    Anyway to upgrade to Catalina without going straight to Catalina 10.15.5. I would like to get Xcode but don't want the newer 10.15.5 update heard bad things.

    Why are all external drives shared over AFP when I haven't selected them?

    I have only added one folder on my desktop to be shared in: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing but when I connect to the afp address I don't see the folder I have selected to be shared and instead all the external drives I have connected to my mac - any ideas?

    I've read that a keyboard cover on a macbook might damage the screen in the long run, does a dbrand skin on the trackpad do the same?

    If I look at a book or article in the finder in 3-column view, I see:

    • By default the cover for epub, an uninformative icon for mobi, by defalt the first page for pdf, etc.

    • The file name.

    • The file size.

    • By default, the quick actions menu.

    I can use Preview preferences to add a few others, such as:

    • Pdf encoding info, which is useful for e-reader compatibility.

    • Where from for epub and mobi, but this keeps disappearing, and isn't an option for pdf.

    If I import the file into Calibre, the metadata may include a book description. However, it takes a lot of typing to sort out other metadata, and it takes a lot of pre-processing to sort out pdf compatibility issues. I also have repetitive stress injuries. So I don't import right away, especially if I'm not sure if I'll need a free article.

    Is there a finder hack or a finder substitute which can show this info without importing into Calibre?

    [Catalina] Need to find out what was edited/deleted from Notes

    I have a note and content was edited/deleted, which is list of emails.

    It's not iCloud synced and just on my Mac. I know that things like Google Docs allow you to see the history of edits, and I was wondering if such thing exists.

    Mostly every video/image isn’t loading on my MacBook some of the pictures turn green when I click onto them can’t find anything about this online. Anybody know what it is ?

    Macbook not launching new apps

    So at first I thought it was an issue only with Chrome because I know I messed around with the version numbers and chrome driver and what not. I downloaded Tor earlier today and after installing it to launch, it gets stuck just jumping in the launch bar just like Chrome does.

    I have checked my privacy/firewall settings but they seem to be in order. Would love suggestions as to what else could be causing this error?

    iCloud Documents/Desktop folder sync when wiping a device

    I have 2 Macs, both with iCloud Documents/Desktop folder syncing enabled. This means I have the same files on both computers in these respective folders (and all of them are downloaded, local on both devices). I am going to wipe the first device, where all the files were actually created and originally stored. If I do this, will all the files be deleted as I am intentionally deleting the contents of the computer that originally created the files in the first place?

    I want to wipe the first computer while leaving the synced and downloaded Desktop/Documents folders from iCloud on the 2nd computer fully intact.

    Edit for simplicity: I have file A in Documents folder of Computer 1, I told iCloud to sync the Documents folder containing file A to Computer 2. If I wipe Computer 1's hard drive, will file A still be on Computer 2?

    At My Wits End! How Do I Correct "CCLOUD Quit Unexpectedly" Error?! Started about 3 months ago. Happens several times a day. I've made no OS upgrades or installed new software in over 6 months. Logging out of iCloud and back in does nothing to fix this.

    CrashLog creates unexpected folder

    I recently reported a crash on my machine to Apple and it created a new folder on my machine with the report.

    Instead of placing the log files in my actual User account folder it created a new folder at the root and named it ~myusername, which can't be deleted.

    Any thoughts why the log was placed there, or how to remove it?

    Quality MagSafe replacement for USB C

    Recently upgraded to a 2020 MBP and missing the convenience and security of the MagSafe. I am aware there are a variety of options out there some seem dodgy and quality questionable. With that mind, do any of you out there use MagSafe replacements and if so which ones would you recommend? Otherwise feel free to dissuade me.

    macOS Catalina update, my screen has turned purple violet

    If you don't want to reboot in Recovery Mode to access /System/Library ; you can gain write access by executing in the terminal: 

    mount -uw / killall Finder

    What is "com.80pct.FreedomHelper"?!

    After a recent update to 10.15.5, I get this message every time after I restart my Mac. It does not close unless I click "open". If I click cancel, it reopens the window indefinitely. It says I downloaded that file on 15. April 2019. I did not download anything of that kind. And even if I downloaded something, why is it showing up now?

    Any Ideas?

    Restart + D not working

    Hello all, first time posting here.

    So I've a mac mini 2012, and while a faithful machine it's needs care.

    it's been lagging and slow etc - so I'm going to try install a SSD drive (which is a different worry)

    however I can't get it to restart with D, so I can do a hardware test.

    I'm on Catalina if that is an issue.

    I've tried several times with just a keyboard and mouse and electric connection plugged in and it just either hangs on black screen for 40+ mins or reload and go back to log in screen.

    Is that proof itself of a hardworn hardware?

    Random .plist files and log file showing up in my Applications folder

    So I randomly got .plist files and a .log file that popped up in my applications folder. DistributionSummary.plist ExportOptions.plist and packaging.log. I was wondering if anyone knows why they would get inserted in there randomly and if they can be safely deleted

    Wifi keeps disconnecting after updating to Catalina 10.15.5

    I updated to MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019) yesterday and ever since I've been experiencing this problem where the Wifi gets disconnected for no apparent reason. It's not that Wifi gets turned off. Wifi is still on but it gets disconnected from the network I'm currently connected to. I need to manually reconnect to the network or turn off and turn on the Wifi to regain the connection. I tried forgetting the network and connecting again but it did not help. Anybody else having the same issue?

    Did MacOS 10.15.5 break the softwareupdate --fetch-full-version command?

    My searching yielded very little, so forgive me if I missed the cause or a resolution...

    Short version is our enterprise has a software restriction holding us to 10.14.6 for a subset of our users. I attempted earlier to download a full installer using the following command in Terminal:

    softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 10.14.6

    This normally works, but when I attempted it from multiple 10.15.5 Macs, and received the following error:

    Downloading and installing 10.14.6 installer

    SUPreferenceManager: Failed to set object of class: __NSCFConstantString for key: LastRecommendedMajorOSBundleIdentifier with error: Error Domain=SUPreferenceManagerErrorDomain Code=1 "(null)"

    I was able to successfully run the command from a 10.15 Mac that wasn't fully updated yet, but I need a copy of it in a remote location, and our interoffice connection is painfully slow. I was hoping to download it directly at that datacenter, but the only Catalina machine I have there has already been updated.

    Is there a new syntax for this command in 10.15.5, or did they deprecate it or something? Anybody else seeing this?

    Clicking on the desktop doesn't switch focus to Finder

    This morning I noticed a weird issue that when I click on the desktop area, it doesn't shift the focus to the Finder application. Anybody have this same issue and/or know how to solve it? I'm on macOS Catalina 10.15.5, but can't say for sure if the point update or the supplemental security update caused the problem. 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro w/ TouchBar

    Stuck on validating packages

    Hi, wasn't sure if this is the right place to put this, but my installation of a package is currently just sitting at validating packages and not moving. It's been like this for around 15 min. Does anyone have any clue of what to do? I can't quit it, I can't stop it, and I don't want to do something that'd break the computer. It was fine until now.

    Edit: never mind it was doing that because Teams decided to start automatically and update. It's kinda creepy how it does that and has its own user on my computer.

    Disable browser cache by piping entries to /dev/null?

    I'm looking for a way to "disable" a browser's cache (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) and thought it may be doable by piping cache entries into /dev/null. Is there a way to redirect anything that would normally go into the cache folder, into /dev/null? I read something about /dev/null not supporting folders, so I also thought I may be able to symlink the cache folder to /dev/null? Are either of these possible?
