| Cloud Syncing with Photos messed up EXIF, recoverable? Posted: 08 Feb 2020 08:17 PM PST Hey all! After a long time fighting it, I finally enabled iCloud photo syncing. Well, after a few months, I realized I would prefer to control when, how, and what it syncs, so turned it off. When I did so, I realized that quite a few photos had their exif info changed to random days/times. I am okay manually going back through to update the time, but command + I gives me the wrong date for both lines. Is there another way to find the original shot info? Takes away the ability to do smart albums, organize by date, etc. when all the info is incorrect... :( I am in the process of looking through old backups, BUT, when I go to "photos library", show package content, it isn't organized at all, so I can't look that way through old backups...(yes, I guess theoretically it is possible Catalina did it as well, it all happened right around the same time.) | Mac mini on my network has very slow internet speeds, but no problem when transferring internally Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:31 PM PST I have a Mac mini running Catalina 10.15.3 connected via wifi to the same router as all my other machines, including a MacBook Air also running 10.15.3. Bandwidth specifically when accessing the internet is really really slow on the Mac Mini - to the extent that often loading web pages times out, and downloading files using a download manager it trickles along at maybe 30-40KB/s. Downloading the same files from the same place using the same download manager on the MacBook Air maxes out my internet connection bandwidth (which is only 12 megabits in the first place, but that's another story). However, transferring files via wifi across my LAN between the two Macs isn't a problem - as I type, I'm transferring about 15GB of Zip files and seeing 5-6MB/s transfer speeds. (Which still isn't amazing, but would definitely max out my atrocious internet connection, with room to spare.) Anyway, this means I can rule out the incredibly slow download speeds on the Mac Mini being caused by:
The DNS settings for the wifi connection on both machines are identical - it's 192.168.0.1 (my router) and 2620:fe::fe, which I assume is my router's IPv6 address. What else could be causing this, and/or what else can I do to diagnose...? [link] [comments]  | ||
| Issues with Imessage after update. (Posted in r/mac as well) Posted: 08 Feb 2020 10:54 PM PST So my 2011 Macbook Air has been working perfectly fine for the last near 9 years of duty. I updated to Mac OS Catilina because I figured, f it, the new Imessage functions will be useful. You see, I have an android and use my laptop as my school computer/server to send all my imessages to my android through port forwarding. I have been doing this no problem for months, no stutters, instant messages. However one functionality i lost was the ability to (send with confetti) or (like) or (question) a photo, these were abilities my server could unlock if I upgraded. But again, my laptop is sorta old and I dont have the largest amount of disk space so I was holding off. I downloaded Catlina yesterday, and thats when my imessage issues started. First, i would send a message through my server and it would take 10 seconds to send, than 30 seconds, than 10 minutes, and now any imessage i send wont send, wether I send it from my android or if i send it straight from my mac. Its not a problem with my server because it is up to date and I have troubleshooted every option relating to my server. Also because messages wont send directly from the Mac either, is also proof its not the server. My question is if anyone else is having or had this same problem, and if so how did they get over this issue, or should I just downgrade my system to Mojave? TL:DR Student needs to send photos and texts through Mac, but after update to Catilina, no Imessages are sending. Just wondering if I am the only one, if not, what did others do. | Bluetooth microphone defaults back to SCO Posted: 08 Feb 2020 04:41 AM PST So lately I've been trying to use my bluetooth headphones (Senneheiser 4.50 BTNC) for audio input and output, but this always results in my codec switching back to SCO (even though my headphones support APTX). I'm aware that you can fix the audio issue by switching back to the computer mic, but I haven't found any solution that allows me to continue using my headphone mic. I've tried using bluetooth explorer to force APTX and using terminal to set APTX on and SCO off, but it always ends up defaulting back to SCO when I use the bluetooth mic. | How do I force my photos to iCloud? Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:21 PM PST I have only 3 GB of available space on MacBook Pro, and have the 200 GB iCloud plan with 160.3 unused. My photos library takes up 137.12 GB, so I've turned on iCloud photos to try to free up space. I checked iCloud.com and all of my photos are there, so I guess it worked? But if I check my Mac storage, nothing has changed and I still have only 3 GB available. Any ideas would be appreciated [link] [comments]  | ||

| Posted: 08 Feb 2020 10:08 AM PST I use an external display with an iMac but only really to get set up. Once I'm actually working, I find the external display distracting so just turn it off. When I open apps, macOS 'thinks' that my turned-off monitor is on and often places them there, out-of-reach. How to fix this? The only thing that I can think of is to unplug the external monitor from the iMac so that there really is no external monitor there to get confused about. I know that you can go the extra step and select open in Screen 1 (only in the Dock, I think); BUT: 1. this often doesn't actually work; 2. I'd much rather use Command Tab to select apps. Is there anybody who can help me, and others along the way? What I want: I have 5 years of transactions (6.000 lines) in a csv. I'd like to load them in the app, and preferably, have them assign names (different supermarkets to "supermarkt") and tags "groceries". There don't have to be a lot of option, just categories too see what money comes in and what money goes out, and for what: groceries, books, clothes, energy, house, car, ... etc. I do not want any subscription software, hate it. Just free or a one time buy. Debit & Credit: nice, free for the use I need, but I think I need to manually add all names and categories. With 6.000 transactions a big no-no. However I'm cautious since before updating to Mojave I had el Capitan and it felt like a downgrade at the beginning since I had a lot of issues with battery and other things that I had to look ways to fix. | Warning: Be careful with .nosync when downloading files Posted: 08 Feb 2020 09:05 AM PST I noticed my wallpaper had stopped changing automatically as I set because the files in the wallpaper folder were being uploaded to icloud when they weren't being used as wallpapers(seriously? That's a dumb oversight) I motioned to Download now and while that was happening added .nosync to the folder to get the wallpapers working again, the files didn't come back properly so I removed the nosync and all the wallpapers except the one I was using at the time disappeared, practically rm -rf'd from my computer, wasn't on iCloud Drive or my computer. Not a problem because I have my wallpapers on my 125 GB USB at home, but that could have been more important files or files without backup. So yeah, iCloud sync is already pretty user unfriendly in general with how little control you have over it but the .nosync command is pretty dangerous. [link] [comments]  | ||
| I am upgrading from Mojave to Catalina... Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:55 AM PST WISH ME LUCK BOISSS. I'll let you know what the result is after 20-25 minutes. UPDATE: IT'SDONE BOIIIIIIS @ ~41 minutes UPDATE 2: No issues thus far, even the default Mail app has retained all of it's messages. No need to reload the accounts UPDATE 3: opening all of my apps that I use are working as expected. However there was a weird sign in error prompt that appeared to originate from App Store. After I clicked okay, App Store prompted me to sign in. Entered my credentials and it went away for a few minutes. Then suddenly got the error prompt again. Repeated the aforementioned steps and it hasn't appeared again. Noticed a small issue with the Wallet app. It removed one of my cards from Apple Pay eligibility (says it was removed by issuer). Not entirely sure if this is related to Catalina or not. Before the upgrade, I logged out of my iCloud account and logged back in due to issues with sending SMS messages from my MBP, but I am 99.99% sure that I re-added all of my cards to this MBP. I ended up just re-adding it after the upgrade. This is likely the last update I will make for this post.
