Non-Functional Macbook Pro 2018 Screen. Using voice control to use monitors

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:38 PM PDT

So my dog flipped his bone as my macbook was on the ground and the screen was open and cracked the internal screen.

This was 2 weeks ago and I use my macbook pro as a dock and have 2 monitors plugged into it. It's been working fine until Tuesday. Now no signal is coming to through to the monitors.

I've tried PRAM reset, different thunderbolt ports, restarting, different hdmi cables, 2 monitors and a TV, still nothing.

I start up my computer and triple click the fingerprint button and it activates the voice control.

When I start it up it says "username". I've tried clicking tab and typing my password and hitting enter, but it just repeats "username" again.

Can anyone help? I do plan on getting my screen fixed, but for now I just want to be able to hook it back up to my monitor set up.

    Thanks in advance everyone :)

Transferring AppleCare+ from stolen MacBook Air 2018 to new MacBook Pro 2019?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:31 PM PDT

I'm a grad student and college instructor who bought a 2018 MacBook Air with AppleCare+ (at full price, Apple price matched the device from Best Buy which was lower than the education discount). A couple weeks ago, my office was broken into while I was out at lunch and my MBA was stolen. (Did all the right things, don't worry—erased it remotely from my iPhone, tried to track as best as I could for the police, no leads).

I've finally gotten the disposable funds to replace my device, and am opting to buy a 2019 13 inch MacBook Pro (256GB), applying the education discount. I'll be getting it from the same store I bought the MBA at, and I'm gonna go in tomorrow after my paycheck hits.

My question is this: I've read on Apple's website that one can transfer AppleCare policies between devices under certain circumstances. Do you think this is possible to do in my current case, so I don't have to shill out another $200 to cover my new laptop (I can afford to do it, but obviously don't want to be wasteful)? I have the receipt from the old one with the AppleCare+, of course.

A first followup: if it is possible/if it is worth asking about at any rate, would that transfer be from the date I originally bought the policy (so, ending in May 2022) or from now (so, ending in October 2022).

And a second followup: I'm torn on whether losing the 4 months of coverage is worth the saved money, since I could part with it, reasonably. Might just be silly of me to be that paranoid, but I've had my fair share of freak stuff happen, and AppleCare—at least at my go-to store—has always treated me right and been a lifesaver. So I can just envision something happening 2 years and 9 months from now that won't be covered, and which I'd need to sink more than the $215 or so (after education discount) I'd sink now on AppleCare+.

As always, your counsel is so appreciated!

Replaced "A" keycap has a lower travel distance.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:47 PM PDT

The "A" keycap for my 2019 MacBook Pro that is around 30 days old broke and I had to get it replaced today. It was an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and the replaced "A" keycap seems to have a much stiffer / lower travel distance than all other keycaps, including the previous "A" keycap I was using.

Could it be that the Service Provider used an older version keycap for my model? Are the keycaps all the same so does it not matter? I know it's not a big problem, but it just doesn't get off my mind every time I type.

How to adjust brightness and contrast on external display without changing the settings of the monitor?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:59 PM PDT

    Hi all,

When I connect my MacBook pro to my monitor, the colors are very washed out and was wondering if there's anyway to adjust it with a software.

I know in windows you can do it with either the Nvidia or Intel graphics control panel. Is there something similar with mac os?

I don't really want to change it using the monitor as I use it for other stuffs (Windows machine and PS4) and it looks fine with those.

    Thanks

Will charging bluetooth headphones through my MacBook Air damage its battery?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:34 AM PDT

Probably a stupid question, but here we go:

I'm in the market for new bluetooth headphones, but I just realised I would have no way to charge them other than through my laptop.

    I'm on MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013).

    Thanks for any advice.

Which is better - base 2018 Macbook Air or base 2017 Macbook Pro 13” Non-Touch Bar?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:15 AM PDT

I'm asking from user experience perspective.

I have the base 2017 MBP (Non-Touch Bar) and know it has better specs, slightly better display and audio.

But I recently got my hands on 2018 Macbook Air and I really don't see much of a difference in the display and audio. And that TouchID is a life changer. I can see performance-wise the MBP is better.

I'm wondering as far as user experience go, not only considering specs, which is better?

    Macbook Air or Pro Heat

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 10:03 AM PDT

Is the 2019 Macbook Air better for use on your lap versus the 2019 Mabook Pro? Specifically in regards to heat transfer?

I use a laptop on my lap more than I do at a desk and I hear that the MB Pro's can get hot to the touch. I want to avoid excessive heat on my lap or the need for a cooling pad in the future. I don't necessarily need the extra horsepower of a Pro, but for a few hundred bucks I would be glad to upgrade as long as the heat transfer isn't an issue.

    iCloud Drive Upload Error

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 09:05 AM PDT

    iCloud Drive Upload Error

I have been dealing with this for a few months now. I recently ran into an issue on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro and had to factory reset it. After doing so, I connected to my iCloud account and expected all of my technology to communicate smoothly again. Unfortunately that has not been the case and my iCloud has been completely out of wack. In short heres my issues:

    • My pre-restore files never showed up again
    • My old files show up on my phone's iCloud Drive
    • Uploading new files results in an infinite upload time that never progresses (as attached)

Anyone else experience this or have any tips? Ive tried disabling iCloud drive, readding my iCloud account, but I'm at a loss for ideas at this point.

Brand new MBP: Losing battery over night

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:50 AM PDT

Yesterday I got my new MacBook Pro 2019 (base model). I first had the problem that my MacBook turned itself off after closing the lid instead of going to sleep mode. After a reset it finally worked as expected.

My battery was at 100% when I started it for the first time. After setting it up I just opened a few apps and then went to sleep. This morning when I opened the Macbook again the battery was at 8%. How is this possible?

I searched the web already and did a NVRAM reset. After rebooting the device the battery jumped up to 13%. WTF?

I am charging the MBP now for the first time but I am wondering if this is normal behaviour? Did any of you experienced the same issue? Shall I return the device?
