Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:11 PM PDT Currently, I have a Late 2013 MBP Retina and I had it since August 2013, just prior to going to a university. I selected a MBP because at that time, I was majoring as a graphic design student. Fast forwarding to present day, I still have the aforementioned MacBook but I am not a graphic design student graduate. I switched major at some point and graduated with a Bachelor. Anyways, my question is, my parents has graciously offered to buy a new MacBook with a budget of $700 and I can pay off the rest. I have been looking into possibly trading my MacBook Pro and taking advantage of the education program which sells their line of MB at a slight cheaper price. I could bullshit by saying I am going into school for my Masters to utilize the program without them raising an eyebrow. I have asked an Apple rep at a local apple store and he has said that even a Student ID is sufficient for them to verify that I am a student. What I have been looking at lately is the MacBook Air, the 2019 one. All I do now is spend a ton of time on YouTube, web browsing and FaceTiming so its more logical to pick the Air over the Pro based on my daily activities. What scares me is the keyboard issue. It sounds like they have fixed it? Is that the case? My current MB is still good except a few scratches and the stain-gate on my screen (it doesn't bother me that much since I don't see while I am using) However, the battery will be needing a replacement as it is well over 1000 cycles. Occasionally FaceTime doesn't work when I launch the app which forced me to restart it to get it going. This happens quite often as I use FaceTime a lot throughout the week. Occasionally, the power button doesn't cooperate and refuse to go to sleep. The only thing is holding me back is the thought of, well it still works... it just needs a new battery and it's good again but these little quirks it has pisses me off but.. it still works one way or another... BUT.... at the same time, would it be more logical to get a new MB and have it good and solid for the next 5-6 years? Am I crazy to even consider keeping it and just replace the battery? Let me hear your thoughts and what you would do if you were in my situation. Also, if you have any recommendations with the issues I have, make sure you type it in all caps. Thank you! Some Steam games log me out of my Mac Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:59 PM PDT I've tried Googling this extensively, but it's very hard to keyword without bringing up dozens of irrelevant problems to mine. This just started within the last month: whenever I play the game Stellaris, through Steam, on my Mac, it plays just fine. But when I go to exit the game, I've been logged out of my Mac account and have to log back in. This then goes through the start-up procedure and re-opens all of my windows/apps/programs. Frustratingly, any unsaved work I had open at the time of starting the game is lost. I can't figure out what's causing this, and it's never happened before. I know Stellaris is a high-intensity game and is probably running the Mac hot, but I've never had this problem before. Ideas? [link] [comments]
Is it safe to just delete a driver/kext file? Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:09 PM PDT In /System/Library/Extensions/, I have a third-party driver I installed a while back that I need to uninstall. Is just deleting it the right way to go about it? [link] [comments]
15" Macbook Pro as only computer? Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:35 AM PDT I'm currently a college engineering student and a long time Android/Windows user. However a bit ago I picked up an iPad for notes and an iPhone and have been really enjoying both of them. Seeing the continuity between the two devices really impressed me and has me considering switching all the way. I currently have a gaming desktop and a laptop with a decent gpu, so I'd probably be selling those and downsizing to just a Macbook with an egpu at home for gaming. I've been looking at the i7/16gb/555x/512gb 2019 Macbook pro for this. I'd also probably get a Thunderbolt 3 SSD to run games off of. The use cases I want to cover are: -Typical on the go student stuff, web browsing etc with some Matlab and light Solidworks use in bootcamp. -eGpu gaming on both a 1440p ultrawide and the laptop display (I travel some for internships and don't want to carry a whole monitor with me) Ideally I'd like this setup to be competent for AAA gaming for the next 3-4 years, I don't mind turning settings down but obviously wouldn't want to get a whole new laptop. Anyone doing something similar or see any issues with this plan? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:01 PM PDT There's a sale going on for the July 2019 MBP for $999 and if I trade in my mid 2012 MBP, I can get about $130 trade in value. I was planning to get a new laptop next August when I start grad school but this offer seems to be a great deal. However, I also heard they'll be releasing their new line up soon. Should I wait or should I buy it now? [link] [comments]
Best macbook pro 13 for physics major? Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:20 PM PDT Am currently running a 2012 macbook air(Catalina), but I have been experiencing a lot of crashes with it recently, sometimes it doesnt even book (I have an iPad pro11 as well) But I realised I sometimes still need a macbook for running stuff like matlab/R etc, basically STEM programing stuffs (Physics major) Should I get the absolute entry level macbook pro? Or should I maybe get 16GB/i7 instead? How fast of a core/ram do we really need? (I mean, I can just slap on an external GPU anyways, right?) (Have been delaying upgrading due to butterfly key issues, and it seem like the rumored 16 inch might be a toss up regarding that as well?) Or should I just wait it out(Maybe with the ryzen xiaomi laptop or something cheap) and see whats released next? Based in Singapore so I dont think I can take advantage of the costco sale right now Thanks! [link] [comments]
2019 1.4 GHz MacBook Pro vs 2015 3.1 GHz i7 MacBook Pro 16GB RAM Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:47 PM PDT Which would be better for university, and the better investment: the newest 13 inch MacBook Pro with 256GB ssd (Apple certified refurbished), or the 2015 model with an i7 and 16GB RAM (Amazon certified refurbished). Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:10 AM PDT I've a MacBook Air i7 mid 2011. I can't update to Mojave. Is there any way to update to Mojave's or Catalina safely ? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:10 AM PDT I have a MBP 13" with Touch Bar from 2018 and the haptic feedback has suddenly stopped working. Force Touch works fine but I just don't get any haptic feedback when I press the trackpad. I've tried restarting the mac and also tried restarting the SMC but it hasn't worked so far. Also if I turn it off and leave it for a few minutes, when I restart it the haptic feedback is back but after some time (about 30 minutes) it stops working again. Any suggestions? Thanks [link] [comments]
