Why Are Apple (Magic) Keyboards This Way?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:51 PM PDT

Okay so not many, or really anyone, may have ever noticed this - and maybe some if they have noticed could explain what the purpose is or if it's only Magic keyboards...

If I want to hold any letter on the top row (Q, W, E, R, T, Y, U, I, O, P) I may not Shift+type the corresponding key above. It will not register to the computer. This stands even on Windows if using Bootcamp drivers too.

But hold on because there is more. So let me explain that part first and then go on... the example is that say I want to hold Q, I cannot then (while holding Q) type a "!" by using Shift+1 (as a side note crtl+1 will not do anything either). But I can (again, while holding Q) type Shift+2, Shift+3, etc... to produce "q@#..." without ever letting go of Q.

Same goes for W and so on and so forth - so when holding W, Shift+1 becomes functional and will register the "!" symbol, but then Shift+2 will not register. You get the pattern.

So let's go down a row... to A S D F G H J K L... If you hold A, you cannot type Shift+Q to produce a Capital Q while holding the A key already, but you can indeed type Shift+W, etc. Again, only the corresponding key above the key being held is blocked off and only holding Shift (or crtl, and I haven't tried other sub-functions).

Okay down one more row to Z X C V B N M... you hold any of those and Shift+Letter for the corresponding key above? Not an issue whatsoever.

Sure this seems 100% arbitrary and pointless. But I'll give you an example where it matters. In a game... If I'm playing a game with many hotkeys (I'll be straight up this is in relation to WoW to make the example easier to understand for some) if I am holding W and try to use a keybinded hotkey for Shift+2, it doesn't register.

Why in the world is the Apple (Magic only?) Keyboard hardware configured like this? I'm only curious and just want to LEARN things that I never knew before. If anyone can explain why they would purposefully configure this strange limitation but leave it out on the bottom row of keys, please do because I am fascinated by why this would ever be this way in the first place.

This is NOT a tech support question. This is simply an observation that I would like to foster some discussion around to better understand a piece of technology. I don't need or want support. I do not have an "issue" with the keyboards. This is related to Apple. This is in no way self-promotion on a Wednesday. This is not asking for what keyboard to buy instead, etc. This is not a post about a bug in beta software. Please do not delete my post over some oddity in how this breaks the precious rules. I just want to talk about something I noticed. THANK YOU.

Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple is still planning to introduce a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro with a mini-LED display

    Posted: 06 May 2020 09:59 AM PDT

His prediction from this rumor roundup on MacRumors:

    1. Apple in the fourth quarter of 2020 will release an updated 16-inch MacBook Pro with a mini-LED display, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo believes the mini-LED technology will "significantly improve productivity and the entertainment experience." Future mini-LED displays will use approximately 10,000 LEDs, with each one below 200 microns in size. Mini-LED will ultimately allow for thinner and lighter product designs, offering many of the same benefits as OLED like better wide color gamut, high contrast and dynamic range, and local dimming for truer blacks. Given the cost of mini-LED, the rumored MacBook Pro is expected to be a high-end model.
    2. Along with a mini-LED 16-inch MacBook Pro, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple is planning to introduce a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro with a mini-LED display. While Kuo has said the mini-LED version of the 16-inch MacBook Pro is slated for the fall of 2020, he hasn't provided launch information for the 14.1-inch model that Apple is working on beyond suggesting there are several mini-LED devices in the works for 2020 and 2021.
