PSA: If your fans are spinning like crazy for apparently no reason, open activity monitor and quit bluetoothd

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:04 AM PDT

I've been reading comments about the fans revving up for no reason during light usage such as browsing / office work. Might not help everyone who's having these but it may work for some.

I have a brand new 2020 Air. For the first week or so it was silent. Like dead silent, even during the initial setup, like some people report. I kept wondering why is everyone complaining about the fan noise when my fan wasn't even spinning.

The last few days the dreaded sound started. My laptop was getting really hot and the fans were driving me nuts. So I opened the activity monitor and surprisingly, bluetoothd was using 80-90% CPU. I double clicked and force quit the process and 2 minutes later voila! Silent like before.

I use my Airpods Pro and switch quite often between my mac and my iphone so I suspect there's a bug in the bluetooth daemon code somewhere. Hope it helps!

Why does this have to be so complicated

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:48 PM PDT

Planning to buy my first macbook ever and I'm so confused! I'm a social media manager who uses slack, gmail, instagram, zoom, canva, and photoshop (gifs, layout, and occasional drawing with wacom) and I dont know which one to buy!! My budget is the $1299 and I want my macbook to last about 5 years. Should I get the 2020 macbook air i5 with 16gb ram or a 2020 base macbook pro '13?

I just don't know if 8gb is a good idea in the long run, but on the other hand, ive been hearing bad things about the MBA's thermals and ive heard it cant run photoshop efficiently.

    Help pls!

Very confused on first macbook purchase ever, please help?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:26 PM PDT

Hey guys, so this will be my first time getting into a Mac OS device and i'm confused between the new MacBook Air 2020 (i5) and MacBook Pro 2020 13 inches base model. They cost the exact same unless i go for the 512gb version on pro which is 200$ more.

I'll be using it for Presentations, Photo Editing, some basic video editing, listen to a lot of music and watch videos.

My question is which is better buy and will give better performance? Considering they both cost the same. But one is i5 10th gen and the other is 8th.

    Problem with Logic Pro X

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:40 PM PDT

Is the sRGB display of the Air a dealbreaker?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:26 PM PDT

It's what's currently making me decide between an air and the pro. Is it that much of a difference? I have an i5 air on the way but I'm concerned about the display not looking like the display of my iPhone or iPad. I get the P3 display of the MacBook Pro should have similar colors as my devices, but would the air's display be that much different?

Best Non-2020 MacBookPro for Joe Average User Who Loves Gaming and Movies

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:37 PM PDT

I know it will be Apple and that I want a laptop. Logic would dictate that I go with a 2020 top of the line Macbook pro, yada yada yada. Well, I don't have the money right now and there are other issues at play (like a cracked screen on my iPad out of Apple Warranty) so I thought I would ask for people's ideas.

I would like a MacBook because it's a laptop (mobility and can always be turned into a desktop if needed) I want a Pro because the Air worries me might be too slow later on or even now with too much going on at the same time or games I tend to lean towards 13" instead of 15" because of price. They seem much more affordable I like playing games and although I've never had a problem with a game, I'd prefer to go for something with at least 16gb (however, I'm not an intensive game player that will notice that the fps dropped for 90 to 82 when my character gyrated his eyes by 20 degrees...) I believe in external storage harddrives but I'm also not comfortable with 256 GB so the minimum I'm comfortable with is 512 GB storage

Non-Negotiable 1- Runs Current MacOS 10.5 Catalina system and will continue to do so for at least 3 years 2- Can handle the graphic intensive games (I don't want to give the wrong impression. Say, I like to play Elder Scrolls, something called Villagers and Heroes, World of Warcraft. That's what I mean)

So, for an average user that emails, surfs the net, watches videos and movies, listens to music and podcasts, doesn't really do any "image editing magic" except for the very basics, and likes to play games (some of them a bit graphic intensive and I like good graphics like everybody else but I'm far from an expert so small technical differences that only the experts would notice probably wouldn't make a difference to me), what would you suggest? Without considering the latest 2020 models on offer, which macbook pro from the past few years would offer the most bang for its buck for my purposes, do you think?

