Why is working with images in iMessage on MacOS so awful?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 06:15 AM PDT

Things that never seem to work for me:

    • Sending images. If I send an image, it shows up as a "Tap to download" thing for the recipients that never works. Doesn't matter if I import, copy/paste, drag/drop, any image I try to send simply doesn't work. Instead, I have to copy the image, continuity paste it via an iOS device, and then it works. Same thing with files. It just doesn't work, unless it's coming from an iOS device.

    • When you receive an image, you can't zoom in on it! It only seems to download this tiny low-res version. I have a QHD (1440p) monitor. Most of the images I receive appear like little postage stamps. I can't double click. I can't pinch to zoom. If I right click and click "Quick Open," nothing happens. If I right click and click "Open", I get such a low-res version of it it looks like it was taken with a toaster oven. WHY?!

    • Don't even get me started on search!

It's like the APIs that iMessage for Mac uses to communicate with the servers are COMPLETELY different from those that the iOS version uses to communicate. The flow of continuity between devices is a big reason people even bother with the Apple ecosystem. Why is iMessage for Mac so... clunky and awful? Am I missing something?

    Stuck on 10.8.5

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:39 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Dug up my old Mac mini (late 2012) as Im giving my sister my MBA for her to continue college. Ive tried and researched through forums on bringing their Mountain Lion systems up to date. Been a long week and part of me just wants to go to my local Micro Center and have them (try) do it.

So Ive tried the installer downloaded through app store/ apple website for Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan. None worked. Catalina wont work as I need 10.9 to download it.

For each, I have changed the dates as I could not pass verification. Ran through 1 USB drive, One SSD and 2 HDD bootable drives. with installers of High Sierra, and Mojave on each. When I tried El Capitan, I called Apple support and they recommended I use High Sierra or Mojave as El Capitan has proven to be an issue with many other users.

I have also tried to run the High Sierra Patcher tool from Dosdude hoping that install would go different but its the same as the rest.

Lastly, cloned and installed a fresh Catalina OS on my SSD from my MBA. Then tried to boot the drive externally and internally with my Mac Mini not being able to boot the drive. No idea if that is or was a possible work around. Am I ignorant for that one?

What did get the installer to complete, (but not really) was to boot into safe mode and run the installer (Mojave, High Sierra). The only issue with this now was constant crashing and restarting on the black screen with the white progress bar. I left it running 2 different occasions, with one HDD and the SSD attempt overnight and during my work shift. Longest cycle I pushed through was 16 hours to no avail.

Currently I have learned about a log (Cmd + L) on the installer app. It seems all App store OS installers have failed at "Failed to verify InstallESDDmg.pkg: xar_verify failed" Tried to change dates and re run the installer but right now Iʻm just exhausted. Id like help verifying I did everything possible and correctly before I schedule an appointment to take it in to a service center. Appreciate if there are any questions or advice that I may have self inflicted with user error. I have patience to go and learn but no idea if Im over/underthinking things or fatigue from work is hindering my thought process.

how to remove books from collection in ibooks?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:56 PM PDT

I'm using Books on Catalina. I created a collection and dragged a bunch of books in to that collection. Now I've decided to remove some of the books from that collection. If I press delete, it asks me if I wanna delete that book from my harddrive. which is not what i want to do. i just wanna remove it from that particular collection. any way to do this without having to remake the collection again?

Downgrade to High Sierra from Catalina for better battery life?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 01:17 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I purchased a 2014 13 inch MacBook Pro that initially had Mavericks installed. After upgrading to Mojave/Catalina I noticed the battery life was significantly worse on these versions of macOS.

The laptop has ~600 battery cycles and the condition displays as normal. I have also changed all my options with pmset to optimize battery life to 5 hours or so.

If I want to squeeze more battery life out of this machine, should I try downgrading to High Sierra, or am I just better off doing a battery replacement at some point in the future?

Catalina: DiagnosticReports folders appeared on the root of my read-only partition

Catalina: DiagnosticReports folders appeared on the root of my read-only partition

I opened my MacOS disk this evening tp find a strange file structure sitting on the root of my system: /~beorn/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. My account's username is beorn, but this certainly isn't my home folder (which is still living at /Users/beorn like it should be). This appears to be a remnant of the recent Catalina security update, as the timestamp is from around the time that I installed it. I'm guessing that something in the update encountered an error and left behind this little treat for me after it had sent off its crash logs. The update appears to have applied correctly (although I'm not sure how to confirm that). There are no files in these folders, it appears to just be the folder hierarchy.

The main folder is owned by root, so I tried moving/deleting it from the Terminal as root, but found out that this folder structure lives on the read-only boot partition!

Somehow, this folder lives on the read-only boot partition.

Anyone know how I can remove these? Or seen anything similar? From what I understand, the read-only boot partition is immutable unless you're Apple…

One more cut in the Death of 1,000 Cuts. :-\

What do you use for backup instead of Time Machine?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:59 PM PDT

Recently upgraded to Catalina and encountered the fun situation of losing easy access to all my backups from the past 11 months via Time Machine. Now, to get at them, I have to go through Finder.

