Mail App opening randomly in fullscreen Posted: 19 May 2020 02:55 PM PDT I've been using MacOS for a little while now and I'm absolutely loving it! But I'm experiencing a problem where my Mail App is opening randomly in fullscreen Mode sometimes. For example when I'm watching a YouTube video in fullscreen, suddenly my app opens in splitscreen view (on the right side). Is that a common problem? Any known way to fix it? [link] [comments]
Notes app in Catalina - scroll position Posted: 20 May 2020 01:39 AM PDT Can someone who's using Catalina tell me whether the Notes app remembers the scroll position of a note? I.e. you've scrolled down a note, then go to another note, then come back to the first one and it's still scrolled down to the same position it was before? I'm still on High Sierra and on here Notes doesn't remember the scroll position, which is starting to get annoying... So hoping they've added this feature to a newer version. Thanks! Weird text file found in root directory Posted: 19 May 2020 07:49 PM PDT I just found this strange text file called "%A1%84%A1" in the root directory and I don't know where it came from. It contains a very short bit of XML: The file is owned by root, only has Does anyone have a clue where this came from? Is there any tutorials or courses available to help me gain a better understanding of my Mac? Posted: 19 May 2020 08:27 PM PDT Hi, I'm looking for any help to gain a better understanding of how my Mac works. I am basically computer illiterate and whenever the smallest thing goes wrong I'm completely in the dark. The more I google and ask questions the more confused I become. I want to gain a basic understanding of the system so that if something goes wrong I at least have SOME idea of how to begin to troubleshoot. When I look at system folders I want to know what they are for and how and why they play a role in how my Mac operates. I want to understand file types and just how to be more tech savvy in general. If anyone has any tips or suggestions of websites, blogs, courses, videos, books etc could be helpful I would greatly appreciate it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 May 2020 02:19 AM PDT Hi, Anyone knows what the 'deleted' process does and why it sometimes creates high CPU loads? Sometimes runs at 15 to 35%. But yesterday it even made the fan spin ridiculously high, due to +90% CPU usage for a long period. I killed the process. But it came up again. I've rebooted, but it keeps coming up and keeps having that high CPU usage. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Keep twitch mini-player always on top in safari Posted: 20 May 2020 01:22 AM PDT Hi. I use Safari to watch Twitch streams and would like to pin the mini-player to the top of my screen, while I do something else. Is this achievable? [link] [comments]
CMD + Tab switched alternative to MacOS build one? Posted: 19 May 2020 04:11 AM PDT The main issue with MacOS build one compared to windows is that if i have two apps opened sometimes it also switches to Finder that does not have any windows open. Or i have to press tab twice which is sometimes annoying because if i quickly do CMD+Tab to switch to previous program it switches to Finder. So looking for alternative [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 May 2020 02:12 PM PDT Hello, everyone. I am dealing with an infuriating problem: I bought a Philips 276C8 monitor for my aging MacBook Air Mid-2013. I use a Belkin 4K MiniDP>HDMI adapter + HDMI cable to connect the two. The monitor's native resolution of 2560x1440 works wonderfully... On Windows in Bootcamp. When I boot to MacOS X, the monitor gets stuck on 1080p and there is no way of changing it. I tried holding Option key when clicking on "Scaled", I tries "Detect Displays", I tried zapping PRAM, heck, I even tried SwitchResX, all to no avail. I know this must be a dumb software problem since everything works under BootCamp, so I am wondering if anyone has a solution or a fix I could try. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
iCloud Drive only has 5 GB of storage but takes up 10 GB of storage on my hard drive? Posted: 19 May 2020 09:36 PM PDT I use an old macbook pro from ~2015 and never upgraded my iCloud storage, so it just has 5 GB of old junk files. However when I check my system storage, it says my iCloud drive is using 10 GB. How is that even possible when it can only hold 5 GB? Is there a way to remove all of the iCloud files off my hard drive? I have "Optimize Mac storage" checked too but I don't really notice it making a difference. [link] [comments]

I'm hoping something lime fn + F1 but I haven't been able to figure it out. Please let me know how to do this or if theirs a resource for stuff like this. Thanks! [link] [comments]

