4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 45) - back from vacation! :)

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 12:00 AM PST

2020 is upon us, and I'll continue the tradition from 2019 with these weekly summaries of the best games I've played last week. Hope you'll enjoy 'em - here's to a kickass 2020 for mobile gaming! ;)

This week, I covered a RPG-meets-Tetris merge game with a gameplay so hectic that I was sitting at the edge of my seat, a fun retro roguelike indie RPG, a real-time strategy game that plays like Crash Arena Turbo Stars and Art of War: Legion, and lastly, new casual Playgendary racing game with a ton of over-the-top abilities that we use to obliterate our opponents.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 45 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Overloot [Game Size: 735 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Merge - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Overloot is a new RPG-meets-Tetris-meets-Merge game where we manage the inventory of an epic hero slaying loot-dropping creatures.

Loot can either be equipped on our hero to make him stronger until the item breaks from all the battling, or be merged with another identical item to create a stronger version of the item. If our inventory fills up, a thief spawns to snack a few random items from us, which is where the Tetris-element comes in.

At the end of each level, leftover loot is sold for gold, which is then used to permanently increase the strength of our hero back in town.

The gameplay is fun, hectic, and I'm loving it. It'll have you sitting at the edge of your seat.

The game monetizes through incentivized ads and pay-to-progress-faster iAPs that are not necessary as the game is singleplayer and allows us to replay older levels if we ever feel stuck.

OneBit Adventure [Game Size: 69 MB] (free)

Genre: Roguelike / RPG / Adventure / Indie - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

OneBit Adventure is a retro top-down roguelike dungeon crawler with simple swipe-controls, 5 characters with unique stats, lots of loot, crafting, and more.

Whenever we level up, we can upgrade the core stats of our character, and when we die, we can create a new character or wait for our character to revive again after a few hours.

There are no ads and the iAPs only allow us to spend premium currency on reviving our characters instantly instead of having to wait. My only minor frustration with OneBit is the repetitiveness of the gameplay, but the developer is actively working on the game, and I still find it a joy to play as-is. App Store: Here

Battle Legion [Total Game Size: 276 MB] (free)

Genre: Strategy / Simulation / C.A.T.S.-like - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review: [Early access]

Battle Legion is a real-time strategy game that plays a bit like the popular Crash Arena Turbo Stars (C.A.T.S.), which means we strategically setup a team of units and send them to war against another player's team, with the fight itself unfolding automatically.

The fun comes from strategically positioning your units and combining them in various ways prior to each fight. Fortunately, there are lots of unique units, which means hundreds of potential strategies to explore.

The game monetizes through a cash shop that sells cosmetics and items that allow us to grow stronger faster. This does make the game slightly pay-to-win, but I didn't mind it much during actual play as I wasn't prevented from progressing as a free player, and there's no energy system.

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Racemasters [Total Game Size: 327 MB] (free)

Genre: Racing / Casual - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Racemasters is a new simple racing game by Playgendary where we equip a vehicle and fill it up with weapons and power-ups, which we use during what's "supposedly" 4-player multiplayer matches (hint: it's not actual online, you're racing against bots!).

During a race we don't control the car itself, but we have to trigger power-ups at just the right time to destroy enemies or block incoming attacks. These power-ups cost mana to use, which slowly recharges automatically. It's the amount of different power-ups that makes Racemasters interesting, as there are near-endless possible combinations, which means lots of different strategies.

The singleplayer campaign mode unfortunately uses an energy system, but at least the "online" mode lets us play as much as we want. My main frustration is the crazy amount of advertisements, which can fortunately be removed through a $4 iAP.

There are other iAPs to progress faster, so yes, the game isn't fair. But it's still fun as a very casual experience in-between larger, more serious, games.

[List] Games that don’t require a lot of attention and with a lot of content

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 03:52 PM PST

Here is the list of all games mentioned, so everyone can enjoy. Most are portrait mode, but not all of them : * Meteorfall * Night of the full moon * Onirim * Card Crawl * Miracle Merchant * Card Thief * Solitairica * Game Dev Tycoon * Game Dev Story and all Kairosoft games * Punch Club * FTL (only on iPad) * Talisman * Fate Grand Order * Aurora Legend * Fire Emblem Heroes * Duel Links * Sorcery! series * F1 Manager * Plague, Inc. * Knights of Pen & Paper 1 and 2 * Baldur's Gate * Old School Runescape * Swag and Sorcery * Civilization games

    ————————————————

    Hi !

I got a new iPhone XS and am willing to test some games on it, games that I can play for a long time.

I prefer to play in portrait mode, but if you believe a landscape game might really interest me, then why not.

I am not looking for an action game that requires to be fully concentrated on it, like for example Call of Duty, Dead Cells, Hyper Light Drifter, so I'm generally thinking of strategy, tycoon or management games.

