Is my MacBook infected with a virus?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 07:33 PM PDT

My MacBook Pro started acting weird earlier today. It was really laggy in Safari, so I quitted it, and when tried to reopen it, it said that it was updating. Eventually I was able to reopen it, but my front page was different and looks like this. Not sure if that's how it normally works. Anyways I shut it down, b/c Safari was still kinda laggy even after it reopened. As well as having the Safari problem, I wasn't able to open up steam. My biggest worry if is I've gotten some type of malware/virus or if this is something common.

Do Macbooks get worse with updates?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 09:22 PM PDT

I have a 2017 Macbook base model and I was considering updating it. However, I'm afraid its going to make it slower like iPhones do when you update the os. Right now its running Mojave and the update available is Catalina. Thoughts?

Is a MacBook enough as a desktop daily driver?

If I kept the MacBook on a stand and used an external display + keyboard + mouse, would it be powerful enough and also, would it last long?

Left click not working even with a USB mouse...

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 11:55 PM PDT

Hi folks I've done a bit of a refurb on my MacBook pro 2011, replacing the battery and trackpad and having installed Mojave via dosdude1's patcher. And now left click does not do anything, right click works but not left, this is with a USB mouse and the trackpad. (physical click not working was the reason I replaced the trackpad with one from macfixit, but was a result of the battery swelling.)

I had run the patcher, run the post install script, and shut it down before replacing the parts.

The worrying thing is the left click doesn't work when I boot from the USB with the patcher.

    Any ideas?

Upgrading Wattage Charger to help with charging?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 07:26 PM PDT

    MacBook Pro 2017 13-inch, 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports

I've noticed that when I have a game open, my battery will not charge when plugged in. If I close the game, plug in the charger again, and then open the game, it will sometimes charge. Once charging, my charger works fine and will charge it perfectly, but sometimes I can't get it to work this way.

Will updating my charger from a 12W charger to a 30 or 61W charger help?

    Fix/Restore 2015 MacBook or Upgrade?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:07 PM PDT

    Hi

Urgent help / advice needed - I need to order a new laptop in the next few days in order to take online exams (though note this laptop won't be used solely for this exam). 'Typical' user, except I'd like to do a little gaming (nothing too hardcore/demanding) and my version of web browsing/research involves a high number of tabs being open at once (30+).

I currently have a MacBook Pro Retina 13-Inch Early 2915 (2.7GHz Intel Core i5; 8 GB memory, only 128 storage, which is shit and is partly why I want to get rid and upgrade). It's crapped out on me a few times during important timed exams that almost f'd over my degree, storage is full (why System has 58 GB storage allocated to it I don't know) despite an app/file clean-up. It wouldn't let me update for ages, but finally did today so that it's operating on macOS Sierra v10.12.6. It didn't show any further updates but I'm currently downloading macOS Catalina from the App Store.

So: - is it likely my MacBook has been crapping out due to lack of updates? Could Catalina save it? - if Catalina does save it, how can I possibly lower the storage space for 'System' files? A very quick search just brings up dodgy looking fake queries for the sole purpose of self promotion. - if it's fine to say goodbye to my 5 yr old laptop, am I actually getting an upgrade with the new MacBook Air 2020? Would I be better placed getting the 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro instead?

I can't wait until the new MacBook Pro releases (as timing wise, it's simply too close to my most important exam to guarantee delivery).

Would be very grateful for any advice!

MacBook Pro 13.3" unibody making intermittent clicking/tapping noises from palm rests

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Hi, my 2016 MacBook Pro non Touch Bar seems to be making random clicking noises from the unibody either when my hand leans on the palm rests or when it is picked up. It's not a sound that can be identified to be coming from one specific area.

This isn't a major issue but it has gotten worse as of recent and is rather annoying. I've tried tightening the screws on the backplate, however that hasn't fixed the issue.

Does anyone else have a problem like this? Is it just something that MacBooks with aluminium unibodies do?

    Help troubleshooting?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Unfamiliar with mac and found my sisters old MBP (A1278). Looking to fix it up to give me something to do. She doesn't know anything except that it rained one day and soaked through her backpack and it never turned back on.

Inspecting the logic board I see no signs of water damage and the water damage indicators, while I know aren't the most reliable in any machine, aren't triggered.

I think the logic board is faulty however due to the lack of a charging indicator on the MagSafe charger when plugged in, and I even have it some time to try and fill up a little first.

How would one go about cheaply fixing it and is that even the problem? Plenty of time on my hands so if any of you have any way to test this or that I'm game to try it.

MacBook Pro 13 vs Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:24 PM PDT

Good evening, I am looking for a serious comparison/advice between these two laptops or if someone tried both/their personal thoughts about this matter.

    Here is my point:

An year ago I had to buy a laptop for studying and all basics stuff (email, few video edits, read books, internet , etc. My choice was between the Dell XPS 13 and the MacBook Pro 13. I ended up buying the Macbook for the ecosystem thing, leaving the "infinity edge" display by Dell that intrigued me.

