Apple selected my app, Spend Stack, to be in its retail demo program in the U.S.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 08:06 AM PST

    Hey all -

In the middle of last year I released my running total list app, Spend Stack. Starting (as far as I can tell) last week, Apple rolled it out to their retail demo program!

This means it's on iPhones and iPads at Best Buy's, Apple affiliate stores and Apple Stores. This was a very exciting process for me, and it feels great to have it across the U.S. I went into Best Buy with my wife, and we took a bunch of selfies with the phones running Spend Stack like we were proud parents (we call the app our fourth child) 😆 - some photos here. This has definitely been a career highlight, there's nothing like walking into a store and seeing your app running on the demo hardware. I try hard to make an app that's a great platform citizen, so in a way it feels like some validation I'm on the right path there.

If you're interested, here are some common questions I've had:

    • Did you apply for the retail demo program?

No, Apple reached out to me last December. As far as I know, there is no avenue to apply for this program and it seems like they curate these apps in house. I'm not sure if they are part of the same App Store editorial team or not. It's interesting, because I've not been featured too much on the App Store. For example, I've been asked for promotion art a few times but as far as I know it's not been used up to this point. So there doesn't seem to be a strong correlation there.

    • Where all is it at, and for how long?

I'm not entirely sure, and they don't really say. The person I talked with at developer relations was really kind throughout the process, but I never really had any information about where all it'll be at, which territories, stores, etc. From just poking around, it seems like there are about 4 different retail demo lineups. But, some apps show up on all four of those, while some don't. In my case, it seems like either Lifesum or Spend Stack show up on most of these (but not together). That is to say, if Lifesum is on the demo unit then Spend Stack isn't, and vice-versa. They are also in the same spot.

    • Has it helped sales?

Yes, it has! There aren't a lot of us doing paid up front anymore, but it has given the app a boost. Most downloads come from search still, but it seems some recent spikes have occurred right when I noticed Spend Stack was rolling out across stores. It's not from marketing, as I've been heads down on a large update for the past few months, so I'm guessing it's from this.

    • Do you have to create a specific version for it?

Also yes. You get a 15-20 page pdf of the requirements. They aren't too bad. Most of the time I spent (after making the build) was getting it uploaded to the App Store because you've got to do it a bit differently than normal. I ran into a few hiccups along the way, mostly technical. For example, it took Spend Stack five seconds to launch at first because I was creating all of the demo data when it booted. This obviously wouldn't work, so I ended up shipping a pre populated database with it that's read at launch. Much better! You've also got to wipe this data when the app is no longer in use, which made multiple windows support tough since the API reports that your app was backgrounders while a new window is being opened.

Anyways, it has been such a cool experience and I thought I'd share. If you have thoughts or questions, I'm happy to answer them. Thanks for taking time out of your day to read this if you made it this far

There are no advertisements, no data collection and no account sign-ups. The one in-app purchase serves as an example of wealth inequality.

As the developer of Billion Dollar Swipe I'm happy to answer any questions. Thanks for your interest.

With Facebook and Google failing to develop for iOS, is Microsoft filling the gap?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 07:03 AM PST

There have been some recent posts commenting on Instagram's lack of an iPad app, Google's painfully slow rollout of Gmail's dark mode (not to mention the state of Docs and Sheets on iPad), WhatsApp finally getting dark mode months after the release of the feature, and the lack of features for Facebook's main app (granted, this post is 4 months old).

But Microsoft seems to be developing for iOS and iPadOS at a steady rate, especially with their recent announcement of Microsoft Office, which combines Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (something I wish Google would do with Drive) with a UI designed for mobile.

Is this view warranted? Is Microsoft developing more/better apps than Facebook and Google? What do you think?

I created an energy-efficient, native Content Blocker for Safari. It's free while in beta!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:28 AM PST

Like many of you on-the-go, I'm trying to keep my Mac running cool and charged all day. Using Safari with Content Blocker(s) can make browsing faster and more energy efficient by preventing aggressive ads, trackers, and other annoyances (e.g. in-page popups) from loading.

After I got my new MacBook Air, I really started to notice how wasteful other blockers were, in terms of memory and CPU usage. They sometimes even made the fans on my Mac start spinning, which meant that my battery's charge was being rapidly depleted.

That's why I created RadBlock. It:

    • Blocks content based definitions maintained large community (EasyList)
    • Updates its definitions automatically (with your consent)
    • Doesn't have access to your data
    • Is completley free while it's in beta

RadBlock is also very minimal: it only has a preferences window, which matches Safari's aesthetic. You can set it up once and totally forget about it.

RadBlock is currently in a closed beta, but it's really simple to get an invite. Simply follow @RadBlockApp on Twitter, and you'll get a DM once there's a spot available.

If you're not on Twitter, or would rather not join the waiting list, no problem! I plan on rolling out a public beta soon (but don't have a timeline for that quite yet). Once it's out of beta, it'll be available on the Mac App Store.

If you want more information, you can check out the fancy radblock.app site. A full introduction is available in the RadBlock blog.

    Have a nice weekend! 🤙

I launched a color-picker iOS and macOS app with live camera picker support

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 03:45 AM PST

    Hey Reddit!

I'm back with more promo codes to give away for my app Aurora after taking all the feedback and suggestions onboard from last time and improving the app further.

Three weeks ago I launched a beautiful iOS and macOS color-picker and dictionary app called Aurora that contains the ability to find color details, pick colors from the camera and images, replace colors in images, save colors, view their related palettes, CSS, Obj-C, and Swift code snippets, and more. It also has a Watch app and a Today Extension widget.

The iOS app can be found over at: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/aurora-color-picker/id1493055655?ls=1

The macOS app can be found over at: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/aurora-color-picker/id1495998489?ls=1&mt=12

It has since been featured on 9to5mac, iDownloadBlog, and AppAdvice, along with being included in various lists on the App Store such as 'New Apps We Love'.

I mentioned it here back when it first launched, but I'm now back with more promo codes. Reply to this post for the chance to win a free copy of both the iOS and macOS versions of Aurora! (I will PM 20 random people)

Let me know what you think!

I am creating an accessibility camera app for the iPhone, which works by shifting the problematic colors (respective to the type of colorblindness) towards colors that can be easily differentiated. It's mostly done, and I am looking for some beta testers.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 09:26 PM PST

    Hi there,

As mentioned in the title, I am working on an iPhone app for colorblind people (myself included). The app is basically a camera, and it shifts the problematic colors (for your type of colorblindness) towards colors that are easier to differentiate.

I have a mild protanomaly, and I've found this app to be very useful when I am unable to differentiate between red/green or blue/purple on charts, fruits, etc.

If you have any form of colorblindness and have an iPhone/iPad, I would love to give you access to the beta and gather some feedback to improve it further. Just send me a DM, and I'll invite you to TestFlight.

This app is my second app for colorblind people, and I am hoping to improve the world for us a little more. My first app is called Cone, and I am very grateful for all the feedback I'd received for it a couple of years ago.

    Thank you!
