Sort ALL folders by kind in Finder

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:39 AM PST

    Hi all,

    I just don't get it-
Why it is not possible to apply sort by kind/name/whatever in Finder in column view to ALL folders.
When pressing CMD + J it allows applying the changes only to the current folder you are at. Meaning, when opening a new folder in the column view, it will not be sorted by the parameter you have chosen.

Is it possible at all to apply sort by *some parameter* to all folders on my mac in column view?

    Thanks!

    Microsoft updates - Excel

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:54 PM PST

Does anyone know how to PERMANENTLY stop Microsoft from updating Excel/Word in MacOS ? Everytime it does, my whole Mac will be as slow as hell when I need to open a file through Finder. And eventually, the whole app (Excel) will stop responding.

I made the change from Windows to Mac because of the stupidity of the updates Microsoft does (the Windows update corrupted 2 of my PCs). Now its affecting ALSO the Excel in MacOS.

This happen when I was using High Sierra, and now Catalina.

Or are there any equivalent alternatives to MS apps that are 100% compatible ? I really wish to ditch Microsoft once and for all

Any way to stop being notified of the catalina update?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:43 PM PST

I just rolled back to mojave, and I don't want to see the updates available pop up every single day for catalina, since I have no interest in going back right now. Is there any way to disable this at all?

Macbook Pro / sudo accepts two different passwords

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:17 PM PST

I tried to change my Macbook password and changed my Apple ID/iCloud password in the process (to my new desired password).

I can now use this new password to log in, but I can still use my old password, too. I don't know what is causing the issue and I can't find this problem anywhere else.

Clicking "Change Password..." in the Users & Groups menu doesn't address the issue. When I click it and enter the new desired password (the recently-updated iCloud password), it essentially says that this password is already being used.

    I am running Mojave 10.14.6 on a 13-inch, early-2015 MBP.

Brand New 2019 MBP - Should I update to Catalina?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:16 PM PST

I just opened my first MacBook Pro, a 13" 2.4GHz with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSR. I've seen a lot of posts and articles about Catalina, so I hate to ask a question that I'm sure is asked a lot...

But, should I update to Catalina? It's a brand new computer. All I've done is run setup. Only software I know I'm going to install right now is MS Office and Adobe Creative Cloud.

    Thank you!

Not getting the Shut Down, Restart and Sleep button on the lock screen (Catalina 10.15.1)

Not getting the Shut Down, Restart and Sleep button on the lock screen (Catalina 10.15.1)

I'm having issues with the Shut Down, Restart and Sleep buttons, I've tried to enable that option through System Preferences → Users & Groups → Login Options, and I checked the "Show the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons" but it actually didn't work at all (I unlocked and locked the padlock)

    Can someone help me, please?

    After enabling the option

Extra volumes showing up in disk utility - preventing time machine back up (catalina)

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:53 PM PST

After upgrading to catalina, there are a couple extra volumes on my boot drive that are preventing me from creating a time machine backup. From what i understand, catalina automatically created a new partition for my data separate from my boot partition to help lessen the chances of accidentally deleting the OS. For some reason it has created two volumes of the same name and i'm not sure what's what. Because there are two volumes with the same name, time machine gives me an error when trying to back up ("Two of the disks to back up have the same name. Rename one of the disks named 'MacHD - Data.'").

That would be easy enough, except that i don't really know what's on either one of them. Can i just delete one of them? The one in the photo has a little house, says it's running MacOS 10.15.1, and is ~197 GB; the other one does not have a little house, does not show an OS, and is ~160GB.

Any advice on which to rename, what each might contain (generally), or how to successfully make a time machine back up would be phenomenal. Thanks! (and if you need more info i'm happy to provide it)

Anyone know if it's possible to use two monitors extended (not replicated) when using Microsoft Remote Desktop on a Mac?

I have two screens for my Mac mini and use Microsoft Remote Desktop to connect to my work computer. So far I'm only able to use it one monitor and can't extend to both. Any ideas or help?

can't find app specific password for mac mail to use my gmail that's been set up with 2 factor authentication

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:29 AM PST

The field to enter it just seems missing. When I set up my gmail on Mac Mail it opens a mini browser to sign into my gmail, and only my actual password works. Then there's no option to enter the app spefici password so I can keep using my gmail on Mac Mail without it having sign in problems (as I have 2-factor set up on my gmail)

    anyone? thanks in advance

Downgrade to Mojave - Restore Time Machine Backup Error

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:23 AM PST

Hey all. I'm not super tech-savvy, so I apologize if this isn't the appropriate place to post this. I upgraded to Catalina without looking into its features (I'm a dummy, I know). I HATE that it doesn't have dashboard and decided to downgrade to Mojave. I called Apple support before I did it, they sent me instructions, I followed, and an hour and a half into restoring from time machine I got an error saying "An error occurred while restoring from the backup. Try restoring from a different backup or reinstall macOS yada yada."

After shutting down and booting up normally and not in recovery mode, it's making me choose a startup disk. The only one available says it's OS 10.14 but when I follow the install prompts it says I don't have enough disk space. Then gives error message "You can't change the startup disk...running bless to place boot files failed."

I've called Apple support about this and they suggested I use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and then restore from time machine. However she also said I should take it into a service provider so a technician can look at it before I erase. She said sometimes when you erase and try to restore, there can be an issue with finding the hard drive or something like that.

My question is...should I really take it in to Best Buy or an authorized dealer without first trying it myself? I don't want to pay someone to diagnose if they're going to end up wiping the drive and restoring, which seems relatively straightforward from the instructions. Maybe I can try myself? I also have the issue of childcare which will make going to a service provider difficult anyway.

Sorry for the long post, but any recommendations? Try it myself vs take it in to someone? Thanks for any help!
