    Sleep wake failure in EFI

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 02:47 AM PDT

I've been getting this error a fair amount when my MacBook Air 2018 wakes from sleep, or doesn't as the case here is. I've had the logic board replaced already as I was getting bridgeOS kernel panics. I think it is just software but any suggestions are welcome. I've reset smc and nv. I'd also note I don't have anything weird installed. MS office, some Utils like itsycal but the error seems to happen regardless of a fresh install or not.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? 176GB free on my drive and FCP is telling me I don't have enough disk space. This has ONLY been since the update to Catalina. Also interesting Catalina appears to have split my drive into two for some reason. Any ideas?

MacOS weirdness without Internet - Delayed startup

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 01:41 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have this weird issue since Mojave, when I'm not connected to the Internet, certain amounts of Apps are responding very slow.

    I'm using:

    - PyCharm CE: Without Internet connection it takes 10 minutes to start the app and sometimes it will fail

    - VMware Fusion: Same thing, the VM doesn't start without internet connection. Also when I use my Hyper Drive for an ethernet cable it will show a lot of weird stuff. No internet means no boot or very slow boot of the VM, if I boot it with internet and then plugin the cable it will not work, it's not recognised in MacOS.

And also Chrome it doesn't work properly. It looks like the apps are trying to reach the internet for some reason but of course fail to do so.

    Anyone else in this boat?

Recommendations for reliable and secure file shredder program

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:46 PM PDT

I'm new to Mac OS (Catalina) and have been in an unfruitful search for a MacOS equivalent to Moo0 File Shredder on my old Windows laptop.

Looking for something reliable, secure, well-maintained--free or relatively inexpensive would be nice but willing to make an exception for a great piece of software.

    Any recommendations?

Screentime - how do I prevent app usage of a particular app between certain hours

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 01:34 AM PDT

I currently have setup an app limit for some websites, to limit me getting sucked into them for too long. This works ok as eg X mins per day. However I would also like to prevent access during certain hours of the day (eg the working day) and do this for some websites and a few apps. Is this possible?

macOS Catalina: TrustedPeersHelper always running at ~40% CPU usage

    Hi everyone,

hope this is the right place to ask, but since I can't find anything about it on the rest of the internet, I thought you might have an idea on what's going on. The TrustedPeersHelper process on my MacBook Pro 2019 running Catalina is constantly running at about 30% to 40% CPU usage. No matter what I do, it always just runs. A restart doesn't help as well.

Does anyone of you have the same problem or maybe knows what to do about it? What I find strange is that I can't even find out what that process does by googling it...

    Thanks!

Mac OS Catalina - Powering off randomly

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 08:19 PM PDT

    Hello there fellow MacOS,

Recently I've ran into this problem with the last OS since X. My MacBook would power off randomly due to a bug in the thunderbolt.kext that would trigger this. I found this rare issue was persistent through a few other fellow redditors. In the past OS I was able to disable SIP and deleted the kext files which would temporarily sold the issue. However, now I am unable to delete the files even while SIP is disabled. It says files cannot be deleted and I have exhausted all options. Desperate for help. Please let me know what I can do to save myself from yeeting this MacBook off the 25th floor.

    Thanks,

Annoying warning before putting document in the trash

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 12:53 AM PDT

    Hi,

Since the last update of Mac OS, i don't know if it was there before, but now when i want to send some document / screenshot in the trash i got a little popup window that ask me if i'm sure.

For me it's really annoying because for my job, i'm used to make several screenshots per day and i delete them after. But now every time i want to send them to the trash i got this message.

I like to keep my desktop clean without anything. Does someone knows how to desactivate this ?

    Thanks :)

Text substitution problems in Catalina Mail

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 08:23 PM PDT

Is anyone else having problems with macOS 10.15 Catalina's Mail and text substitution? For instance, whenever I type a quotation mark (like ") and then press the space bar, it gets autocorrected to a curly quotation mark (like ") but after converting the quotation mark, the space is dropped. This also happens any time there is an autocorrect for a common typo like "gigner beer" being switched to "gingerbeer"

I do have TextExpander, but it is not triggering in this instance. TextExpander gives you the option to keep or drop the delimiter (which would be the space bar), but I don't believe macOS has ever dropped the delimiter, nor do I think they let you decide whether or not to do so.

How do I download macOS for a clean install?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:39 PM PDT

I've currently got 10.15 beta installed. I would like to download Catalina so I can do a re-format and clean install, but I cannot find any link to a download. When I go to the App Store to "get" macOS, I get a message that "the requested version of macOS is not available".

Any advice on how to acquire a full version of macOS Catalina would be much appreciated.

external display works on 10.14.2, but not on 10.14.6

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT

I have PackedPixels small 9.7" Retina display.

It works flawlessly on two different 10.14.2 installations, but wont work on my main 10.14.6 installation.

Both on 2018 Mac Mini and 2018 13" MBP

I've tried RGB EDID script, SwitchResX and couple of other things, but i can't make it work.

All the while 10.14.2 without any GFX tools works flawlessly.

    Anyone has any ideas?

edit: display is recognized in system profiler, and works while booting, but the video is garbled. on 10.14.2 its fine https://imgur.com/a/I4V8XT4

    Mojave Battery Drain

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:03 PM PDT

hello all, I posted previously here about losing battery in on Mojave and I am back again because none of the fixes seem to be working. I did a little more digging to see if I could find any other solutions and I found a video which prompted me to enter this command into Terminal:

Trying to re-install OSX Catalina. Installer is not in applications and the Apps store won't let me re-download it

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 11:54 AM PDT

    Rev: 1.01

Goal: To create a OSX Catalina install disk on a USB drive

    Obstacles:

#1. Although Catalina is installed on my mac mini (2012), "Install MACOSX Catalina" is nowhere to be found in my Applications folder

#2. The App Store will not allow me to re-download MACOSX Catalina

    Backstory:

    I have a mac mini(2012) and a macbook air (2017)

The Macbook air developed issues with crashing etc. Started update to Catalina to try and resolve. Catalina update is stuck and keeps failing. Online research leads me to believe that it is a free space issue. I can only boot in safe mode, and can neither connect to wi-fi nor mount USB drives in order to dump files.

I want to retrieve files via disk mode to my mac mini, then re-install osx Catalina fresh. In order to do this, I need to be able to create a USB install disk.

I also wish to replace the drive with an SSD in my Mac Mini and reload it with Catalina. I need a USB install disk for this as well.

    rsync for APFS?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:10 PM PDT

I'm wanting to perform an rsync style backup (where only the diff is pushed to a remote machine) of my working directories. I've read that rsync isn't able to handle all of the advances APFS has made with regard to the various file system properties one would want to retain in a backup. Encryption keys etc.

Is it possible to do this just using Apple tools, and if not, is there an open source tool out there that could help? All I'm really doing is copying an hourly diff to iCloud. As a Developer, I don't really feel I should have to resort to using something like Carbon Copy Cloner for this.

BTW I'm already Time Machining to two seperate devices, so I'm wanting an off-site copy of select directories of my laptop. I'm also not sure if working directly off of the iCloud container is a good idea when using Xcode and doing Zsh/Vim work.