Here are some examples of games I already played or thought of. Also, I hope this list might give some * Meteorfall, Night of the full moon, Onirim, Card Crawl, Miracle Merchant and Card Thief are games I really enjoyed to play, but some seriously miss content and are quite rapidly repetitive. * Game Dev Tycoon is my most addictive game, along with Game Dev Story * Kairosoft games in general fit well, but I know them all * Punch Club was really cool as well, and took me quite a while to complete. This really is the king of game I'm looking for * FTL as well, but unfortunately it's only on iPad * Talisman was really cool as well *I enjoyed some Gatcha games such as FateGO, Aurora Legend, Fire Emblem Heroes, my favorite being Duel Links which kept me occupied for a while * I really enjoyed the Sorcery! series * Manager games such as F1 Manager or soccer-related games might be cool but I do not really care about cars or soccer... * Plague Inc was great as well * Knights of Pen & Paper 1 and 2 were cool too * We could mention Baldur's gate as well

Do you have any idea of games that can complete the list ? I'll try to keep the list updated so everyone can enjoy !

People like Ben Liu CEO of Hype Bits LLC, Perfliq Games LLC, Strange Sevens LLC and Pocket Gems Inc is giving mobile gaming a bad name

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 06:48 PM PST

Ben Liu is the CEO of nearly a half dozen mobile studios and is backed by both Tencent and Sequoia capital. Since he became CEO of Pocket Gems / War Dragons he has been driving it and their other games in to viciously aggressive pay-to-win / high revenue models.

If a multiplayer game fails they kill it, wait a bit and release it under a different name and studio, or just move on to releasing the next thrown together potential money maker.

Best example is Ben managed Perfliq Games and their mobile arena card battler Rebel Skies, when revenue from it dried up they killed it and less than a year later he had Strange Sevens LLC formed and re-released the game under the name Wild Beyond.

Wild beyond with its launch was a unique and awesome experience and attracted some big whales. But now that they've maxed out and revenue has dropped they are now making the same aggressive economy changes that we saw in Rebel skies before its death and closure.

One group or person being able to run unlimited LLCs also allows for these companies to slap together a dozen poor quality games a year while pretty much guaranteeing a profit sucking people in before killing the game.

I feel these types of tactics are putting a major hindrance on the potential of mobile gaming.

What's some big name games with quality on the iPhone? Also, controller supported games?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 10:01 PM PST

I have arcade, and an Xbox one controller. Been playing the KOTOR port and having a blast, but I'm 66% with story and want to be prepared for when I'm done with pure evil/good runs. Also have dead cells, Bloons 6, Cytus 2(which is massively underappreciated) plague Inc, Minecraft, mini motorways, and sneaky Sasquatch. Anything like that which have alot of replay value without that cheap trick feeling.

    Games like evil apples?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 04:05 PM PST

Been playing evil apples with a group of friends that are remote for almost 3 years now. As such, it has gotten a bit stale. Looking for something new that is similar. Something that is asynchronous, doesn't have a time limit on gameplay, game lobby (so you can setup a new game within the app, not resort to sms) and fun/simple to play. We attempted exploding kittens but it was a disaster because it was none of the above things. Thanks in advance.

Looking for a good high replay value game to keep me interested for a while.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 11:46 AM PST

    Hey all,

I'm currently looking for a new game to play that has a ton of replay value and won't get boring fast. I don't mind paying for a premium game with no adds, even up to $15 if it's worth it. Here are some of the potential games I've been eyeing after researching and going off recommendations. If you strongly suggest a game that isn't on this list please sell me on it!

Death Road to Canada - this game looks like a lot of fun, worried about the touch controls as some others have stated.

Kingdom New Lands - Watched a quick gameplay video, looks good just not sure if it gets boring fast or no replay value.

Dungeon Maker - I've been coming back to this one for a while, never pulled the trigger though. It looks pretty confusing and there's IAPs which worry me.

Game Dev Tycoon - Another popular game I see suggested from time to time, worried it gets boring fast though.

Stardew Valley - Never played this for PC but obviously has a ton a love. I understand there's not much replay value but it has enough content to keep you playing for hours. Worried it might not be my cup of tea.

Hyper Light Drifter - Mixed feelings all around

    • As a reference, one of my favorite games ever for IOS is Dungeon Warfare, tower defense games are one of my favorite and with endless mode it kept me going for awhile. The second one was honestly a step backwards for me otherwise I'd probably still be playing that as of now. Binding of Isaac was a $15 game I got a ton of fun out of but controls weren't great and I own it for PC, trying to avoid another mistake like that. I love strategy with a bit of action involved, I don't mind hard games and figuring out what works best etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR : Need a game that's incredibly fun with high replay value, cost doesn't matter.

Recently got a PS4 controller. Been playing COD and was curious what other games should I be playing that I use this controller with?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 11:08 AM PST

    Hello,

I don't have a ps4 but my friend gave me his old controller. I've been playing the Call of Duty game on my iPhone 8+ and been enjoying it so far. Curious to what other games allow me to use this ps4 controller? I really want to get my MMORPG or just RPG fix but I'm open to any other genre of games. I also don't have a gaming computer or systems. Just an iPhone 8+.

    Thank you.
