Why hasn't Apple created a way to pair bluetooth via NFC?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:33 AM PST

Every time I want to connect my phone to a friend's car via Bluetooth for the first time, I'm struck by how unbelievably clunky the process usually is. Wouldn't it be great if there were simply a spot on the console with a Bluetooth icon and the text "Tap here to pair"? Tap your phone, a prompt comes up (like the AirPods prompt), accept, and your phone is paired. This type of thing could work with cars, speakers, whatever.

Maybe automakers wouldn't adopt this due to compatibility issues (wouldn't work on Android), but it seems totally crazy that in the 20+ years we've had of Bluetooth, the pairing process for most devices is exactly as crappy as it has always been. I want pairing Bluetooth to be as easy as plugging in a wire. AirPods' pairing process is an innovation, but that's literally the only progress that's ever been made.

Curious if anyone has any thoughts on this, or perhaps there are technical issues with this that I'm overlooking.

Apparently the latest beta 1 of Mac OS Catalina (10.15.4) has references to AMD CPU's.
