[REVIEW AND COMPARISON] GoodNotes 5 vs Notability 9.2.3

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 06:05 AM PST

I decided to make a review and comparison of GoodNotes 5 and Notability since there were more improvements and additional features since the last reviews that I have read on this subreddit, I hope my review helps!

I've been using GoodNotes for over a year now, and I just bought Notability last month and I have been using it frequently. I mainly annotate lecture slides and write notes (which produce notebooks that are 20+ A4 sized pages) on my iPad.

    GoodNotes

    Pros

    • lots of customization
      • paper templates
      • pen and highlighter size (0.5 mm intervals)
    • easy switching of notebooks
    • full-screen view available
    • I find that GoodNotes is best used for making notebooks that are really structured and organized
    • Has a very good zoom in window; properly moves the window especially when you get to the edge of the page.
    • highlights behind the text
    • presentation mode

    Cons

    • Feels laggy
    • Transparent PNG's are blurry when you zoom them in.
    • The highlighter tool cannot be used to create shapes, only straight lines.
    • takes up a lot of internal memory
    • user interface may be intimidating to some
    • short lines drawn with the shape tool sometimes wouldn't be completely straight, may have stubs at ends
    • doesn't have continuous scrolling
    • only backs up to iCloud
    • cannot zoom out farther (unlike Notability)

    Notability

    Pros

    • simple and straightforward interface
    • can modify handwriting's color and thickness
    • colors of pen and highlighter are the same
      • unlike GoodNotes, colors of the pen and highlighter tool have separate palettes
    • I find that Notability is best used for taking notes during lectures, annotating lecture slides, quick scrap notes
      • Just to elaborate, some of my professors do not upload lecture slides in advance and having the voice record function is really helpful
      • Some professors don't discuss much, annotating slides are sufficient
    • continuous scrolling; I like this since it makes sense for a digital notebook to not have breaks in between pages
    • highlights behind the text
    • highlighter tool is more vibrant
    • a lot of backup options
    • transparent PNG's are sharper compared to GoodNotes
    • I find that Notability manages memory better

    Cons

    • shape tool isn't as good as GoodNotes's
      • easier to make shapes that are filled
    • bad zoom in window
      • When you get to the edge of the page and write on the blue area, it doesn't let you write on the edge itself. Instead, it proceeds to the next line
    • limited choice of paper templates
    • pen width isn't as customizable as GoodNotes's
    • Subject Names cannot be repeated
    • no option to change sorting of notes (sort by newest, etc)
    • Developers take a long time before they add features that people want

    Verdict

When choosing between GoodNotes and Notability it all comes down to what kind of notes you're going to take and what you're going to use the app for. If you like customization, I suggest that you go for GoodNotes. If you are more of a person who writes direct and simple notes and doesn't plan to have their notebook printed, I suggest going for Notability.

If there is anything I have missed or if I have typed something by mistake, please let me know! Thank you for reading my review :D

Will you ever be able to write on text input boxes with the apple pencil?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 07:32 AM PST

I thought the apple pencil could be a keyboard replacement. But when you start writing with it on a text input, it pulls up the soft keyboard. Are they still working on letting you write on text input boxes or is that never going to happen?

    TIL Some Keyboard Shortcuts!

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:11 PM PST

I have been searching for over a year for a "forward delete" method on my iPad pro that didn't involve using the annoying little globe key as an fn (while it simultaneously switches between international keyboards and the emoji board). I couldn't find anything from my (albeit quick) Google search.

However the fact that ^[ (Ctrl+[) is functionally the Esc key, I wondered if control would have other similar emulations of keys otherwise not found on the iPad Pro's smart folio keyboard. I started trying combinations and ^h started deleting things like normal backspace. Then ^j started making new lines!! This was promising...! So I opened up other apps to make sure it wasn't just some built-in functionality of the wonderful "textastic" app.

Lo and behold the shortcuts worked in Apple Notes too!