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated

    MBP Suggestion for CPU-intensive work?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 06:05 PM PDT

I have a 2019 13" MBP base model with RAM upgraded to 16GB. I run CPU intensive work (lots of machine learning, sometimes taking hours together--this is just how my particular models are, GPUs are not faster). My laptop today went all the way to 91C, and usually hovers around 83C.

I wonder if a solution here should be to throw more money at the problem and get a beefier MBP. Of course, while the models are running, I'd like to be able to do other, regular stuff (about 10 Firefox tabs, Thunderbird, maybe watch something Netflix, etc.)

MacBook Air (Early 2015 13 inch) started to act up.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 05:21 PM PDT

So, my troubles began a couple weeks ago. Suddenly, the sound stopped working, there was a mute/circle with a cross through it. I tried resetting the smc, and shut it down and restarted it multiple times. It was on High Sierra, so I tried upgrading it to Mojave and Catalina. Now, the computer's fans are really loud with minimal use, the computer is slow and laggy as hell. Is there anyway to fix this? I have done literally all I could, exception taking the computer apart.

Which MacBook Pro is best for me?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:05 PM PDT

I'm planning to get a 13-inch MacBook Pro soon but I'm running into two problems: the RAM and the number of Thunderbolt ports.

I'm debating between the 8GB and 16GB RAM but I'm not sure what's enough for me. I run Adobe CC programs with anywhere between 10 to 30 Chrome tabs in the background. I play games on my laptop, but not that often.

Also, is 2 Thunderbolt ports enough? I usually have my laptop charging while having USBs connected to my laptop... Feel like it could be enough but again, I'm not quite sure.

    macbook pro or air?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:54 AM PDT

hi! i'm gonna start studying computer science this fall and am looking into buying a laptop that will last me 5 years at least. i think i've narrowed it down to the macbook air i5/16gb/256gb or the macbook pro i5/16gb/256, but if a cheaper macbook air would do pls let me know lmao

i'm guessing what i will be using it for is matlab, programming, writing essays etc. i also already have a separate gaming pc to do all that stuff on and my uni has beefy computers for heavier assignments as well :-)

Pro Apps Edu Bundle delivery question

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:54 PM PDT

Do any of you have experience buying the edu bundle? Are the codes for each app exclusive to your Apple ID that you used to purchase the bundle?

I'm wondering because I already have Logic, but I wanna get final cut and main stage and it's cheaper to just buy the edu bundle since I'm a student. But I'm wondering if I'd be able to give that logic code to someone else because I obviously don't need 2 different logic licenses.

Again are the codes just like a typically redeemable code for each individual app that can be redeemed on any Apple ID or just the one linked to my email?

    Thanks

Battery Life After Catalina 10.15.5 Update

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:56 AM PDT

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I've had my 13in MBP since December 2019 and haven't had any problems with it. But after recently updating to Catalina 10.15.5 in early June, I noticed that my battery life was draining significantly faster (it'd drain 1-2% every 5 minutes while watching YouTube). Even light tasks like writing in Drafts or Bear seemed to drain it fairly quickly.

I had recently taken to using new apps over the past couple months, and had just figured that my use of things background apps like Alfred, Spectacle, Mega Cloud Storage, Google Backup, etc. had impacted the battery.

However, after disabling all of these background apps, I continue to notice fast drain (I use Chrome and Brave, and I know they can be energy hogs but I've been using Chrome since December so I didn't think that was the issue).

I'm guessing that the new battery health feature in 10.15.5 has had something to do with this. From what I've read, it didn't exist before the update, and it intentionally reduces peak capacity as the battery ages.

    Any thoughts?

2019 15" MacBook Pro Keyboard Durability question

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 01:06 PM PDT

I have ordered a Amazon renewed Macbook Pro 15inch from 2019. This is my first mac. As a Windows peasant (sorry) I have been spending time educating myself on MacOS, the hardware, the community, etc. I'm actually very excited to get my new computer in a couple of days. I have a few questions however, At the time I ordered I did not know anything about the "butterfly switch fiasco" and now that I've heard about it I'm a little concerned. My questions are:

    1. Without Apple-Fan bias, how big of a problem is this? Apple Insider claims it's a very minor issue affecting hardly anyone but then Youtubers and some Redditors seem to talk about it like it totally ruins every mac produced in recent years and you are better off using an Apple IIc for your work. I'm curios how the keyboards have held up thus far.

