Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:09 PM PDT Short story long, I'm stuck in a FileVault decryption loop. MacOS does not allow you to back up to your local TimeMachine drive while any FileVault process is running. The process progress bar says it should take 2 hours to decrypt. This is a lie. It takes weeks, and my MBP alway has an unrelated panic at some point and reboots. Note: I'm trying not to use it at all so it can move through decryption undisturbed, however after a few days on idle, it always reboots itself and begins the decryption process all over again from 6%. This has occurred 4x. I've been waiting 45 days so I can finally backup my Mac and do a full reinstall of MacOS. [link] [comments]

Should I format my external drive APFS or MacOS Extended? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:48 PM PDT Hi, My laptop is MacBook Pro 16-inch,2019. The system is Catalina 10.15.4. And I am using Samsung T7 use store my music stuff. However it was incredibly slow for me to load anything, I looked up and people are saying its because I have to format my T7 to MacOS Extended (Samsung T7 was originally ExFAT). After I formatted my T7 to MacOS Extended, I found out the default system on my mac is APFS, so I wonder should I convert it to APFS? I am worried my external drive will still be slow since my external SSD and laptop internal disk are different... Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:43 PM PDT Is there a way to set the "now playing" in the notification centre to only work for Apple Music? I'll be playing some music off it and open a youtube video for example, and will go into notification centre to stop the music. But it then switches to whatever video I'm watching and pauses that instead while my music keeps playing. This is pretty annoying, is there any known way around it? [link] [comments]
Connect rMBP 2012 tot LG Ultrafine 5K (2020) Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:17 PM PDT Is it really impossible to have a rMBP 2012, 15-inch power the LG Ultrafine 5K? I have this older mac which I temporarily will need to use, so I want to connect it to my Ultrafine 5K display. I know the support page states that the 2012 mac is not supported, however I read a comment online from someone who was able to use this mac with the display. Unfortunately, the topic was quite outdated, so I wasn't able to ask this person about it, which brought me here. Does anyone know of a way to connect this mac to the Ultrafine? I have a TB3>TB2 adapter which allows the mac to recognise the display, but it isn't able to produce any video output, so the screen stays black. If anyone knows of a way to get this to work I would be much appreciative. I don't need the 5K output, 4K or even ultra-HD is more than enough to get the job done. [link] [comments]

Mojave on a 2020, 13" MacBook Pro - SUCCESS - Urgent help needed Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:28 PM PDT Okay, here's the good news (for those that care) I've got Mojave (10.14.6) up and running on the internal drive of a 2020 13" MacBook Pro. I thought I had a small chance of making this work because the base model of the 2020 MBP (16,2) seemed nearly identical to the 2019 13" MBP (15,4). After fiddling with it for a couple of days, I managed to make it work. At first, I was pretty euphoric. But, of course, there are caveats. WiFi and Touch ID do not work at all. Also, while the trackpad does work, I don't have any configuration options in System Prefs. Otherwise, everything else seems functional. Graphics are accelerated. Sleep works. Bluetooth also works. The touchbar works - as does battery monitoring, microphone, speakers iSight and I think everything else. There's just no WiFi, TouchID and no options for the trackpad. WiFi and the trackpad are critical. While TouchID would be nice. So, how do I take the appropriate kexts from Catalina and make them Mojave compatible? I'm in a big hurry as I only have eleven days left before I need to make a decision if I'm keeping this Mac. If I can't get at least get WiFi and the trackpad working, I'll return it back to Apple. So any constructive help anyone can give is much appreciated. Once I hopefully get everything, or nearly everything, working I'll write up a guide. (And please, no off topic discussion on why I want to run Mojave. Suffice to say that I've got a lot of 32-bit software that I'd still like to run. I'm also not looking for any virtualization options in Catalina) [link] [comments]
Creating "Album Collections" in MUSIC Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:32 AM PDT I know I can add all the songs from an album into a playlist, but there really should be a feature where you can create a collection of albums, that you can look at in an album view type of way. For example I've got 10 specific albums from this year, that I currently am listening to, it would be nice to have just these in a collection somewhere so I can browse and play something from this group. Which versions of Apple's Desktop OS are binary compatible? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:15 PM PDT I say Apple's OS because I'm not sure whether to call it Macintosh, Mac OSX, macOS, etc. I was hoping to find some kind of chart that showed the interoperability of binaries across the platform. I'm mostly interested in interoperability in the last 5 years or so. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS#Release_history This chart here shows that the Darwin Kernel is constantly being upgraded but that doesn't necessarily mean the OSes can't run binaries compiled on another OS version. Does anyone know where to find information on this? - or have something to link me to? Thanks [link] [comments]
APFS disk "Other Volumes in Container" after messing with Big Sur Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:08 AM PDT I upgraded to Big Sur, and then attempted to go back to Mojave, which failed. I had to wipe my disk multiple times. My disk is now extemely messed up. For example, I have 5 disks each worth 121 GB. Also, each of them has space taken up by "other volumes in container". Any tips? More info on the Apple Dev Forum [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:04 AM PDT My ethernet port stopped working on the iMac running 10.15.6. Changed router, reset new router to default. Router detects a Windows PC on ethernet, but not on the Mac. It's on 10.15.6 now, but this has been happening since Catalina was released. I have deleted and readded the Ethernet port in Network settings, with no change. I have tried to renew the IP address, but there are no IP numbers in to start with its hard to expect it to renew. There is no light on any ethernet port on the router. It just says cable is disconnected, which of course it is not. I have changed over for 2 brand new ethernet cables. I have examined the port entrance and there is no damage or foreign material lodged in there. The strange thing is some times I just leave the computer turned on for some hours and the ethernet port starts working on its own. We have a lot of thunderstorms so I have started turning of the computers and router off at night. This is the second router the ISP has given me, and although I can use Wifi, I prefer the stability of ethernet. I found this reference to Apple blocking ethernet ports with SIP, but this is beyond me; Something about . I just prefer to use Ethernet rather than Wifi, which works fine. When I disable Wifi it used to activate Ethernet and vice versa. There is a https://youtu.be/6W-9NHcaU58 but he has not been near his channel for 3 years. There are Incompatible entries in there, but they are not like the one described in the video. In closing, once I opened up the applications list in system report, I was shocked to see applications I and email addresses I got rid of years ago. It would be good to clean those all out, but of course the ethernet disabling problem is my first priority. macOS 10.15.6, Imac late 2015 5K Retina. Router: Sagemcom branded as F@st 5350v2 Canalbox. Catalina 10.15.6 keeps restarting my iMac Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:07 AM PDT Hello, Starting on Sunday my business 2019 iMac keeps restarting. Looks like the unit will operate for about 10-20 minutes and then shuts downs and restarts. At first I thought it might be the adobe photoshop causing the problems because it looked like the crash happened when I working with a single image in editing program. I called Apple support and they told me that their records stated the recent 10.15.6 update was causing problems with ps 2020. They instructed me to reload the os which I did and it seem to work for about 30 mins and the same troubles. I then open up a older version of ps and same troubles. I then tried doing test with not opening up the image editing program and the computer stay on for a little longer but same troubles. After speaking to Apple support one last time they instructed to wipe out the box and reload the time machine back-up. I will check on this when I get into the office later today because it was taking many hours last evening but has everyone had these problems before? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:27 PM PDT Ahoy folks. Yet another noob foolishly attempting a beta install (iOS 14 worked so well on my iPhone, I couldn't resist trying Big Sur). It's been stuck on the progress bar at about 20 percent for three full days now, so I figure it's not going anywhere. When I restart the MacBook (2015 pro), it lets me log in, but then it goes straight back to the black install progress screen - with no change in its progress. I haven't had any luck googling a solution, so... any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments]