I recently got a display replacement (free due to this program) so the laptop is almost new (it has less than 200 cycles). I mean I love MacOS, don't get me wrong: I love the apple ecosystem (iPhone-Macbook), Continuity, etc... same for the design and the big trackpad.

But when my MacBook was sent to repair I had to use an old laptop that was too old to run windows FAST**.**

    I hate windows btw.

So I decided to install a copy of Ubuntu (Linux) and it was fast as a rocket. I really enjoy the "simplicity"of Linux like the command line/shell, the customisation and a system "more free" instead the limitations of MacOS.

So I ended up thinking about selling my MacBook Pro and buy a Dell XPS instead.

    What do you think?

Replacing a 2010 white MacBook A1342 battery without screws

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:19 PM PDT

So years ago my MacBook battery started expanding. It was out of warranty but I was able to take it in and get the battery removed. Worked fine plugged in.

Cut to now, I'm stuck at home, figured I'd finally upgrade the Mac to make it more usable again. I order ram, and a new battery.

Preemptively, I opened up my MacBook m, and found that the three Phillips screws and three tri tip screws were missing. not surprised given the battery was taken out instead of replaced, but it leaves me with an issue.

I need to replace the batteries. On eBay there are a few lots of tri tip screws for an a1342 battery but as far as I know I can use 6 tri tip screws. I need three and then three Phillips head.

An Ifixit page showed the tri tip were 5mm, and the Phillips head are 3.1mm.

What I'm asking is if anyone knows a reliable place I can get the screws replaced, or should I just take a risk online? I feel like I should be able to go to some screw depot online or manufacturer with the mm and be able to buy some cheaply.

    Thank you in advance.

Help Me Find the Right MacBook Please.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:14 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am looking to purchase a MacBook to do general web surfing, Photoshop, streaming, and to trade options. Obviously won't be doing all at once. I have a friend who works for Apple and she recommended me the newest Air but after watching reviews, it sounds like while the Air is capable technically, it will need to overclock to accommodate my needs. Am I better off getting an older Pro despite keyboard issues or is she recommending me the right MacBook for me?

    How to permanently delete Osascript?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT

This 'Osascript' keeps running on its own in the background and eventually starts to use up heaps of my CPU and RAM and whatever else it wants.

Can anyone tell me what it is and how to permanently delete it as i have tried several app-deleting programs and it never gets sorted. All I keep having to do is go into the Activity Monitor and stop it.

    Thanks!

MacBook Air 2020 - Issues starting Apps?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 05:04 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is staying healthy. I searched reddit to try and see if anyone asked this yet, but didn't see.

I recently received my 2020 MacBook Air (1.1ghz dual core i3, 16gb RAM, 256gb SSD) and I have really enjoyed it. This is coming after a 2015 MBA. I really like the space gray color, and for the most part, it has been great.

However, I've noticed something kind of concerning, and I'm not sure if it's the MacBook itself (I doubted this, but I don't really know much about computers) or the software needing an update. I am all up to date on my iOS.

In short, there have been fairly consistent problems launching certain apps, all by Apple. I use the Mail app to monitor my 3 gmail accounts (personal, school, work) and often, I'll click on an email and the content of it will take forever to load, if it ever does at all. If I try and open an attachment, same thing, this takes forever. In addition to that, I've noticed the Preview app has been doing terribly. I just Airdropped myself a picture from my phone and clicked on it in my downloads folder and Preview started loading (doing that "bouncing" motion on the toolbar) and never stopped. I had to force quit and try again, and it's still unable to do it.

I've been able to fix some of these issues by restarting, but it eventually pops up again.

Not that it matters right now due to COVID, but I am over an hour away from my nearest Apple Store, unfortunately. I do have Apple Care on this. I've had it about 2 weeks now.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any thoughts about what it could be, or if there's a fix? Or do I just have to wait for a software update?

    Macbook Pro Retina

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 09:32 AM PDT

Hey! So I've had my macbook pro retina since 2017 and at the time i didn't know but the cleaning workers at this store used to clean the screen with alcohol... You see where this is going... It even had a thing on the screen that i didn't know what it was until later as well... So, not knowing about it i bought the mac and used to clean it with alcohol, now the screen looks pretty bad, i will put an image so you guys can see how bad it is, though it looks way worse irl. Should i replace the screen? I've been searching and it costs about 500€ and I can't spend that much money right now, what do you guys suggest?

Why are Mac books so expensive but not as powerful as they could be for the price?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 08:07 AM PDT

    Was looking at: This

Which is an 8th gen i3.... with only 8gb of Ram:/

I just got a PC laptop running an 8th gen i7 8750h with 16gb of Ram with a GTX 2060 for the same price.

Yeah I don't have Retina display but I could hook it up to a external monitor.

I love Mac books and apple products in general but they're Price to performance ratio is off by a margin