    2. I saw Apple has a program to fix broken keyboards. How long will they be running this? If my keyboards dies 5 or even 8 years from now will they still fix it?

    3. If you have experience using the repair program how was it? And are the keyboards they are replacing the old ones with better in any way (from a durability standpoint). I don't want to replace a keyboard every three years. I buy computers with the intent to run them as long as I can and with how much this thing cost I hope to get at least 8-10 years out of it.

    4. I hear people saying that typing on the butterfly switches is worse than being crucified on a cross made of poison ivy and the new macbook pro has a keyboard that makes your fingers feel like God himself has blessed them. Is it really that bad? I feel like Apple, who is so concerned with "the experience," wouldn't ship a keyboard that bad.

TLDR: First time Mac buyer who just heard about Butterfly issues that will affect the computer he just spent most of a month's pay on. How boned am I?

    Thank you.

MBP 16" burnt usb's from connecting it to a samsung 43" monitor. Why?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:49 AM PDT

    Hello!

I plugged in my MBP in an ultra wide monitor and it worked fine for a while, but then I couldn't charge it and the usb's stopped working alltogether. The notebook was under high load and the fans were spinning crazy, but that happens usually as I use it for intensive tasks. The monitor still works fine though. I used the original samsung usb-c cable for the connection.

My question is why did this happen? And how can I avoid it? I'm afraid of using the monitor with a macbook pro now, yet that's why I got this monitor. Thank you!

    MBP 13" 2020 4ports - Display too sharp

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:27 AM PDT

    Hi,

just switched 2020 13" mbp for 2015 mpb 13". The screen looks too sharp (with artefact around high contrast objects). My GF has 2018 model and looks much smoother. Any way how to disable/enable? I have tried font smoothing (no difference).

EDIT: Looks like default screen resolution is not native (one lower does not have this problem). But still on 2018 the problem is not that visible.

    Thx.

Docking Station + External Hard Drive?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:17 AM PDT

    Hey All,

I am hoping someone can point me in the direction of a reliable external hard drive / docking station combo. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports). The limitations of storage and external ports are hurting my efficiency a bit. I am looking for some sort of docking station and external hard drive combo. Ideally I'd be able to connect HDMI and USB to the dock. I bought a dock from Hyper which is frankly a POS, it has tons of connectivity issues. Thank you!

    2010 MacBook Pro Ram

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:59 AM PDT

I bought a used 2010 13inch MacBook pro (MacBook pro 7.1) for a 100€, I wanted to upgrade it to 16gb of ram but I can only find 2x 4gb sticks of high quality at 1066mhz, except for the cheap timetec ones from Amazon which I don't want to use because I'm afraid they would fail pretty quickly Anyone has any recommendations as to where I could find good brand ddr3 1066mhz 2x 8gb sticks ?

Would it be worth adding more RAM to a 2011 Air?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:48 AM PDT

I have recently inherited a 2011 Macbook Air w/ 1.7ghz i5, and 4GB RAM. It runs ok. Kinda slow at times, but does most of the stuff I need it to do. I convert VHS tapes on the side for friends and neighbors and I've been using it for this, and it seems to do pretty well. It bogs down a little at times, but works well enough. Of course it's coming up on 10 years old and it won't update past 10.13 High Sierra.

Just curious if it might be worth adding more RAM, or if at this point it's so old it won't really make any meaningful difference.

    Is this normal?

So I was about to replace the battery in my 15" MacBook Pro 2013 when I came across what appears to be something that has leaked on the SSD? Not sure how long it's been like this as I've not experienced any problems while using it but should I replace it? Thanks.

    £1799 Vs £1299 models

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 03:36 AM PDT

I'm looking at buying a macbook pro and I was wondering (Aside from cost) what the main difference between these 2 models is? Aside from the number of ports and the CPU, what else justifies this near £500 difference? Does the more expensive model have a better GPU?