Between this and Time Machine's other legendary shenanigans, I'm finally calling it quits. I'm going to ditch my creaky Time Capsule while I'm at it and build a dedicated NAS backup.

But that leaves the question of backup software. I'd like something simple, as I have non-computer literate people in my home to support and they'll need to use it, but if possible fairly powerful. Can anyone recommend something?

Screen Sharing via iMessage not working?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:54 AM PDT

Hey folks, here's yet again me with a another problem in macOS. Recently I tried to figure out, how I can use the screen-sharing feature that is supposed to be included into macOS/iOS via iMessage. I tried several of my friends so far which have iPhones iPads and MacBooks, none of them would work, some were at some completely different region, some were inside the same WiFi. I always get this error message saying " "Name" could not be resolved." (originally it's in German, so it might not be what would actually show up in English) Anyway, tried to google it, found nothing, so I turn to you, trusted redditors!

What would happen if I tried to Erase the Internal Hard Drive via Disk Utility? Asking for a friend.

What would happen if I tried to Erase the Internal Hard Drive via Disk Utility? Asking for a friend.

I'm curious what would happen at this point if I clicked "Erase?" I have no intentions of doing so, but I'm wondering if there is a fail-safe to prevent the device from erasing the drive it boots from? Also trying assure my friend that when he is re-formatting external drives, he doesn't need to worry about accidentally erasing the internal drive.

    DiscordApp Issue - Catalina

    DiscordApp Issue - Catalina

Hi everyone! Not sure if I should post this here or not...I hope here, I hope someone can help. I'm on a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running Catalina (10.15.5). I have been using Discord (http://discordapp.com/) on this machine since I inherited it over a year ago. Catalina is new, but Discord's worked up until today, when I get the following error.

    Discordapp Javascript Error

I have tried everything I can think of: uninstalling/reinstalling Discord, reinstalling the macOS (without wiping the computer, which I'm trying to avoid), checking for viruses/malware, and re-installing Javascript. I've also tried a google search, but most of my results came back for PC. Anyone have any thoughts on how to resolve this? I'm stumped and frustrated.

VMware Fusion - older MacOS Version?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 12:34 PM PDT

    Hi all -

I'm currently running Mojave, and haven't upgraded to Catalina yet as I run a few 32 bit apps. However, especially with WWDC on the horizon, I'm thinking it's finally time to upgrade to Catalina.

I have a license to VMware Fusion that I use on my Bootcamp partition to run Windows Excel; a few questions:

    1. is it possible to do something similar to run an older version of MacOS in a VM For the few applications I have left that are 32 Bit?
    2. Will this be so resource-intensive that it's not worth it?
    3. What version of MacOS would be the most "efficient" to virtualize in this manner? E.g. which would balance the right tradeoffs between older (so less demanding of RAM) vs. newer (so more efficiently developed, etc)

Thanks for the help! (Crossposting to r/vmware and r/MacOS)

Seagate External HDD not working anymore in my Macos

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:43 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have an external drive Seagate that stopped working today. So far I didn't find any solution for my problem. I tried to reset SMC and NVRAM, started in safe mode and still, neither Finder nor Disk Utility can see the HDD. I used another cable and nothing. Then I tested another HDD with both USB cable and it worked. So, I ruled out the cables have problem. Lastly I plugged it and open System Information and checked USB and the HDD was found there, SN and current consumption displayed. I tried one or another recovery app but they are to recover files in a found HDD. I also used Terminal and "diskutil list" didn't show it.

I'd like to ask for advice. What could I do next? Is there any app (MacOS Catalina) that finds and connects to the HDD? I will reach Seagate support on Monday, but in the meantime, if there is something that I could do to retrieve my files, I want to try.

MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 drastical battery drain.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 02:53 AM PDT

Yesterday, I updated my Early 2015 Macbook Pro to MacOS Catalina 10.15.5. My battery has been draining drastically even with light internet browsing which didn't happen on 10.15.4. I still could get 7-8 hours of use, now it doesn't even last for more than 2-3 hours. I don't have the button for Battery Health Management on my battery preferences aswell although it was available for a very short time but then it disappeared. I know it only supports Mac with Thunderbolt 3. I rebooted the whole system and the problem still persists. Anyone experienced same problems with their Mac machines and any remedies? Thanks.

Any way to disable bluetooth keyboard from going into low-power or sleep mode?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:07 AM PDT

I have a Satechi keyboard that uses bluetooth, and usually after about 10~15 minutes goes into a "low-power"/sleep mode, so when I come back, I have to hit a key and wait a few seconds before it reconnects. I've tried resetting the bluetooth module on the MBP (2020 13" model) and the more general hard disconnect/re-connect from the Bluetooth control panel. I have a feeling it's the keyboard itself and not macOS but I figure if someone knows of a setting I can adjust it's worth a shot. Thanks!