can I install 10.12 Sierra on new MBP system drive? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:08 AM PDT TL;DR: Hi all, I have an issue where a piece of software I use quite literally every day for my work will only run smoothly on 10.12 Sierra or older versions of OS X. It "functions" on 10.13 but has a lot of issues, so I rely on 10.12 (or even 10.11) to work. I really need to purchase a new MacBook but I am worried about not being able to use 10.12 on a newer machine, whether it be installing it on the internal SSD or booting with an external system drive via thunderbolt/usb-c DETAILS: I have been running a mid-2012 13" 2.9ghz i7 MBP into the ground for the past eight years. It is plagued with GPU issues and regardless of how many clean OSX installs or new SSD drives I've tried to get it to keep chugging, I think it's finally too tired to function. I've been looking into OWC refurbished machines (MUHN2LL/A, the mid 2019 models) but it just occurred to me that because of the touchbar among other things, will these machines even boot to an external system drive running 10.12? OWC says these have "macOS 10.14.5 or later pre-installed" which won't work for me. I'm ALSO looking into the refurb mid-2017 machines (MPXQ2LL/A - honestly, I don't need or want a touchbar) and I assume these shipped with Sierra so in theory I should be able to either "downgrade" the system drive with a clean install of 10.12 or at least boot 10.12 off an external SSD? I have done plenty of OSX clean installs over the years, "upgrading" and downgrading the OS on older machines and I have stockpiled old OSX installers from 10.8 to 10.13, thus I am familiar with how to get an older version of OSX installed on a system drive even if it's not current. Securely Erasing SSD on my MacBook Air Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:55 AM PDT I want to sell my 2017 MacBook Air since I've purchased a newer refurbished model with more storage. However I have concerns about using the standard procedures to erase and restore outlined in Apple's guide https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065 Is the simple erase from disk utility mentioned in their guide good enough? I do not have File Vault turned on and I have lots of data already written to the drive. Would enabling file vault work at this stage or is that something I would have had to turn on initially, before writing any actual data? Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments]
Super High CPU Usage on MacBook Air 2015 even before logging in. Please help Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:29 AM PDT So My MacBook Air 2015 13 inch has been experiencing some major CPU usage even before I login. Even the part when the OS boots up takes too much time. When I check activity monitor it shows extremely high usage in bursts. After a while it goes back to normal but the CPU gets bck to around 90% usage when I open the most basic app. What could be happening? [link] [comments] |
