Ad-blockers: Switched from Adguard to Wipr, best decision ever Posted: 26 Sep 2019 08:01 AM PDT For the longest time I used Adguard on my MacBook and it was good for the most part but one thing that I've noticed about it since day one was the lag that it introduced to Safari. Clicking on Safari would cause like a 3 second delay before it would open, then I would see the beachball, and then I would be able to use the browser. But still I would notice lag, jitter, and slowdown just from general browsing. To confirm that Adguard was causing all of the lag, I would quit Adguard and browse Safari without it and not to my surprise, the lag was completely gone. So I started looking for alternatives, and Wipr was one ad-blocker that people kept mentioning. Yes it it's not free like Adguard, but it's only $2. Took a gamble and it was the best $2 I've ever spent. It blocks all the ads from the websites I use and I have absolutely no complaints. Best of all the lag in Safari is all gone. Also what's with Adguard being allowed to read sensitive information like credit cards and passwords? This was another reason why I ultimately switched. [link] [comments]
13” MBP (2019)‘s Apple logo shrinks halfway during startup Posted: 27 Sep 2019 01:33 AM PDT Hello r/MacOS, I have seemed to realise that my MBP's Apple logo happens to shrink halfway during the startup process. I'm on 10.14.6 (18G103). Daily usage doesn't seem to be affected but I'm just curious whether the occurrence is due to a bug or something faulty from within the MBP itself. I have reset both the NVRAM and SMC but to no avail. Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
What just happened to the localstorage files of the extensions along with Safari 13? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 01:10 AM PDT To me, it seems like while Safari no longer supports .safariextz extensions (which is fine, we saw that coming), it also erased the localstorage files of them. This means I lost all my custom tampermonkey scripts among other things, such as anything I had in RES and so forth. There's no trace of them in Time Machine backups either. [link] [comments]
Just updated to Safari 13.0.1. RES has completely stopped working. Posted: 26 Sep 2019 01:06 PM PDT What do I do? I love safari, don't wanna use Chrome/Opera/Firefox. I at least want dark mode back with the old version of reddit. Is there some extension out there that would do this? [link] [comments]
Hiding Finder on Ubar when no open windows? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 04:56 PM PDT Hello, macOS nerds. Windows nerd here on a quest to make my work mac feel less aggravating. I've got Ubar installed which is great generally. One thing that's driven me nuts is that Finder is shown in the Ubar whether there's actually an open Finder window or not. So, when I've only got Firefox or something open, the task bar has Finder and Firefox. I can't find anything on Ubar's limited documenation about hiding Finder. Do any of you know of some way I could force it to be hidden or something? I've got Forklift 3 replacing Finder so I really don't need to see it at all times. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated. If this would be better on another sub, please point me in the right direction! Thank you! [link] [comments]

Is it possible to have per device settings for Mouse & Keyboard? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 12:07 PM PDT Today is the first time I've used an external Mouse & Keyboard with my Macbook due to my new setup arrangment, and I obviously setup settings such as, change in the scroll direction and change in Keyboard language. Is it possible to make the MacBook recognise these settings so they're only enabled when those peripherals are plugged in? I hope I've made sense! [link] [comments]
iPad Reminders (new format) not being clouded to Mac... Posted: 26 Sep 2019 06:04 PM PDT Let me understand...iOS which I updated two days ago has a new format for Reminders, and warned me about updating them saying that I needed the "last Mac OS version" to read them. Well, I do have the last Mac OS version, but I wasn't sure if he was referring to the one that still isn't out! I pressed the update button, regretted it but there was no way to cancel. Can you confirm it's "normal" that I can't see the reminders on Mac, but I can on the iPad? And that I'll be able to see them when I'll update the Mac to the new version coming soon? Wait, I just noticed there is a new Mac OS Mojave update. Maybe that will fix it? I got very scared as all the reminders disappeared from the iPad too after the upgrade, then they suddenly reappeared. Also, Apple mocks you by substituting the reminders with reminders saying things like "where are my reminders?", and another I accidentally erased. iCloud fucked me before, making notes, bookmarks or reminders disappear forever. iPhone not syncing in Catalina Posted: 26 Sep 2019 06:03 PM PDT I'm running the Catalina beta and my new iPhone (Pro Max) doesn't show up in finder, my XR did before I traded it in. Also my iPod nano and my iPhone SE show up. Anybody else have same problem? [link] [comments]
