Though Big Sir’s UI has been polarising, we can all agree that preview and new alert popups are really good.

macOS Preview PDF warning - not always WYSIWYG

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 02:38 AM PDT

I'm on Mojave, and was editing some important PDF files and forms to send to the government. Really important. All looked good. Printed to make sure, all perfect. They kept telling me that the information in my forms was wrong. Resend. Wrong. Repeat. Finally it dawned on me, perhaps there's a PDF incompatibility between the PDF programs I'm using and they are using. Sent them the "export to PDF" output, and "print to PDF" output, and they are fine.

Downloaded a trial-ware of another PDF program, and I saw the "wrong" data.

tl;dr - using Preview (at least on macos Mojave) for PDFs is not always going to be the same as what the other end sees. I recommend either "flatting" the PDF by doing a "save as PDF" or perhaps using another PDF editor. In any case, would be wise to check with another PDF viewer at a minimum.

macOS Big Sur 11 Beta download & Install issues + what to do if the beta update does not show up in software update.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:29 PM PDT

I am hearing from many users who are having issues getting the Big Sur Beta 2 update going.

Most of the problems revolve around the following.

    1. Download Problems

    2. Beta Update not showing up in Software Update

    3. Updating when the Mac was upgraded from a previous OS

    4. Trying to update a T2 Mac with Secure Boot not set to Full

I tried to put all the issues into one article. If you are seeing new issues relating to download/availability/install, let me know.

    Xcode and startup script query

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:47 AM PDT

I have a small shell script that checks if my mounts to my NAS are loaded and if not, mounts them.

This was running fine in my login items. Then I started getting an xcode error on startup so upgraded my (very old) xcode to the latest version for Mojave (11.4 IIRC).

Anyway, now when I boot, instead of running the script it loads it into an xcode editor window. How do I make it execute the script, as it used to instead of doing this?

    Virtualbox File

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:54 AM PDT

    Hi,

I can access an ISO of Big Sur but it's going to take a very long time to download - would anyone happen to have a pre-prepared Virtualbox file of either Big Sur or Catalina? If so could you send it to me?

I don't think this goes against any rules but if it does feel free to take the post down.

    Many thanks.

    MacOS failed install

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:18 AM PDT

My mac A1418 hard drive went bad and I had to change it. Got a new 1TB SSD and put it in the mac. I have os in the usb drive but when I try to install it it shows the new disk but doesn't allow to select it. I deleted all the files and formated it like most of the guides say on the internet but still no success. Any idea why?

Is AppleScript a dying breed? Is it worth it to continue building and using it right now? Is there something else I should be looking at, perhaps?

Mac made a second User Folder on Backup

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:12 AM PDT

I just got my Mac back from Apple after a repair. I Time Machine Backup'd the computer before sending it so I attempted to restore it on the computer, but it wouldn't let me because the blank Mac was reformatted to have a Sierra OS and my backup was on Mojave. So, I went through with the startup, made a new user with my name and updated the OS. I then used the Migration Assistant to read the Time Machine Backup and reformat the computer as it was. However, during that process, it made a stink about there being another user by the same name (my name) and if I wanted to overwrite it. I said yes, however, now that everything's restored, I've noticed that now the home folder is now "My Name 1" meanwhile the regular My Name user folder is now just sitting there unused and taking up space.

Because I work with a lot of programs that link files all over the place (eg. Premiere, InDesign) that could go potentially haywire because of it and because the "1" of the user name bothers me, I really want to try correcting this so that there's only one user folder that is just the one word of my name. However, I know that's probably a big process for the computer and I can't of course rename it normally. Any ideas how I can fix this?

Consistently getting 'The webpage is using significant memory' notification every 2ish minutes that I am in Google Maps in Safari. In Activity monitor the page is only using 1.5GB of RAM??

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:02 PM PDT

Is there a way to stop the notification because Jesus Christ is it the most annoying thing in the world. EVERY time Im in google maps it does it, especially when I switch to Street View. My MacBook is always plugged in so I am not worried about it draining the power (even though without it being plugged in it'd probably die in like 2 hrs). Is there maybe some sort of 3rd party extension that stops Safari from popping this notification up? The notification is literally useless, pop up once sure I get that just to be aware that the site is eating up RAM, but after that, fuck off and don't come back again. I AM AWARE NOW. Any help is appreciated!

Did anyone regret downloading the MacOS Big Sur beta on their main machine?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 01:33 PM PDT

I'm a little eager to try MacOS Big Sur, and I'm considering downloading the beta on my daily driver computer. Did anyone do this and come to regret it? Is it very buggy or laggy? (What were the worst bugs you encountered?)

Why doesn't Music.app use the system's default audio device?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I listen to music while working and I swap between AirPods & Bose QC35s through the day. If I'm listening to music with Music.app, when the AirPods disconnect from the Mac (and Bluetooth shows they're disconnected), then connect the Bose QC35s (and Bluetooth shows they're connected), Music.app still tries to use the AirPods as the audio device. So when play resumes, Music.app craps itself because it can't find the AirPods and wants to start outputting to the Macbook's speakers. If the system can automatically start outputting audio to the Bose QC35s, why doesn't Music.app do the same thing?

This is one of those twice-a-day kind of annoyances but combined with shitty Bluetooth connection, it gets really frustrating.

    2019 iMac and macOS - can't boot to 10.13

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:30 PM PDT

I have a (brand new) 2019 iMac and would like to run it under 10.13(.6 at the moment) on HFS+ to maximize the compatibility from my old iMac. However, whenever I try to boot to anything that has a valid and working copy of 10.13 on it (be it a bootable installer drive or the old iMac in target mode), I get the prohibitory symbol (🚫). I've already called Apple and they either try to give me solutions, say there's nothing they can do for me (and they don't want to help me retrograde the OS) or that Apple puts a sort of 'lock' to prevent people using older OSes.

Can anyone help me get it working, give me instructions? Is it even possible without fiddling with the hardware?

    Many thanks for your time.

Best malware remover for Mac paid and free?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:58 PM PDT

Hi folks. My girlfriend's mother is having problems with her computer. For instance occasionally when she searches Google for something the results page will pop up for a split second and she will be redirected to a sign-in page for Google. It's the legit sign-in page but she does not have a Google account nor does she wants one. I've removed malware from her computer in the past manually and while it wasn't overly difficult I can not find the source of this malware nor is it very obvious what the name of it is to find instructions to remove so I'm looking for a preferably free malware remover I can install on her computer when I get some free time over the weekend and nuke it. If I have to pay I will but I would greatly prefer something free.

I do not have a lot of experience with Macs. I have a work issued Macbook Pro but it is only ever used for work so I have no idea what's available for Macs
