Tech shop wants to charge $500 to fix headphone port.

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:25 PM PDT

You know those little packages with the beads in 'em? Yeah those ones to keep rats and that away from products.

One of those packages burst in my backpack and one of the tiny little beads, got stuck in my headphone port. The tech shop I took the computer to, wants to charge $400-$500 dollars to fix the issue (I'm assuming they want to just replace the entire logic board).

Is there anything I can do? I cannot afford this for my life and I need access to this port.

    upgrade from 2017 dual core i5 to 2020 Air i5 or 2020 Pro 13 i5 ?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 11:31 PM PDT

    Hi,

Okay so my 2017 MacBook Pro i5 is almost dead (random shut downs and hard disc unable to be found during restart.) so I am planing to upgrade it. I am having a hard time choosing between Air i5 vs Pro base model.

Right now I have a 2017 pro i5 (dual core). I am a theoretical physicst and most of my heavy lifting computation is done in the cluster, but I do prototype my codes in my laptop (Julia/python/C/FORTRAN) I find my 2017 inadequate for that as almost always it runs the fan in full speed and especially with the current Zoom scenario, its impossible to keep my Julia kernels open and zoom at the same time. My local coding involves mostly plotting (no huge data) and running Julia/python functions that compute for say 2-3 mins in my 17' pro.

Coming to the question how good is Air 2020 i5 compared to pro 17 i5 ? does the change in i5 generation give in the 2020 Air give much better performance for a person coming from lagging 17' pro ? or should I just again opt for 2020 Pro i5 ?

    Thanks in advance !

I started a trade In for my MacBook Pro through apple website where you send them (Phobio) the MBO and they send you a gift card with the value of the device. they sent the box kit so I can ship the MBP but if I chance my mind I can just not send it, right? I don't have to do anything else?

Is it normal for my Macbook to get hot for basic stuff?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 02:37 PM PDT

    Hello there.

About a year ago I bought a base model 13" MBP ($1,500 USD) and I've been using it for basic college stuff and photo editing. It always got noticeably hot while editing photos and with intensive tasks, and sometimes even while browsing Facebook, Chrome or even Reddit.

Recently I got a temperature gauge utility for monitoring my CPU temperature while playing some light games (Warthunder and KSP). It got to around 93 C while playing KSP. A temperature I am not comfortable with while gaming, so I stopped playing games. No big deal since it was obviously not designed for it.

The thing that seems a little bit odd to me, is the fact that apparently, my MBP sometimes runs at about 35-40 degrees Celsius while idle on the Home screen and 55-60 C while at my online classes in Zoom.

Are this temperatures normal while on this basic tasks?

    Thanks in advance.

macbook air order stuck on “processing”

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:11 PM PDT

i ordered a macbook air (newest model) on may 11th and it still hasn't shipped and today is may 20th. it says that the estimated delivery is may 19th-may 27th but it's still says processing. i still have the option to cancel it :( i know it's mostly because of its popularity and the pandemic, but i didn't think it would take this long. spoke with someone from apple and she said she's not sure when it will ship or deliver and she isn't sure if it will come the date it says it will. i don't want it to get pushed back because i am a college student and i'm about to do summer classes and i have no laptop/: i don't want to cancel it because i'm financing it through the credit card promotion apple has. is anybody else waiting on theirs? has anybody got theirs? tell me your experiences please :(

Question: Upgrading Ram and Battery - Installation

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:55 AM PDT

I just ordered new ram and a battery for my Early 2013 Macbook Pro 15 inch Retina. I have never opened up the inside of a macbook before, but I watched a couple videos on how these upgrades are done.

When I go to install these, is it best for me to install both in one go?

Or do one, close up the computer and make sure it works, and then open it up and do the other?

If the latter, then what should I do first: Ram or Battery? Does it matter?

Is there anything I should make sure of or be cautionary about in changing these things myself?

MBP 13 (late 2016) has both faulty keyboard and display, going to store friday...

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:43 AM PDT

As said in title friday I will go to the Apple store because my display, after showing the first symptoms of the flexgate, now is completely dead. Plus the infamous keyboard is failing from time to time (another acknowledged issue). Honestly this sucks and I'm very disappointed with the product.

Is there any chance to get a new machine instead of getting practically all the components replaced?

    MacBook Pro 13 inch

    Posted: 20 May 2020 10:11 AM PDT

I am in the market for a MacBook Pro 13 inch. The 1300 dollar price for the new one isn't too concerning, but saving money isn't too shabby. Is it worth saving a $100-$200 for a 2019 MBP with the butterfly keyboard? Or should I just get the new one?

    Question re: MBA 2020 i3

    Posted: 20 May 2020 09:20 AM PDT

Hi, I have a question about my new 2020 MBA i3 (basic base model, didn't add any upgrades). I've had it for just shy of a month and haven't used it every day.

People are constantly complaining about the 2020 MBAs overheating, and it's making me really paranoid (I have OCD and tend to obsessively worry about things I've spent a lot of money on, which is making it worse). I bought this particular model because I mainly just use it for word processing & casual web browsing. It seems just fine for me and I really like it so far.

I've not noticed the MacBook getting hot generally. But, I am working from home currently and have to engage in a few video calls on Microsoft teams here and there, and have noticed that it does heat up quite a bit during these calls. Is this normal?

The fan has only ever audibly come on once, during a video call, when I didn't realise the direct sun was shining on the laptop through the window. As soon as I moved it out of the sun and came out of the call the fan stopped and it instantly cooled down. It hasn't come on at all since then, even when the laptop feels very warm whilst I'm on these video calls. If the fan doesn't activate, do I actually have anything to worry about? it never seems to get hot when I'm not on a video call, even when I have multiple programs open etc.

    Thank you in advance! :-)

    MacBook Pro (April 2009 Edition)

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:42 AM PDT

Hi I have a MacBook Pro from 2009 that needs upgrading. Id like to upgrade the hard drive, the motherboard, the fan and anything else I can. The only issue with me replacing these things is I don't want to lose my WIFI password and other settings. So my question is if I replaced all the things I mentioned, what of what will erase my settings and WiFi?

New MacBook Pro or New MacBook Air?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:37 AM PDT

Trying to decide which one to get... the new MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro (both the $1,299 models)? I work in Project Management and Marketing and would like something that will last a while (my last MacBook Pro lasted 7 years).

I was leaning towards the Air for portability but when I saw the actual weight and specs difference and the Pro's touch bar I started doubting myself... any recommendations?

Question: Finder opens new windows whenever I click on a folder or location.

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:20 AM PDT

Today I noticed that Finder has starting doing what is stated in the title. I have already tried modifying Finder preferences to fix this but it has not worked. Am I missing something? I would really like to have the old Finder window back where everything opens in that one window, there is far less clutter. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Macbook Screen Glitching

    Posted: 20 May 2020 03:55 AM PDT

I just purchased a Macbook Air 2020 about a month ago, but now, occasionally, the screen has parts of it that are glitching a greenish colours. This is only on parts of the screen. I can't get pictures because it only happens for about a second.

Is anyone else facing this issue and does anyone know how to fix it?
