What is the best way to remap a key on my keyboard? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:35 PM PST Hi there, I'd like to remap my tilde key to act as a second delete key. I mainly use my music software the most and having a delete key on the left side of my keyboard would help my workflow a bit. Is this possible? [link] [comments]
Does anyone still click *hold down while dragging and release on menus? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:22 PM PST The old old old mac user sub-conscious in me still does it occasionally, I find that it's usually in the Finder using the file and edit menus. [link] [comments]

iCloud Drive as a Dropbox replacement? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:10 PM PST I use dropbox right now but looking to simplify and just use iCloud Drive instead. I have a few gigabytes of documents I can move from dropbox to my documents folder for iCloud to sync. And a few other misc folders just in the iCloud Drive root. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences using it? Edit: Thanks for the feedback! To clarify, it'll just be me using with no sharing planned for now. [link] [comments]
Need help with NSURLSESSIONID and CLOUDPHOTOD Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:50 PM PST These two processes use up a huge chunk of my CPU for hours on end and I have to end them manually. They get my MacBook pro super hot and nukes my battery. Catalina 10.15.2. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Revert to High Sierra from Catalina via Time Machine? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:32 PM PST We upgraded to Catalina from High Sierra about two weeks ago. HP Easy Scan has been incompatible with Catalina since its release, so we are wanting to revert to High Sierra. We tried Image Capture but just do not like it as much. We have always used Time Machine for backups, and are wondering if we can simply boot into Recovery Mode and select Restore form a Time Machine Backup, then select a date that precedes the Catalina Installation. Is this the best way to do this? Will we have all of the same files we had before upgrading to Catalina? We will back up any new files we have added since upgrading to Catalina. We mainly do not want to lose any settings / software installations by doing a completely clean install. [link] [comments]
Anybody have a link to a decently comprehensive list of all MacOS processes and what they do? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:47 PM PST Would like to be more confident about what to block/whitelist. Can't find much that isn't piecemeal / uninformative, but maybe my DuckDuckGo-Fu is just weak... [link] [comments]
My desktop has 100GB of files but in reality they are all in the cloud and not on the device... Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:47 PM PST So for a few hours I've been trying to clean up my computer and save space and I saw that I have 170gb of documents. Which seems quite high. After a while I learn that I have 100gb of data on the desktop alone, but all the items on my desktop are in the cloud and have the little cloud arrow button which means you have to download it first to actually use it. As for my documents folder, I have used about 50gb but I only have 25gb of stuff on my actual hard drive, most of the big files are in the cloud. Its almost like my cloud documents are taking up space on the hard drive, but appear as if they need to be downloaded (and when I click on them, they start to download and my hard drive gets smaller). So annoying. [link] [comments]

MBP sends DNS queries for my appletv - the later has been sold years ago Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:51 PM PST I installed Pi Hole today. While digging thru the statistics I found queries for my appletv's name. I never looked into my DNS logs before. I did own an apple TV 2nd gen years ago. Why and particularly where does macOS remember this device? [link] [comments]
"Other Volumes in Container" hidden system APFS volumes Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:22 PM PST I just performed a clean install of Catalina on my MBP. My Other Volumes in Container is over 200 GB. https://imgur.com/a/1GJz7Eh I have only 5 GB remaining after taking this 200 GB into account. https://imgur.com/a/ESGmZg3. I cannot download anything larger that 5 GB because I do not have enough space, my computer says. When I run diskutil list in Terminal, the 216 GB size of Other Volumes in Container is exactly the same as a synthesized APFS volume that shows in Terminal for Macintosh HD (what I have renamed as "Rose," the name of my Mac and of my internal SSD). https://imgur.com/a/tJFuSo7 I have a partition on an external SSD formatted in APFS with a storage size of 295 GB. Within that APFS container, I created a volume named "Archive" and told the container to reserve 64 GB for that volume. When I look at that volume in About This Mac > Storage, it says Archive has available storage of 231 GB, with 64 GB of it filled by Other Volumes in Container. https://imgur.com/a/m33NFs0 - It seems that Other Volumes in Container takes the place of a reserve made for an APFS volume in some cases. There is clearly an issue going on. Will it resolve itself, and what is going on anyway [link] [comments]
quick way to just mark emails as read when they come in from a particular sender? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:02 PM PST I use Mail in Mac OS X Catalina and I would like to just go through my inbox and mark emails so that the next time that same sender sends an email to me, it is just marked as "read." I still want to receive the emails, I just do not want to be notified that they are waiting for me. Anay way to do this? Any mail extension or something that can setup rules easily? Install new Speech voice via command line? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:22 AM PST I know that the normal way to add new voices is to go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech > and then select customize under the System Voice dropdown menu. However, I am curious if there is a way to accomplish this via the terminal. The reason is that I am messing around with a joke script with my coworkers that will make the computer read stuff in funny voices open to funny websites and other hijinks, and want to see if I can make it so that if a computer doesn't have a voice (like Zarvox for example) already installed, it will install it before the rest of the script runs. I wasn't able to find much insight with a google search, so I'm curious as to whether that's because it's not possible or if it's such a niche thing that it doesn't come up very often. Quicklook Extensions For Catalina Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:44 AM PST Hey! I'm a kinda new user of MacOS and i just recently got it up to Catalina. The thing is, before the update, in Mojave, I had an extension for Quicklook that would show me the thumbnails of .webm files but it appears that this doesnt seem to be the case for Catalina. If anyone could help resolve this problem that'd be greatly appreciated. To be more specific, I'm looking for an extension that displays proper thumbnails and hopefully autoplays .webm extension files. [link] [comments]

How to downgrade from MacOS Catalina? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:51 AM PST I was going to sleep the other night and decided to just update my macbook pro. I thought it was a small update, since my Macbook pro is always giving me little notifications for small updates that only take like, a minute to install. This time though I went into the settings on my mac and saw it had a notification telling me there was an update available, so expecting that it would be one of the small ones, I decided to just do it. I thought it was odd that this one said the install time was 30 minutes, but I just thought that maybe it's that long because I hadn't updated in a while and it put all the small updates into one? Anyways, I logged on the morning and tried to play one of my games on steam, to my surprise it said I couldn't play it at all because the game is 32-bit. The game isn't very popular and it's been a while since macos catalina came out so I doubt they're updating it to 64 bit. As I'm reading reddit posts about macos catalina I really wish I did research on it, but like I said, I thought it was just another one of those small updates (I've only had my macbookpro for like a month btw). Does anyone know how to safely go back to the version I was on before? Wanted to ask here just incase I mess up and end up ruining my macbook forever by doing something dumb. Thanks in advance.
