My workflow for academic writing on the iPad

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 11:31 AM PDT

Search, archive, annotate pdf papers with Bookends https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bookends/id739087947 . I also tried Zotero in a webpage, and Paper Ship https://apps.apple.com/app/papership/id631980748 to manage my Zotero collection, but I prefer Bookends because it includes also search and pdf download (and it can do nice tricks with its programmable Ezproxy command which uses DOI as a parameter) and can easily output temporary citations in Pandoc format.

Write in markdown with IA writer (but any markdown editor should do). Insert temporary citations from Bookends in Pandoc citation format.

To generate bibliography on iPad, I've discovered I can use Pandoc. How? Enter UTM https://getutm.app, an emulator that can be sideloaded in various ways (I use appdb pro). In UTM I have a Debian filesystem with graphics and a shared folder with the iPad filesystem; I installed pandoc and pandoc-citeproc.

In order to finalize the bibliography section, I copy to the shared directory my IA writer manuscript (markdown), the references collection exported from Bookends in BibTxt format (needs a .bib extension) and the appropriate csl journal style file from zotero.org/styles. This is enough to generate a docx file from the manuscript with bibliography added. Also pdf can be obtained but I didn't try yet. Find the appropriate Pandoc command in https://www.simonlindgren.com/notes/2019/11/15/setup-for-writing-in-markdown-citing-with-zotero-and-publishing-with-pandoc .

    And that's it.

    Next Budget end iPad rumors?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 11:35 AM PDT

    (TLDR close to the end)

So currently the two real rumorsrumors we have about an iPad 8th generation that I can easily find are, 1. The A12 processor and 2. A 10.8 inch display.

The A12 sounds normal and expected as the A13 is likely going to be considered "too new" for the budget end iPad, and while my 7th gen iPad runs perfectly fine for what I need it to do it would've been nice to see the A11 (which my iPhone X has and I bought it almost 2 years ago) since the iPad 6th gen also had a A10 chip. Either way it's a pretty standard like, we expect this sure whatever kind of rumor.

However the rumor for a 10.8 inch display instead of 10.2 strikes me differently because they just upped it from a 9.7 inch to 10.2 last year. Your telling me that we are getting another screen size increase a year after we got our very first screen size increase? Not only that but we just got smart connectors on the regular iPad. Given it's the "1st generation" version of the smart connector. So while most accessory's from the iPad Air lineup could work (as in the smart keyboard) Logitech made their own custom Smart Keyboard case, twice for the 10.2 inch iPad. One without a trackpad and one with a trackpad. Unfortunately both of these have form factors specifically for the 10.2 inch iPad. Meaning that if we got a 10.8 inch iPad that has the exact same bezels we'll be looking at need brand new accessories, either because Apple will transition to the new iPad smart connectors or because the size is different which can make some of those accessories not work.

Now this doesn't really matter to Apple too much because they do stuff like this all the time. However with rumors of a iPad Pro design coming to the iPad Air line, would it make sense to bring that to the 8th gen iPad? Obviously with some limitations such as a non-laminated display still, no faceID but under the screen Touch ID seems unlikely so maybe some odd version of Touch ID? If not then maybe FaceID will come? I doubt it but still. It won't be a 120HZ OLED display but probably same specs as the current display just larger and with no home button? Or the option is making the bezels way smaller all around but leave the home button where it is. Which could theoretically work but seems unlikely.

It all seems odd but my ideal situation is one of the two. 1. They create and all screen display and leave the footprint of the device the same allowing backwards compatibility with previous generation cases and hardware such as the Logitech trackpad case. 2. Since I haven't bought anything they can redesign the iPad and Logitech (or Apple if they make it only $150 which is laughable) design a brand new trackpad case that is just as good or better than the current tech and obviously isn't overly expensive as this is a budget laptop alternative.

My Plan and reasoning for wondering, it's not that important so feel free to skip

So I luckily haven't bought any expensive cases for my iPad because I was waiting on the trackpad case and by the time that launched and I was ready to get it I saw these rumors and also realized that 32GB might not be enough for what I want to do with a school iPad (that I would use to type with on the go) although iCloud and the cloud services my school uses makes it fine, if the base storage was also to go up I'd more than likely want to get one of these new iPads. If it doesn't but the new feature set is amazing and the same body is kept then I think I'll still plan on getting one with more storage. That being said it'd be nice to have 64GB be the base option but I doubt that will happen, and really I like the current trackpad design from Logitech and I don't know if they'll ever launch a brand new one for the 10.8 inch iPad because they spent lots of time working on the current one I'm sure and they'll be bothered by that. I would want to replace my current iPad with the brand new one at least by Christmas with a keyboard case, but if that doesn't happen if a new iPad with an A12 and a all screen display happens I'll likely still get it and wait around for a case to happen.

TLDR: Current rumors point to a 10.8 inch budget iPad with a A12 chip. A12 is a no brained while 10.8 seems a bit odd to me. There are no indicators it means an all screen display and seems unlikely so it more than likely could mean a redesign for the second year in a row after the first screen size change and new connector added. Ideas that would make me happy are an "all screen" design with cheaper screen tech but the same aluminum body meaning all other accessories would still work but then where is touchID? They probably won't use faceID. When will it be launched, I would guess the same time frame.

