couple of threads about this and I'm like why? Isn't it easier just to install a new update via App Store or a download link or something?

MacBook Air battery capacity dropping faster than expected

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:43 PM PDT

    Processing img srvvzngp83g51...

I've had my Macbook Air 2020 since June 2020 (i5, 16GB RAM). This is a screenshot of the battery capacity as recorded on coconutBattery. After 9 cycles it's at 92.3%. My nearly 3-year-old iPhone X is still at 95%!

Do I need to calibrate my battery or something? I do have AppleCare+ so replacement won't be an issue, but I find it weird to be dropping so rapidly.

Noob Question - Macbook Pro 13 (2020) - External Display Monitor

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:01 PM PDT

New to Mac, and so far super excited! Having a bit of problem with my external Acer monitor unfortunately .

I have the 2020 Macbook Pro 13, and am having an issue connecting it to my computer monitor. My computer monitor only has HDMI and VGA, so I've plugged the HDMI into a Anker USB-C hub, which then plugs into my Macbook via USB-C. However, the resolution is really bad, and text appears fuzzy.

I played around with the display settings on the Mac, and set it to scaled, 1080p, but it still looks kind of terrible. I am using the MacBook in clamshell mode. Is this is an issue with my monitor, or the converter? Would a USB-C to HDMI wire work better?

Alternatively, would it be better to get a new monitor that supports USB-C?

[Help] Clamshell mode only works when I send inputs

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:59 PM PDT

So I have this weird issue:

I connect my pc to a an external monitor over usb-c. It's a 16 inch macbook pro.

The monitor charges the laptop at 95W.

I have a 3rd party keyboard and mouse, both are bluetooth.

Before connecting the monitor, I do make sure that both the keyboard and mouse are paird with the monitor.

HOWEVER, the macbook only sends output (image) to the monitor if while the monitor is turning on, i send inputs (key presses and mouse clicks) from the keyboard and the mouse.

This is such a weird issue and i can't find anyone who experienced this.

Any ideas how I might go about solving it?

2020 iMac vs 2019 MBP 16". Who gets the nod?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 02:54 PM PDT

I purchased a 16" MBP arriving on Tuesday, thinking about returning and getting the iMac.

A bit torn...What would you guys go with?

    27" iMac

    • 3.6GHz 10-Core + 1TB storage + self upgrade 32GB Ram
    • $2,459.00 + $180 + $130 = $2,769.00.
    • Would be paired with LG 34" Curved Monitor.

    16" MBP

    • 2.4GHz 8-Core + 32GB Ram
    • $2,599.00 + $360 = $2959.00.
    • Would be paired with LG 34" Curved Monitor + 27" Thunderbolt display.

    Notes:

    • All prices education discount + pre tax.
    • Currently using a 2015 MBP with 27" Thunderbolt display. Photo here: https://imgur.com/a/plIRLmq
    • I'm not too concerned about the ARM coming out. Feel like Apple's goal is to increase profitability and keep performance the same or less.
    • I don't travel too much for work, 99% of the time I'm in my office at home.

    Advantages of iMac:

    • 10-core, 10th gen processer
    • 8GB of GDDR6 memory (not super valuable to me)
    • Comes with magic keyboard + mouse ($170 value)
    • Obviously larger screen (~$250 value or so)
    • Option to upgrade RAM if needed
    • Less Dongles

    Advantages of Macbook:

    • Portability, although not of huge importance to me
    • Maybe better resale value (more buyers?)
    • In my setup would have a nice extra screen

On paper seems like a no brainer with the iMac, but what are your thoughts?

13" 2011 MacBook Pro - Fix, Update, and Reuse

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:38 PM PDT

    Reddit,

I have an old 2011 MacBook Pro I'm looking to fix and use again. First, what is the newest/best OS I can update my dated laptop too? Just wiped the computer for the first time since 2011 and my laptop is running on OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). From what I'm reading, I can update it to High-Sierra but nothing higher? Is this a possibility?

I'm also located in Orange County and need computer repair recommendation. I think the heatsink is giving out, when the computer is starting up, it sounds like a jet of taking off.

Regardless, any help woudl be appreciated. Look forward to speaking with you all!

    Hi all,

Just got a new MBP and liking how much more I can see by selecting more space. When this setting for display is selected does it have any negative affects or make things look worst then the default setting?

    Possible virus on MacBook

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 11:59 AM PDT

Hi all. I'm 90% sure my MacBook Air has a virus. Is anyone able to confirm this? Sometimes it will randomly reboot and then show prompts for "accountsd wants to use the "login" keychain" and then have me enter the keychain password. If I cancel, it will continue to show this prompt, with a different beginning. For example, "cloudd wants to use the "login" keychain", "Messages Agent wants to use the "login" keychain", or "com.apple.icloudhelper.xpc wants to....."....is this a virus? Should I contact Apple about this, or what would be the best next steps to take?

    Best USB C port expander

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I recently bought a MacBook Air. I'm coming from a 2011 MacBook Pro so I am going to have to adjust to less ports. I am looking for an expander that has HDMI, usb and possibly Ethernet. An amazon cord fried my old MacBook so I'm trying to be careful on where I buy things that go into my computer now. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Quick question on Intel Macs

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:30 AM PDT

So I know that Apple will continue to support Intel Macs for the next couple of years, but will the developers, will they switch to developing apps for Arm MacBooks?

Because I know that Apple said they would support PowerPc for the next couple of years but the devs switched over?

Is there any difference this time compared to the Power PC situation a while back?

Also this is probably a not so smart question but will apple discount their 16 inch Mac book pros once they release the first arm MacBook?

Macbook Pro Mid 2015, safari full screen glitches

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:16 AM PDT

Hey, so whenever I use Safari to watch Netflix or Youtube in full screen the video glitches every once in awhile.

This has happened ever since I've got the mac (couple years now).

I've reinstalled and wiped the mac several times since then.

Yet the issue has always persisted.

I've been googling a bit yet haven't been able to find a single working solution so far.

Is there any fix to this?

Macbook air i5 vs baseline pro 2020 for student?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:53 AM PDT

In the next week i'll be needing a new computer and i dont know if i should get base pro or i5 air i dont need to edit videos and stuff like that. However, i'm gonna have A-level math which means that i'll need to be able to run a math program. It isnt really that demanding but I dont want the computer to overheat of course. Besides that i'l just be writing in word documents, making powerpoints and watching netflix to be honest

Which one do you think i should choose? Thank you!
