Bring back the iconic Boot Chime with this Terminal command: sudo nvram StartupMute=%00 Posted: 22 Feb 2020 11:18 PM PST The command worked on my 2019 MacBook Air running Catalina 10.15.3. Edit: As expected, if you zap the PRAM/NVRAM the Boot Chime will be disabled and you will have to re-enter the Terminal command. [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Feb 2020 12:22 PM PST Additional details: - I'm using APFS - macOS Catalina - Duplicate file remover tool: Duplicate Detective 2 (a very good app that I've used with great success in the past -- it compares files based on their hash) - Preferences in the duplicate file remover tool: delete files immediately (do not send to recycle bin) - I've verified that the duplicate files have been deleted (using Finder) There are no files in the trash. I've rebooted and remounted the drive. I've gained less than 1 GB of additional free space after supposedly deleting 500+ GB. I'm completely out of ideas. EDIT: this does not involve the Photos for Mac app, or the photos library. The duplicate remover acts on physical files on the drive, not a photo library. [link] [comments]
is there a way to get midi files to play as piano when previewed in finder? it used to be possible. Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:36 PM PST this was a feature i loved, didn't have to put a midi file into logic to hear what it was. nowadays midi files don't preview, but i thought maybe this was a feature hidden but not default anymore. Reddit using lot or RAM on MBA(MBP maybe as well) on Safari... Posted: 22 Feb 2020 03:03 PM PST I am not sure if this is a known issue or what not but has anyone noticed that if you scroll reddit for a while without refreshing to changing to another page that it will continually ramp up the RAM usage. I have tested this by closing the page and then reloading it and watching the activity monitor while I scroll reddit. It will creep up to 2.5+ GB RAM usage and if I reload it then quickly drops back down to right at 1 GB. I have tested this multiple times and it seems to be consistent. I noticed this because I recently got a MBA and was thinking of taking back my MBP and wanted to see how much RAM I was using in general so I started monitoring my usage more. I don't know if windows 7 Firefox had the same issue or if other browsers have this issue. I only want to use safari since I am a MacOS convert. This post is mainly wanting to see if anyone else has experienced this at all. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Stop display sleeping while showing login screen? Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:27 PM PST I want to be able to leave my mac showing the login screen (mainly because I'm obsessed with my new wallaper) but no matter which application I use, none of them seem to prevent sleeping on login screen. A while ago it would sometimes stay awake on the login screen but I could never figure out how I was getting that to happen. TIA [link] [comments]
Bootcamp not letting me get back into Mac OS Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:36 PM PST Hey, I recently installed bootcamp on my laptop earlier today and for some reason it isn't letting me get back into the mac os. Things I've tried that have all failed: - holding the option key upon restart (this only shows the windows partition, not the mac one) - in windows going to the bootcamp control panel and selecting Mac OS as the start up partition (this restarts the computer, shows the apple logo for a few seconds, then goes back onto windows) - restarting and holding option+commad+P+R (goes right back into windows) All help is appreciated! Posted: 22 Feb 2020 03:58 PM PST On my Mac I can invoke the Spotlight Search, then type in '£4,995' and it will show me the $ / € / ¥ amounts. Is there a way that I can also get this to display the current BTC amount? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:58 PM PST I know I could create a separate login, add a password to my account etc... but I feel that my laptop has been open for them to use for so long that it would be rather strange if I were to all of a sudden create an account for them. Is there finder>library> files I can look at to see if they are going through my stuff or website history I can find even if they have deleted it? The laptop is in the lounge room so i didn't think I would need to be checking on things as it's a main room we all use, but apparently I do 😲 [link] [comments]
Unable to Install High Sierra Supplemental Update 2 to fix Audio Stuttering Issue Posted: 22 Feb 2020 03:17 PM PST I recently purchased a 2018 MB Pro 15" (6-core i7 // 16GB RAM) running High Sierra 10.13.6. I've noticed that the audio starts stuttering under a medium to heavy work load (dozen chrome tabs open + adobe photoshop). Still, this behavior is not normal. After a little digging, it seems the issue was fixed when some users installed the supplemental update for high sierra. After downloading the update from apple, I get this error message. I'd like to hold off indefinitely on updating to Catalina, but have been considering Mojave now because the stuttering is unacceptable. Anybody else? [link] [comments]