After mucking about for a few minutes, I finally found it found... ^d is forward delete.

Knowing a little more about what i was hunting, I decided to look for Apple keyboard shortcuts that involve the control key. It turns out there is a slew of shortcuts on the Mac support pages..... ^d is one of them... Super useful for typing

Edit: the shortcuts seem to work system-wide

Is there an idea of when the next iPad Pro will be released? Not sure if I should purchase the current iPad Pro or wait for the new one to be released.

Note App for Word Processing - Simple alternatives?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:38 PM PST

I've recently started to use Apple Notes (on my iPad and Mac) to write rough drafts of documents I have to create regularly. I've found the simplicity to be awesome, it's quick. The list/outline note-taking format (which I use all the time) is really convenient and copies over really well to my final document. I love that it updates seamlessly between the Mac and iPad. It's streamed lined my work process a lot by allowing me to focus on content first, and then formatting later (but still makes formatting, especially outlines/lists copy over to Pages well—meaning, I don't lost the outline format, but can adjust it to the final style).

However, the idea of accidentally deleting all the content in a note or losing it some other way make me nervous. I lost as a note once when my iPad wasn't connected to the internet, and I had to restart for some reason.

Any suggestions for added security when working on important drafts, or other apps that might work similarly?

    Model Number question

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:38 AM PST

I just had my iPad Pro swapped out by the Genius Bar.

The model number of my original was MTXQ2LL/A.

The model number of the new one is NTXQ2LL/A.

I googled but haven't been able to find any references to this "N" model number. Anyone know why that might be?

Any further accounts of bending iPad Pro Gen3’s?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 12:43 PM PST

So I've had a few which somehow start bending despite being cared for after a few months, it's like they're made of butter.

I'm honestly considering sending this (3rd replacement) back again, since I'm worried about how extreme it will get, but I'm also concerned about how suspect they may find it for someone to replace something so often.

It's just a damn shame the shell isn't user replaceable, these devices are getting further and further away from modularity by the generation.

    Any suggestions?

Likelihood of new Air and/or Pro model coming in March?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 12:12 PM PST

So while doing research on getting a new (first ever) iPad in March, i stumbled across rumors that new models would be announced in March. How likely will they be announcing new iPads next month and should I hold off on purchasing the current models? How much will the price drop for the current models? Also I'm no pro but I can afford the Pro model. Should that be cause enough for me to get it or should I settle for the air?

Did Documents recent update stopped restoring volume?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 07:59 AM PST

This was my greatest grievance with Documents' video player, instead of leaving the system volume as it is, it restored it to the same value as when a video was played previously.
I usually have BT headphones on and when disconnected the iPad is muted. iOS rememberers this and set that automatically, but Documents was interfering with that by restoring the volume, not a great feature to have if you forgot to turn on your headphones at night.

This seem to be changed with the recent update. Did any else notice that?

How does the iPad Pro 2018 camera compare to the XR?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 11:30 AM PST

From what I can see, on paper they're the same. Are they actually the same cameras? I took the plunge and I usually just disable the camera app outright on an iPad but if this is as good as it seems then I might keep it around.

Night shift (blue light filter) app alternatives for older iPads (e.g. iPad 4)

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:10 AM PST

There is this code repo on GitHub that has a f.lux app (which is no longer available on App Store). I've managed to deploy it on my device via Xcode, but after about a week any app deployed via XCode wouldn't launch, unless I pay $100 annually for iOS Developer License, or create a new signing certificate and re-deploy the app to the device on a weekly basis.

Since I still have the device working fine and plan on keeping it for reading (and especially – for night-time reading), I wanted to find out what else I could do to minimize my exposure to blue light from the screen?

    Changing Apple Smary Keyboard layout

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 05:43 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if you are able to change the special characters from the apple keyboard if I get it from another region (let's say I buy the Italian keyboard, but I'd like the US layout).

Or I am stuck with the original layout?

    Thanks!
