4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 36)

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 06:33 AM PDT

Welcome to the 1-2-3rd episode of my weekly tl;dr recommendations / breakdown of the most interesting mobile games I played this week.

This week, covering a level-based puzzle platformer where we have to sacrifice our teammates to exit each dungeon, a top-down dungeon-crawler RPG with lots of interesting heroes, a brand new indie 2D MMORPG, and a tactical team-based RPG by Paladins and Smite developer Hi-Rez Studios.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 36 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here be the games:

Total Party Kill [Game Size: 162 MB] (free)

Genre: Platformer / Puzzle / Fantasy / Indie - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Total Party Kill is a fun level-based platform puzzle game set in a fantasy dungeon setting where we take control of 3 unique heroes at once; a wizard, an archer, and a warrior.

To complete each level, we use each hero's unique ability to sacrifice one or more of our heroes by pinning them to the wall, turning them into ice, or smacking them halfway across the room in an attempt to exit the dungeon.

The game monetizes through occasional ads that can be removed through a single $4 iAP, making for a perfectly simple and fun indie mobile gameplay experience without all the fuzz of in-game currencies and pay-to-win.

Redbros [Game Size: 112 MB] (free)

    Genre: Adventure / Puzzle / RPG / Dungeon-crawler - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Redbros is a top-down dungeon-crawling adventure RPG with a puzzle gameplay element where our goal is to get a group of heroes safely through a dungeon by directing them where to go, surviving traps, killing enemies, and solving puzzles.

The controls are well-designed, and in-between levels, we can upgrade each of our heroes or unlock new ones to change our team composition.

The game's fun and the gameplay is very unique, but the energy system that limits our play-time with the game costs an astonishing $8 to remove, making this game rather pricey, and more heroes can also be unlocked through iAPs, which makes the game heavily pay-to-progress faster.

Pixel Knights Online [Total Game Size: 187 MB] (free)

    Genre: MMORPG / Indie / 8-bit / RPG - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Pixel Knights Online is a top-down 2D indie MMORPG where we play as a knight, bow master, wizard, or assassin as we explore the open-world filled with monsters, quests, and other players.

The combat system relies on lots of repeated normal attacks, with abilities to spice things up a bit, and the game features a decent amount of both singleplayer and multiplayer gameplay content, like guilds, castle sieges, arenas, and more.

My 3 main gripes with this game are 1) the horrible joystick control, 2) the extremely slow walking speed, and 3) the monetization, which definitely allows us to progress faster and pay to win.

Smite Blitz [Total Game Size: 703 MB] (free)

    Genre: Tactical / RPG / Team-based / Gacha - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review: [Soft-launch beta]

Smite Blitz is a tactical team-based RPG with a gacha unlocking system, an energy system limiting our play-time, and lots of Pay-to-Win.

Yes, consider yourself warned! Some might have been considering checking this out once it globally releases, but in my opinion, it's simply not worth it.

The mythological theme of the game is awesome, but combat is bland, boring, and nearly 100% automated, the graphics aren't spectacular, and it most of all feels like a rushed cash-grab by Hi-Rez Studios. I'm disappointed.

Recommend a good top down pixel art game with some depth to it?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 08:09 AM PDT

I'm really in the mood for a good top down pixel art game similar to SNES Zelda, Stardew Valley, Pokemon, etc. I don't particularly care what the game is about, so long as it has some exploration and depth to it. Controller support is a must. Thanks!

Folklore-themed games for iPhone: your favorites

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 05:45 AM PDT

Any folklore-themed iPhone games you'd recommend? Maybe something from YOUR country? :)

Here's why: traveling on business now, only iPhone to play on.

Working with Cursed Castilla for iOS/Switch (also known as Maldita Castilla EX), I got interested in checking out other folklore-themed games available, while on this trip. Pretty sure there's more games that I don't know of. _^ Thanks in advance!

    Bradwell Conspiracy review

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 05:37 AM PDT

SPOILERS BELOW! I was really looking forward to this one, and I have to say, having finished I feel satisfied with this game. I liked the graphics and atmosphere for most of the game, and the voice acting and script were really great.

I think a lot of people were expecting something like a new 'Portal' and I think the devs also were promoting the game like that a bit too much. As a puzzle game it was pretty simple and also pretty contrived in places, the 3d printing mechanic felt very basic and in general the game was incredibly linear and forgiving in terms of pure gameplay.

But I think this game is much closer in spirit to someting like Firewatch. The story was the game, yes yes it is a walking simulator, but a fun one and an interesting one. Perhaps it never really lives up to the promise of the first hour or so, but I think it was a pleasant and interesting game.

Also I liked the little cameo by Charlie Booker.

Need help finding a puzzle game I used to play

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 11:45 AM PDT

Howdy all. I'm trying to remember the name of a puzzle game I used to play.

It contained 100s of puzzles in groups of "packs". You could unlock packs by solving puzzles, or by paying for unlocks.

Each puzzle involved moving wooden pieces around a board in order to cover up certain spaces. Sometime the puzzle was about getting them to fit in certain configurations. Sometimes it involved holding sliding pieces out of the way with one finger (or a few fingers) so that a piece could be slid across the board.

It was not so much a tangrams type of game, because the pieces were all already on the board.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

    Thanks for the help.
