[AMA] We're the team behind NeuralCam, the Night Mode camera app for your iPhone. We're giving away an iPhone 11 to celebrate our major update - bringing Night Mode to iPhone 11's Ultra Wide camera!

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 03:24 AM PDT

    Hey Reddit,

We built NeuralCam - a camera app that brings Night Mode to iPhones down to iPhone 6 and, after today's major update, supports the iPhone 11's Ultra Wide camera as well, along with:

    - Improvements in the brightening of highlights (no more blowouts)

    - Improvements for maintaining detail in medium-low light conditions, built on top of Deep Fusion (iPhone 11) or SmartHDR (on older devices)

    - Stronger brightening of selfies

You can check out some comparison photos on our freshly-updated website, including an Ultra Wide comparison photo.

We'll be here until the sun sets, answering most, if not all of your questions, so.. ask us anything!

    About NeuralCam

Our inspiration for NeuralCam have been all the various Night Modes available on Android phones. The kind of tech that helps people make brighter and nicer photos in low natural or artificial light settings. We wanted to make the best out of the iPhone's hardware and give it the software spin needed to get a Night Mode photography upgrade even on older devices.

    Giveaway!

To celebrate our latest major update, we're giving away an iPhone 11. The winner will be able to choose the model & color, the 64GB version. We're really grateful to the iOS community and we're really excited about this opportunity to give back to it.

    How do you enter?

We're using Gleam.io as a giveaway tool, since we want to keep the AMA and the giveaway a bit separated. You can enter the giveaway using this link - signing in with your reddit account.

    Rules?

Your Reddit account has to be older than 24 hours, to prevent duplicate accounts signing up. I'll PM/email you if you win, you have 72 hours to respond. After that, it will go to the next person. All countries are accepted as long as it's possible for us to send/buy you the phone.

The giveaway will be up for 24 hours from the moment this thread is posted, and we will be announcing the lucky winner on Saturday, around 5 PM GMT / 10 AM PST.

    Good luck!

    Ready, set, shoot!

If you don't already have it, you can purchase NeuralCam from the App Store, It's a one-time payment that will give you a lifetime's worth of access to future improvements we make to the app.

We'd love to get your feedback! You can send your comments, suggestions and images at [hello@neural.cam](mailto:hello@neural.cam) or simply tag any photos you post publicly with #NeuralCam.

The more you tell us what works and doesn't work for you, and what more you'd like to see from NeuralCam, the more you'll help us build a better technology. Help us focus our efforts to make this a better product for you.

Self review of the iPhone 11 Pro – Apple’s perfected iteration of the iPhone X formula

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 08:29 AM PDT

So I got the iPhone 11 Pro, upgraded from an Xs. I know this might raise eyebrows but I want to wholeheartedly say, I found, it was absolutely worth it.

The Xs was my first X-series phone (skipped the X and the 8) and while I found the OLED display, design and the camera amazing, I still felt like I desired something a bit more from the phone. I wanted battery life that didn't struggle to make it through the day. I wanted to be able to take clear and crisp pictures at night-time.

With the 11 Pro, those wishes came true, while still retaining everything amazing about the X/Xs.

    Key positive thoughts:

-The frosted glass back is a great design choice, looks great and feels amazing in the hands – considering AppleCare+ and then using phone naked. It gives it this unique shimmer that I haven't seen before on an iPhone.

-All the colours this year are great. Gold is back to a more champagne hue, while the Midnight Green very pleasantly reminds me of some vintage car, and Silver is now a shiny pearly white, it's the Space Grey I opted for and I absolutely love it. Theres something about the dark sides and front that pair well with the lighter back that give it this very jewellery-like look. Elegant and timeless. It's also slightly reminiscent of the Black iPhone 7 if you liked that.

-The Camera has really outdid itself this year. Night Mode. As another review said, this will really let us all reimagine what we can now take pictures of with our phones. It's incredible. The Ultra-Wide angle is amazing for taking in some landscape, or for when you're in a tight space but can't back up.

-The Super Retina OLED XDR display takes what was already an amazing display from the X and Xs and makes it even better through additional brightness in sunlight, increased contrast ratio and also more energy efficient. Which leads to –

-Battery life! It's actually so good. Can leave the house at 9am, return home at midnight, with 12% left (moderate usage throughout the entire day, some Facebook, web surfing, Mario Kart, Snapchat and leaving 4G on). Standby battery life is amazing. None of this was possible on the Xs, in the second half of last year I had to take a charger with me everywhere. The 11 Pro even ups the ante by,

-Giving you a fast charger right out of the box. Can charge 30% in 20 minutes, that's crazy good.