The headache of dealing with PDF's Posted: 19 May 2020 08:41 PM PDT I want to share my experience in trying to do what I thought would be a very basic task: filling out and signing a document on my Macbook running Catalina 10.15.4. I ended up having to go through multiple hoops that progressively made me more and more astonished at the sheer difficulty and complexity of what should be one of the most simple and straightforward tasks one could do on a computer. The forms I wanted to fill out and sign are several government forms in PDF format that I've downloaded from their website. In some of the fields, a "wet ink" signature is required. For that, I signed my signature on a paper using a black ink pen, scanned it, and saved it as a JPEG image. I would have expected the process to be extremely simple because, when it comes down to it, all that needs to be done is write a few words in fields and paste an image of the signature onto the printable document's "sign here" field. This is equivalent to printing out the forms and completing them by hand. But there are several advantages of doing this on a computer instead. It saves paper. It doesn't necessitate having a working printer. And it saves time because there is no need to reprint and rewrite entire pages when small errors are made. I was using Preview and/or looking for free software to do this, because it is not something that in my opinion deserves a purchase. If I can print out the PDF and complete it by hand without having to pay anyone anything, then I should be able to complete it digitally for free. Moreover, since the government uses the PDF format for their downloadable documents, there should be no requirement to purchase expensive third party software to do something it expects all of its citizens to do, frequently. Also, I should note that Windows does have free software to do this easily. But still this is dangerous; access to government documents that may contain peoples' sensitive information/financial information is given to third party software. They may not have privacy policies that protects peoples' sensitive information. So I go ahead with this by using Apple's Preview program: On Chrome, I go to the relevant government website. Clicking on the link to view the document, Chrome opens the PDF document. The fields look editable. So my first instinct was to just start filling it out on Chrome. So that's what I did. I made some progress by filling out some fields, and then downloaded the document to complete it later. Opening the saved PDF later, I was shocked to find that none of my edits were saved. I figured that this could be a Chrome issue, so decided to open it in Preview instead. It also did not display the changed fields I had filled out. That's strange, but I didn't waste that much time (yet), so I decided to just start editing from the start in Preview. I open the document in Preview to fill out a few fields. As soon as I enter text into a field, Preview notifies me with "the original document can't be changed, so a duplicate document has been created". I was surprised, why would it need to duplicate the document to just enter text into a fillable field? But I proceed. After filling out some more fields, I try to save it. But it gives this error: "The document X could not be saved as X". This didn't make sense to me. Why did Preview create a duplicate then? Frustrated, I ask my friend if she dealt with this before. She recommended a solution to this: I have to click the Print button, and at the bottom left corner of the Print popup box, I have to click on: "save as pdf". This makes no sense and is stupid. Why do I need to resave the PDF document in PDF format? Nonetheless, it worked. It removed all the "fillable" fields, however. So what I had to do to fill out the fields is to open the Markup Toolbar in Preview and enter Text Boxes, and drag each text box to a field's position and fill it out with the answer. A slower and more annoying process that being able to select each individual field and fill it out. It is as if I am editing/writing over an image of what the PDF document originally was. There was no added benefit at all to the document being a PDF compared to if it was just in, say, JPEG image format. Also, it would have taken me hours to figure this trick out without the quick advice I received. But who's to say that she didn't spend hours figuring that stuff out herself. Now it came down to signing the document. Since Preview's markup tool allows entering/drawing shapes onto the PDF document, and even coloring them, I expected to be able to merely open the JPEG scanned signature, copy it, and paste it onto the PDF. Instead, I was greeted by Apple's iconic "boop" sound. The paste operation is not permitted. It is also grayed out under Edit. It cannot be done. Doing some researching online, I found multiple useless Apple representatives on the Apple forums such as this one who completely fail to even understand what the problem IS, before saying that pasting cannot be done. Annoyed, I figure if I can just convert this jinxed document to an ACTUAL image (in image format), I would finally be allowed to paste and resize the signature on top of it. Fortunately, Preview does have the option to export the PDF document in other formats. I tried JPEG. Unfortunately, only the first page of the document got exported as a JPEG image. I figured that maybe it is because I didn't highlight all the pages prior to exporting. So I highlighted each page and tried again, but STILL only the first page was converted as a JPEG image. I thought about just converting each individual page into a separate image file, and keeping them organized in a folder for each document, but since the number of pages and forms I have are numerous, I decided not to. So, frustrated, I once again do some research online. Countless threads (especially the ones on Apple forums) are utterly useless. But eventually, I stumble upon this thread on Stack Exchange where someone provides a workaround. Apparently, exporting in Preview as PNG (instead of JPEG) format allows all pages to be converted in one go, for some reason. I can paste my signature