| Rookie here, need help installing El Capitan on old 2009 MBPro with new SSD Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:09 PM PST Hello r/macos, I am working on fixing up my old Macbook Pro from 2009. I was able to fire it up today for the first time in over 7 years and am posting from it currently(WOOT!). To get it running I replaced the battery and the hard drive with a new SSD. My troubles were that the old HD was so damaged I could not even startup the computer or backup my old data. I was however able to get an OS on the system by plugging the SSD in to a family members Mac desktop with a sata to USB and clone their entire HD on to the SSD which I then plugged back in to fire up this laptop. My question now is, how do I erase all the old data and install a new upgraded os? The admin information is still theirs, and I have tried installing El Capitan twice with no results. The installer says finished and then nothing happens. Also, I don't have recovery mode on this computer. The command+R function on startup does not work. What are my options? [link] [comments]  | ||

We're trying to ensure that we get a decent lifespan out of the MacBook Airs that we're purchasing. They are mostly used for basic web-browsing and MS Office - nothing intensive. We'd rather not needlessly spend tens of thousands of dollars ordering 16GB models but there's a concern that 16GB may be a requirement in a few years. Apple are usually quite good with not selling hardware that won't be supported in under 5-8 years but we wouldn't want to be wrong about this, what with RAM being soldered to boards now! | MacBook Pro replacement display issues (Can't change brightness and adjust scaling) Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:06 PM PST So back in 2017 my MacBook Pro Retina (Mid 2014) screen got cracked so I had to get a replacement. Apple would've charged me 600€ for it so I did the repair somewhere else for 400€ (which I regret no obviously). The replacement display looked the same as the original Apple one, besides IPS glow in every corner but was not really noticeable. It was running Sierra at the time and everything was fine - until Apple rolled out an update in April 2017. I was not able to change the brightness anymore. Not via the keyboard or the system settings. Did a PRAM, SMC, NVRAM reset, clean install, etc. without luck. Seems like Apple changed something that affected the display controller. So for a few months I wasn't able to change the brightness at all until I found a forum post with someone having the same problem. He suggested to download the "Brightness Slider" app from the App Store and voila - I was finally able to adjust it. But only through the app, it was still not possible to do that with the keys or system settings - strange. I actually used Windows for a long time on my MacBook because of this - cause not being able to change the brightness with the keyboard got really annoying but it worked under Windows. Also I couldn't change the scaling under macOS, the option "More space" was the same as the default setting, everything way too zoomed in with no option to change it. Even tried SwitchResX and various other programs to try to fix it, but they didn't work because I would lose the high DPI functionality and everything looked blurry. Is there any hack to make the display controller think I'm using an original Apple display? The company where I got it repaired told me it was an original OEM display but Apple blocked support for replacement displays to prevent 3rd party (non-authorized) repairs. There has to be a way to restore the brightness functionality (I mean why does the Brightness app work) or make the OS believe it's an original Apple display? Maybe through a Linux Live CD and changing some EFI/system values or a simple kext file? I don't know.. I did some google searches but I haven't found any fix for this. [link] [comments]  | ||
| Catalina jittery scrolling and window dragging Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:02 PM PST Since updating my late 2013 MBP 8g ram to Catalina from Mojave I've noticed that when I drag windows there's like a slight trail or ghosting happening. This wasn't present in Mojave and my display seems fine. It seems to be an animation problem or something cause this also happens when scrolling a webpage but also with a stutter. I recognise this is a very specific situation, but does anyone else use a software which includes localised man pages for another language, and can successfully display accented characters? | [Help] SMART board SB560 not recognized in Catalina Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:17 AM PST Hello, I'm trying to get this SMART board to work on Catalina. It is an old board. It uses USB to serial connection. Normally, I am supposed to be able to plug a laptop into a projector display and the board into USB and I can interact with the desktop using a pen or my hand. I can do this on my MacBook Pro running Yosemite or on my Surface running Windows 10. The interactive function works well on both systems. When I plug it into my MacBook Air running Catalina, it's as if the board isn't recognized at all. When I plug into the Windows 10 system or the Yosemite system, the light on the board itself turns green to indicate it's being used. When I plug it into Catalina system, the light flashes green and red until eventually going back to the default color, red. What's even more confusing is in System Report, Catalina can see the board and actually recognizes what it is. I checked this on the Yosemite system and the report is the exact same. I thought at first Catalina no longer recognized serial connections but you can see in the above image that that's not the case. I would appreciate any insight on this issue. Thank you. Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:13 AM PST Redditors -- I'm a recent macOS convert (since July of 2019) who has relied on Microsoft Outlook and its predecessors since the long-ago days of Windows Messaging on Win95. I now exclusively use Apple devices, including an iMac at work, MacBook Pro at home and an iPad Air/iPhone 11 Pro for everything in between. I've tried to continue using Outlook for macOS, but it just isn't a workable solution as it doesn't handle multiple Google calendars very well. Plus it's a resource hog on my iMac, and it simply isn't built like a native macOS app. The macOS Mail app, on the other hand, makes me want to scream -- primarily because of the inability to control when a message is marked as read. I've tried plug-ins to give me control of this annoying feature, but can't find anything that I like. So...looking for recommendations for a third-party alternative to Mail that is as feature-rich as Outlook is on a Windows machine. Ideally, it would include both e-mail and calendar integrated within the same app, and if that's the case, it needs to be able to functionally handle multiple Gmail calendars (one of Outlook for Mac's problems is that it's nearly impossible to delete an event when you're managing someone else's calendar and multiple parties have been invited to said event -- you almost always have to login to Gmail via a Web browser to resolve). Also looking for something that's not a Chrome-style resource hog. Certainly willing to pay for an app. I've tried Spark (didn't really like it). What I mean by session is, that I have many different applications, websites, files open for specific research and computing. I currently save my safari tabs and create Workflows in automator for example. But I have to do everything manually. Looking for some kind of automation or application that remembers all my open services (applications and tabs), stores them in one launcher. When I want to keep working on this specific session I should be able to relaunch everything by one click. It is basically like relaunching everything after the reboot. We are using the AFP protocol through Acronis to connect to Active Directory. Everything runs well except Final Cut Pro X. When they try to open files, it says "unsupported volume type". I am thinking about getting a 2 bay hard drive enclosure that supports RAID 1 and a few pair of hard drives to put everything on it. My questions are : Let's say I have pair of hard drives, I fill up the first two ones, and now I have my second pair in the RAID enclosure. Imagine I need to access some old file from the first pair of hard drive. Can I just take the second pair out of the enclosure and put the first one back in ? Will everything remain RAID 1 or will it just get messy and I'll lose my files ? And are there thunderbolt 3 raid enclosures that don't need AC power ? The text is very small and hard to read and when I enter a site, I always need to press 'cmd' + '+' so I can see easily.