-If you're a fan of Apples first party (leather and silicone) cases, the colour options for the 11 Pro are wonderful. Bright and vivid Meyer Lemon Leather, Pine Green Silicone to match the Midnight Green phone, even the dark Forest Green leather from the Xs returns.

What did I not like/could be done better?

-Price. In Australia where I'm from, its actually more expensive than the Xs was last year ($1629 Xs vs $1749 11 Pro). The USA retained the starting price of $999, should be the same here really. Also, the 11 Pro Leather Folio Case I loved is $50AUD more expensive than its Xs counterpart?

-64GB starting storage almost feels like they're trolling and it shows they left it out of the keynote. My first iPhone was the 5s, I made the mistake of getting the 16GB and remember how painful it was. Never again.

-Apple Give-back trade-in. They've really toned down how much you can get back on your phones (Apple Watch here is way worse this year but anyways), $660aud for a year old phone, when the 2 year old iPhone X they were giving $550, that's much better value. I say if you can, its probably better to try and sell it yourself, you can make more money.

    Final thoughts:

As all the rumours say Apple has something big up their sleeve for 2020 with big, big changes, as they get ready for the next phase of iPhone, I love the 11 Pro for being the perfect send-off to the iPhone X formula. It keeps that same base body design (including notch, two sizes, stainless steel design) but just perfects it with all these improvements. Especially with the FOUR HOUR battery increase from the Xs (which in turn only had 30 minutes extra than the X), Night Modes revolutionary leaps forward, it feels like Apple threw everything at this phone. It wholeheartedly deserves all the praise it gets.

the ONE thing that drew me to the 11 over the Pros

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:40 PM PDT

Putting this out for anyone facing the same decision between the 11 and 11 Pro/Max. Would love to see others' input as well.

After about a week with the Max, a week with the Pro, and now a week with the 11 - I'm sticking with the 11 after upgrading from my previous X. There were a lot of different concerns I had prior to the switch, but there's one main reason I chose the 11 over the Pro: the glass.

After using the Pros in everyday use, I found the new matte finish to be considerably more slippery than the bare, glossy glass of the previous X/XS/Xr and now 11.

As for some of the other concerns I had prior, here's what I've found after owning the X for a couple of years:

    • OLED vs LCD
      • Was worried that coming from the OLED of the X, that going back to an LCD would be a significant downgrade. Honestly, I've barely noticed it. I use dark mode in any and every area possible and the non-true black is the biggest difference. Even still, this has really only been apparent to me when comparing the two side by side. In regular usage, I am quite pleased with the LCD thus far.
    • Screen size
      • I like to go no case, and the Max was juuust big enough (as a guy) to fumble it one-handed when reaching to the far left of the screen. While I do enjoy the compact size of the Pro, the 11 really seems to stick perfectly in the middle. One handed use has been great and it's a tad bigger for media/
    • Materials
      • The back finish aside, the aluminum sides on the 11 are more slippery than the stainless steel of the Pros in my use, however I have felt the back makes the bigger overall difference in grip.
    • Camera
      • This will really depend on your use cases, but I found myself using the ultra wide much more than the telephoto. Still great camera, still night mode, still portrait mode.
    • Battery
      • This one really depends on the situation, but 95% of the time I am able to charge at night and have a wireless charger in the car and at work. I feel that batteries are getting to the point where you will rarely need that extra bump of the Pros - though I can see that being key for some people.

For anyone else going from the Xr to the Pro, or those who also chose the 11, what do you think so far? For those with the Pro, what are your thoughts on the new matte finish?

Here's How iPhone 11 Pro Max Deep Fusion Works In iOS 13.2

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 02:25 PM PDT

Is it unreasonable for Apple to add some type of always on display to OLED iPhones in future software?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Would it be reasonable if Apple could add an always on display for their oled phones? Or at least type of always on display where we could see like battery life without turning on display or notifications without turning on display?

I feel like they could but they won't because of oled burn ins. Thoughts?

Thread, a new app for group chats and sharing stories

Hi r/iphone! I want to first thank the moderators on this sub for allowing me to post on behalf of Thread. My name is Daniel and I am currently working as a digital marketing intern at the startup company Thread . Our mission at Thread is simple: We want to create a better experience for users who have suffered from social media burnout. On our app, there are no public comment threads, no follower counts, and no algorithms deciding what you see. We pride ourselves on making the best possible experience for users. Read what you want, when you want.

As we recently released the public beta on iOS, we are currently looking for early adopters to lend us their time and feedback. Most importantly, we want to hear from you. Your feedback is crucial to helping Thread grow into an app users are excited and passionate about using. On behalf of the team at Thread, I am looking forward to chatting with you and hearing your feedback. So please, don't be a stranger.. let's chat!