onto each sign field! It worked!! Thank god and thanks that user who provided that workaround. I have no idea how he figured it out, but he deserves an award. Additionally, with this workaround, Preview can export the PNG back to PDF format, allowing, for example, online submissions of PDF documents, for those looking for a way to do that without paying an arm and a leg to Adobe essentially for a software functionality that could be created by a few senior undergraduate students working on a capstone project as part of a programming class. The entire process of figuring out HOW to fill out the forms took hours. This is unacceptable. Charging money (and a lot of it) just to be able to fill out fields in a form is preposterous and insulting to the intelligence of everyone who uses technology. It is also insulting to the great repositories of free, open source software released over the last decades whose functionality, performance, capability, and elegance make Adobe's software products look like a three year old's play-dough castle that they accidentally vomited on, and their profit hungry protectionist and monopolizing approach look like Kim Jung Un is their CEO and product manager. Windows as an operating system, not to mention most Linux distributions, IS free software. How can entire operating systems be free to use with no restrictions while an editor for the sole purpose of filling out fields in a document cost hundreds of dollars? It is 2020 for god's sake. How hasn't this been figured out yet? I now understand why Steve Jobs disliked (hated) Adobe. They deserve the criticism. The only thing perpetuating their software is their iron clad protection and promotion of their products via marketing and monopolization. Pessimistically, I expect Adobe to catch up to this workaround and soon prevent people from being able to edit PDF's by "printing" and then saving as PDF to remove the editing restrictions. This will be done to force people to purchase a product that does something, I assert again, a few senior students completing their capstone course could code up in a few months. Apple needs to be vigilant about not letting Adobe change the PDF format in a way that prevents these workarounds. But Apple should have the upper hand. Because, at the end of the day, PDF documents are meant to be printable. And if they are meant to be printable, that means that they can be treated as images. If they can be treated as images, then they can be edited without needing to rely on Adobe products. [link] [comments]

I noticed in a 2012 13.3" MacBook Pro, with its updated mac OS Mojave (not Catalina) v10.14.6, differences of free disk spaces in a Micron 500 GB between accounts. Admin level account showed about 123 GB. Standard level account showed 117 GB. Why the 6 GB difference? Thank you for reading and hopefully answering. :) [link] [comments]

Pugetsystems Premiere Pro Benchmark Test Posted: 19 May 2020 06:16 PM PDT Hey everyone, Just wondering if any of you have run the Pugetsystems Premiere Pro benchmark test on your Macs. If so, what gear do you have and what scores did you get? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 May 2020 06:09 PM PDT My last MacBook crapped out and im short on funds, so I bought a MacBook Pro mid-2012 from a pawnshop. I bought a cheap ssd to upgrade the system with and when I tried to boot up in recovery mode I ran into the firmware lock screen. I contacted Apple and they told me without the original receipt I'm out of luck. I tried the reset the ram by removing one and using cmd+opt+p+r, but nothing happened. Does anyone know a work around or how to clone the hdd onto a ssd, so I can still benefit from an upgraded hard drive? Edit: Forgot to mention it is running on the most recent version of Catalina and I have access to the administrator login [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 May 2020 11:45 AM PDT All of a sudden my Mac started asking to reconfirm my passwords on the mail app and many websites I tried to sign in I couldn't because I don't remember my passwords and auto-fill wasn't an option anymore. So when I clicked on the in the box I was asked to put my password in I clicked on 'Other Passwords' and the whole window of my passwords had disappeared. I kind of freaked out but then I opened the app 'Keychain Access' and I saw a weird thing. Some passwords were there but this: 'com.apple.account.idms.heartbeat-token' appears to be the website of almost all of my passwords. What does this mean? that I lost all my passwords forever? How can I restore them? I still see my passwords on my iPhone's keychain [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 May 2020 01:52 PM PDT Hey everyone, Since a few day I'm battling to get rid of a malware on Safari, who is replacing google.com to ca.yahoo.com to any search applied. I've used Ccleaner and CleanMyMac who found some malware and get rid of it (almost 20 in total). But it's keep coming back. It's noway I can use google.com as a search engine. In the core files, I've noticed com.apple.Safari.plist & TopSites.plist who have that yahoo URL who is coming back in the middle of thousand of other things. I don't if can delete the file or not, or modify it to erase that URL in it. Also, in the task I have « SearchNetLetterDaemon » & « SearchNetLetter » always active and I can't kill them, it's always coming back. I have no clues if it's related. I'm running on Catalina. Thanks 🙏🏻 [link] [comments]