What do you guys think? I just think it'd be a bit odd for Apple to release a bigger iPad two years in a row, and completely redesign it so new accessories are needed. I mean it's the budget iPad so if someone did want to upgrade they'd almost have to start all over. Any other ideas for what this rumor could mean? Or if it's even likely? Let me know what you think!

    Basics of iPad drawing?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:52 AM PDT

I've recently received 2019 iPad Air 10.5" and an Apple Pencil as a gift, and I'd like to get into drawing, but I have no idea where to start. I've never done digital or non-digital art, so for someone like me with no art experience, what are the best apps to draw with? And where should I learn? Is there a good YouTube series or book I could learn from? Thanks so much!

Edit: Thank you for the advice, everyone :)

Thoughts on North 60w charging kit from costco

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:35 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Picked up the 12.9 iPad Pro a couple weeks ago and loving it so far!

Came across this charging kit deal from Costco, do you guys have any thoughts on it? Didn't see the brand when I searched the subreddit but I'm generally happy with Products that Costco sells. The 10ft cable is super appealing.

In addition I have the 11 pro and Apple Watch series 5 that may use it.

So it turns out that you can now view YouTube videos in 4K 60fps.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:53 PM PDT

But is this only limited to YouTube, can iTunes download 4K videos now?

I ask this because you can buy 4K versions of movies for use on the Apple TV 4K.

Edit: in the iOS 14 beta.

Edit 2: guys having 4K isn't the main point, this means that 1440p playback should be possible.

    Wired Keyboard AND monitor?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Hello everyone, so I have an iPad mini 5th gen and I'd like to hook it up to my monitor and my wired keyboard, but I can't seem to find an adapter that would allow me to use both USB and HDMI. Does such and adaptor exist or am I going to have to buy a Bluetooth keyboard and the the HDMI adaptor? Thanks for any advice!

    Recommendations regarding keyboard choices

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:34 AM PDT

Hello! I had recently ordered an IPad Pro 12.9" in the mail and am awaiting for it to come in in a couple weeks. In the meantime, I have been feverishly trying to decide on a case/keyboard.

Let me preface by explaining my situation: I am a student currently in summer classes and expect to be doing plenty of back and forth travel to university. I don't expect to be typing on the iPad for more than 2 hours a day, on average. I have a computer at home that's generally used for writing essays and what not. I intend to use the iPad more out of a keyboard than in it, although having a keyboard available would be optimal.

I've narrowed it down to three options and I was hoping to get some more input from the community as to what the best option may be:

Option one: Apple Magic Keyboard. The highest price point of my choices. Seems like it has excellent build quality, and amazing trackpad as well as additional charge port and smart connector, but it seems like it's more based for stationary usage compared to lap use (I could be wrong however)

Option two: Logitech Slim Folio Pro case. Rings in at $170CAD, over half the cost cheaper than the MK. Seems the most promising as it provides decent protection and has a very solid keyboard as well as more flexibility for leisurely activities compared to the Magic Keyboard. Additionally, also has a more secure spot for the Apple Pencil

Option three: Otterbox Symmetry Series 360 case. The lowest price point of the three simply because it does not have a keyboard, but would be alleviated by purchase of wireless keyboard. There's more pieces involved but I figure it's a viable option if paired with a mouse as well.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Free/cheap PDF utility app

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:10 AM PDT

I'm looking for a PDF utility app that lets me do basic manipulation of PDFs. Things like compressing file sizes, reordering and deleting pages, etc.

However, I can't seem to find a PDF utility app that's not in the $100-$150/year range. I subscribe to plenty of apps but there's just no way I can justify that for an app I'll likely only use a few times a month.

(I know there are web apps that do this but I'm working with personal documents that I'd rather not send off to a cloud service that I don't know anything about.)

    Anyone have any app recommendations?

    Magic Keyboard stuck key

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:52 AM PDT

Has anybody else experienced stuck keys with the new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro? It does not register a keystroke on the right side of the apostrophe key, it feels heavier and there is no click sound.

Is it possible to take key caps off the Magic Keyboard or should I take this to Apple to repair? I bought the product from a 3rd party so do not have an Apple receipt.

UPDATE Yes, the key caps do come off and go back on with a little bit of coaxing. You have to hold the key with your fingernails at both sides, about 3/4 of the way up and pull back. Then just push and scream for 20 minutes and it will fix itself.

    Help with ipad Keynote

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:14 AM PDT

Hi, I'm totally new to ipad keynote. I did make a nice enough slide with drawing and animation and motion path etc. Now I want to draw on the slides while presenting. Which, I found out how to do. (Press+hold slide for the drawing menu to pop up.) But, how do you draw a shape during presentation? I saw a video (of screen record of presentation) where the presenter drew a graph, and the axes were snapping to the points. He could even select the line and shift it around slightly till it fit whatever he was talking about. Do I need something extra for keynote?