macOS Catalina on external SSD Posted: 26 Sep 2019 12:01 PM PDT Hello! I'm iMac 2017 user, when I purchased it I additionally bought external SSD Samsung T5, which is my boot drive, system and applications are stored there. Factory OS on my iMac was High Sierra, file system of my external SSD is Mac OS Extended. I wanted to update to Mojave but then I learned that there are some issues, because Mojave needs APFS file system, and because of that computer with external SSD can work and boot slower. So I avoided update to Mojave, but I'm waiting Catalina so much and want to upgrade. So is APFS mandatory for Catalina? Should I be afraid of converting my external SSD to APFS? And one more thing. I want to clean install Catalina. My plan is to reinstall my High Sierra, fully erasing my SSD and after that update to Catalina from App Store. Maybe there is a better way to clean install? Thank you very much for your help! [link] [comments]
2012 Mac mini; can’t use 60Hz ? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 04:15 PM PDT So I'm trying to figure out what the issue is here. I have a 2012 Mac mini with the intel 4000 iGPU. I'm using a 4K monitor (Acer) and using a mini-display port —> DisplayPort, I can use 4K at 30Hz as expected. However, the Mac mini is capable of doing 1440p at 60Hz, but I can't choose this resolution (nor using Option key + clicking scaled). Even when I choose 1080p, the 60HZ option doesn't exist, it defaults to 30HZ. Some tests: * HDMI produces 1080p at 60HZ * Swapped minidisplay cables (same effect, always 30HZ regardless of resolution) What's interesting is I grabbed a spare 1440p (native) monitor and plugged it into the Mac mini and it supports 1440p / 60HZ automatically. This leads me to believe it's an issue with my 4K monitor.... but, using a MacBook Pro, I can choose 1440p /60 resolution on the same 4K monitor. I have no idea what to make of all this. What would be the best way to move files between two external hard drives via my Macbook Pro? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 03:22 PM PDT I have two external hard drives one with 2 tb and the other with 1 tb which is full. I want to move everything to the larger hdd. (total files would be about 955 gb). They are both with usb 3.0 and I connect them with a usb c hub that you can just plug in to the side of the mbp. (it uses two usb c ports. Would it be best to drag from hdd a to hdd b or from hdd a to macbook and from macbook to hdd b? [link] [comments]
What VPN protocol should I use? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 01:28 PM PDT I want to set up a VPN connection to my home so I can access my internal network on the go. I am not sure what VPN protocol I should use when I want security and privacy. So far I found:
WireGuard is a cool protocol but I think it's a little bit too risky to use it now. L2TP/IPSec is something I don't trust, I read on my websites that the NSA has weakened the security. What do you use/recommend? [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Sep 2019 06:40 AM PDT Looking to get either MSI Nvidia GT 710 or a Asus Radeon RX460 2GB GDDR5 for my cMPRO. Does anyone know if either of these support metal (with or without boot screen) I believe the Nvidia is but can't find a reliable first hand experience. [link] [comments]

PSA: Lost 10 years of iMessages in a single swipe thanks to iCloud Posted: 26 Sep 2019 03:03 AM PDT Clearer Title: iMessages are not able to be restored if you use iCloud sync for iMessage and iCloud backup Story: It's been hot where I live, 95 - 100 F. This means that there is constant sweat and my pockets tend to be mildly damp. To add to the setup, iMessage UX makes deleting messages a first class feature (considering the swipe action). So here's the kicker. If you have iCloud sync enabled your changes happen immediately. Need to delete a message? No problem, swipe and they are all gone across every device. Restore? Nope not a chance once they are gone they are gone. Well that doesn't seem so bad if you backup your phone right? I mean I've done this 2 other times over 10 years and every time I would restore via backups. This is no longer possible if you have the iCloud feature enabled. As soon as restore is finished it will attempt to download from iCloud. Okay, well you can at least extract the data from the backup right? Well probably if you backup with iTunes. However if you backup with iCloud alone you are SOL. There is no way to download the archives and extract iMessages (if the backup even stores them). I contacted Apple support and spoke with them extensively. They couldn't help so I want to let others know to save them the heart ache. tl;dr Lost 10 years of messages due to user error, iMessage UX, iCloud sync for iMessage, and iCloud backup EDIT: yes this is a user error and a series of unfortunate events. My focus is that you will want to disable iCloud sync if you are concerned for the integrity of your message backups. EDIT: removed some passive aggressiveness and added a better title [link] [comments] |