Can I flash my GPU’s vbios in another computer? Posted: 22 Feb 2020 03:14 PM PST So in order to make my Radeon XFX RX 560 work with my Mac pro from 2010 and Mojave I read that I have to flash the GPU. It feels like a pain in the ass to switch memory cards back-and-forth to install windows on my mac to see if it works and so on; so I am asking because I have another PC that runs windows where I could plug-in this GPU and flash it's Vbios. Does anyone know if it's doable? [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro 2014 display freezing unless connected to external display Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:26 AM PST Hi, I've been having issues with the screen on my laptop completely freezing on a still image of whatever, usually very soon after startup but the computer itself appears to be working as I can hear sound from videos playing, the volume increase and decrease chirping as well as being able to brighten and dim the display. The only way to use the laptop at all is to have it connected to an external display, this way I am able to use both screens no problem but this defeats the point of having a laptop. I have tried the usual troubleshooting steps such as: Reset SMC Reset nvram Factory reset the laptop (this meant it was happening on Mac os Catalina and mavericks) And doing this didn't help at all but I did notice the screen does not freeze in safe mode or in the recovery environment, I've had this issue for about a week or two and haven't been able to find a fix mostly not touched the laptop, today I've noticed for a split second there will be an artifact on the apple boot screen but will go away quickly and won't come back once it's into the operating system. I'm not sure if the graphics card can be failing as it's integrated into the CPU and that wouldn't explain it working with another screen connected as that's a bigger load. At this point I feel like it's a very rare issue as I can't find any relevant information to this problem online. If it matters it's the 13 inch model with an i7, this model of Mac appears to be quite rare as most 2014 13 inch laptops have i5s. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks Here is a pic of the screen being frozen Here is a pic of it working with an external monitor connected [link] [comments]
Installing MacOS Sierra from bootable USB thumb drive on a factory reset MBP 13 Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:32 AM PST Hello, Would there be anyone who could help me out with whether or not it's possible in creating a bootable USB-C thumb drive to install Sierra on a newly reset MacBook Pro? Is it possible to download it straight from Apple's site on a windows 10 machine and just xfer the installer to my USB drive?? Or would I need access to MacBook? Because I don't have physical access to my friend's machine right now so I'd rather download the file at home since my internet is alot faster. Originally before I reset it, it was running on Sierra, I wiped the machine and tried to install and upgrade to high Sierra but it gave me an error ("Could not create a preboot volume for AFPS install"). Which I believe is because the newer MacOS software has a different file system, I think?? I tried doing the "internet recovery method" and it wanted to install Sierra again but I had issues with downloading the software (due to their slow internet), so I'd like to try the bootable USB method if that's possible. Cheers mates!! [link] [comments]
search in preview not working properly Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:14 AM PST Before, when I did a search in the preview app for "create a post" it would find me the exact sentence. Now it searches for all three words. Instead of showing me on what page the sentence is, it shows my every single page that contains the words "create" "a" and "post" How can I fix this? Problem with Photo after update to catalina. Cannot open my library anymore Posted: 22 Feb 2020 06:29 AM PST Hi, Anyone having problems with apple photo after updating macOS to the latest (Catalina)? I'm having problems after the update. I cannot open the photo app anymore after the update I keep getting a error message that the library needs to be repaired and after I choose to repair it, it run for a few minutes and when the progress bar reaches 100% I get an error message that the library couldn't be repaired (error 1000). I've my photo library on a Synology nas and it has always been working good with every major macOS update until now (10.15.x). On the Apple forum site I have read that a lot of people had similar problems and their were a view suggesting how to fix it but none of them works for me. So I'm wondering if there are people here that have experienced similar problems and found a solution. [link] [comments]
Can still open all apps during downtime (Screen time) Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:46 AM PST Am using screen time's downtime feature on macOS Catalina, which works with Safari whenever I open sites during downtime, screen time actually blocks the sites unless I extend by giving my passcode. But with other apps, although their icons turn dark during downtime signifying that I can't use it, whenever I click on the icons however, the app still opens and I'm able to use it, not asking if I wanna extend or not, it just opens normally like it's not downtime. I'm actually using screen time for my own adminstrator account, cuz while I need the admin privileges, I also need to go to bed at a consistent time. Dk if this is an actual bug or if I'm missing something. Can't seem to find anything from the internet about this. [link] [comments] |
